248 35 1 0 Thursday - A City by the Light Divided

What...how...

a serious and fascinating fartist (Simon H.), Friday, 10 March 2017 23:34 (seven years ago) link

I'm still bewildered that the genre turned into pop punk with make up and haircuts.
Not so much pop punk as that's inevitable I suppose things will get poppier as major labels get involved by why the make up/haircuts? where did that come from? It had been over a decade since the heyday of hair metal.
How did it end up like it has?

Odysseus, Friday, 10 March 2017 23:35 (seven years ago) link

xp i guess i was its only voter?

Mordy, Friday, 10 March 2017 23:36 (seven years ago) link

Like it was weird to me when it went all dashboard confessional type stuff from a while then it changed drastically again. But I suppose hardcore dudes with acoustic guitars isnt that much of a stretch but changing again to what it did.

Odysseus, Friday, 10 March 2017 23:38 (seven years ago) link

the move to dashboard and pop-punk and post hardcore etc makes perfect sense to me - the weird ingredient imo is where all the goth stuff comes from. AFI, MCR, Alkaline Trio - what's the source document for gothy emo music?

Mordy, Friday, 10 March 2017 23:40 (seven years ago) link

gotta say i didn't think i'd have to rep american nightmare? my bad.

american nightmare - am/pm

or maybe everyone just hates it. there are few things i can think of that are more "emo" (altho maybe it's just too "hardcore"?)

I was counting the good things about this city / The only good thing is you are not here

why ruin a good tradition? (Will M.), Friday, 10 March 2017 23:42 (seven years ago) link

AFI I assume were Misfits fans. The others Marilyn Manson maybe?
It's the only thing I can think of but I am an outsider to emo. Though I was still buying Kerrang when these bands started coming through.

Odysseus, Friday, 10 March 2017 23:43 (seven years ago) link

think it's just The Cure tbh

devvvine, Friday, 10 March 2017 23:45 (seven years ago) link

definitely for mcr

devvvine, Friday, 10 March 2017 23:45 (seven years ago) link

who was the first of the glammy/goth emo bands to get known outside of the scene?

Odysseus, Friday, 10 March 2017 23:50 (seven years ago) link

mcr is definitely the first one i can think of

afi are barely emo but decemberunderground uses a ton of the genre's tricks

it pleases me that there wasn't that much overlap btwn voters for the Juno albums. time to get that reissue petition started.

a serious and fascinating fartist (Simon H.), Saturday, 11 March 2017 05:20 (seven years ago) link

Props to Mordy and ArchC for the poll, I've run two so I know how much time/effort it takes.

I had a blast over the last few weeks reacquainting myself with so much music I hadn't really visited in a while. Was fun re-forming opinions on this stuff at such a different phase in my life. As well as learning about so much more.

Genuine thanks to everyone involved in the nomming/rollout for keeping it light and fun. Ive got a lot of not-emo(!) gripes with a fair share of the picks but it doesn't matter in the end, great results anyway. My fav part of these types of threads is when people talk about their favorite tracks and album moments and specific details about those, and there was a lot of that itt. Hi5 to Brad, Simon, AC, Mordy, my closest neighbors I think.

why ruin a good tradition? (Will M.), Saturday, 11 March 2017 07:54 (seven years ago) link

Really regretting not voting for Orange Rhyming Dictionary now - listened to it last night for the first time in ages and it sounded great. Also it was the very first emo album I bought (January 2000 after seeing it mentioned in the NME). Happily I discovered I still have the CD lying around.

Best discoveries from the poll?

Odysseus, Saturday, 11 March 2017 13:18 (seven years ago) link

Mostly new stuff to me. Currently enjoying the Weakerthans and Appleseed Cast.

And not to harp on, but There Will Be Fireworks are worth a listen in this vein:

SO I listened to 2 Jimmy Eat World and 2 Brand New albums and i thought they were ok.

Odysseus, Saturday, 11 March 2017 16:36 (seven years ago) link

Biggest discoveries for me were Thursday and Brand New.

ArchCarrier, Saturday, 11 March 2017 16:40 (seven years ago) link

There's some good OOP albums on this bandcamp from screamo/post-hardcore groups so maybe they should put out the Juno and Gospel albums?
