Meanwhile, in multitasking congress:

Tensions between congressional Republicans and the Trump administration are rising over Russia, as lawmakers probing alleged ties between the president’s team and the Kremlin accused officials of trying to block their efforts.

Senate Judiciary Committee Chairman Charles E. Grassley (R-Iowa), whose committee is one of several where investigations are fully underway, accused Justice Department officials Wednesday of lying when they promised to share information about ongoing department probes with lawmakers conducting oversight.

“It doesn’t matter whether you have a Republican or Democrat president, every time they come up here for their nomination hearing . . . I ask them, ‘Are you going to answer phone calls and our letters, and are you going to give us the documents we want?’ And every time we get a real positive ‘yes’! And then they end up being liars!” Grassley said, screaming into the phone during an interview with The Washington Post. “It’s not if they’re treating us differently than another committee. It’s if they’re responding at all.”

Yeah the courts opposing it isn't the concern, it's whether the people implementing it are given orders, explicit or otherwise, to ignore the courts.

Dershowitz otm

Wednesday night’s ruling could also impact the Supreme Court confirmation process for Judge Neil Gorsuch — one of the most smooth-sailing initiatives launched by the administration — because Democrats may now have a greater incentive to stall his appointment.

“He can’t change it again,” Dershowitz said in an interview. “That would be embarrassing. He’s going to seek an expedited appeal from the Ninth Circuit, and the Democrats will try to slow down the Gorsuch nomination so he won’t be there in time to break a four-four tie.”

Chief Justice Roberts seems to have retained a shred of self-respect that he still wishes to preserve. One may hope this would be operative when this case arrives.

I'm surprised there's no pro-ban litigation trying to claw its way to the fifth circuit but I guess you would need to prove damages to do so

So that speech was hot for about two or three hours after the speech was made, because they came up with other things, having to do with other people, that they shouldn't have been able to do and they shouldn't have done, but they did it. And you know exactly what I'm talking about.

Sometimes I think about a scene from HBO's Rome, just after the assassination of Caesar.

Cassius: We have all the Senate behind us, and all the men of quality.
Antony: And I have an angry mob, that will roast and eat your "men of quality" in the ashes of the Senate House.

Now, I don't know if Trump or Trumpians watched that series, but I think they would approve of this exchange and incorporate it into their fantasy of how to transform American governance.

The judges rule against us? Well, let us storm the courthouses and bay for their blood.

1. Boost the military above all else
2. Demonize the independent media, make up your own "facts" (anti-intellectualism)
3. Isolationist worldview, Economic nationalism
4. Demonize "the other" (Foreigners, Illegals, Muslims, Liberals...)
5. Consolidate power (undermine Congress and "so called" Judges)

Likeliness to pass is a pre-Trumpian question, fool. Only idiots take his proposals/orders/support for policies literally; they forget he is the master dealmaker who always begins negotiating at an extreme, trusting that the final position will be someplace else. This is the prism through which he sees the world.

So he puts out a budget eliminating (for example) life support for fluffy puppies who have cancer. All the usual suspects cry out, "Trump hates fluffy cute widdle puppies!" Whereas to him, it was never about the puppies, but about the rush of the art of the deal. After negotiation it turns out that he really only wanted to kill, say, 75% of the puppies. You fools took him literally when it was really just a starting negotiating position.

Ditto, ban all the muslims. Maybe it's only most of them. Let's talk, let's deal.

Ditto, eliminating the EPA, NEA, NEH, PBS, and pretty much any non-Defense government department. It's just a proposal! People will get in a room, see, and there will be a Deal Made. Maybe only half of those agencies are actually eliminated.

Ditto, the health care bill. He doesn't care about the details of the GOP proposal because to him, it's just a starting point for the awesomely winning dealmaking that is gonna happen. Believe me. It'll be beautiful.

Ugh. This mode of thinking is getting normal and it just makes me so ill.

sane in the membrane (Ye Mad Puffin), Thursday, 16 March 2017 15:11 (seven years ago) link

yes yes but we gotta point out that, cuts to State notwithstanding, this is a REPUBLICAN budget. They've dreamed of cutting the arts and EPA for years, at least since Reagan.

the Rain Man of nationalism. (Alfred, Lord Sotosyn), Thursday, 16 March 2017 15:15 (seven years ago) link

that budget won't pass either chamber, and generally speaking president's budgets never do - Congress writes the bills.

Οὖτις, Thursday, 16 March 2017 15:16 (seven years ago) link

it is v much a "starting point" though
