I don't want anyone to get hurt, but maybe it will take Trump/the GOP doing what they've long threatened to do to finally teach their core constituents that they have been voting against their best interests: https://www.nytimes.com/2017/03/17/us/trump-budget-cuts.html

Josh in Chicago, Saturday, 18 March 2017 15:03 (seven years ago) link

Regina Feltner, a retired nurse, was recovering from side effects of radiation therapy when she got the notice that her heat would be cut off. It was a bone-cold January day. The snow was so high that her daughter had to come over to take the dog out.

“I have lung cancer and it’s the dead of winter,” she remembers thinking. “What am I going to do?”

Help came in the form of a heating subsidy: money from the federal government, delivered by the Highland County Community Action Organization, a small nonprofit in rural southern Ohio, where Ms. Feltner lives.

Now, that program is on the chopping block. It is one of many cuts in President Trump’s new budget proposal that would inflict the deepest pain on the most vulnerable Americans — a great number of whom voted for him.

“I understand what he’s trying to do, but I think he’s just not stopping to think that there are people caught in the middle he is really going to hurt,” said Ms. Feltner, 57, who was a nurse for 25 years and voted for Mr. Trump. “He needs to make some concessions for that. I was a productive citizen. Don’t make me feel worthless now.”

As news of Mr. Trump’s budget begins to sink in across the country, Americans are trying to parse what the changes to the government’s spending plan might mean for them. It is only a proposal, an opening bid in what is likely to be a protracted public argument over national priorities. But it is important because it signals what the new president is thinking, his wish list for the size and shape of government.

In two days of interviews with beneficiaries of programs at risk in 11 states, many people said they did not see themselves reflected in Mr. Trump’s vision for the government. And some felt surprise at what has been left out.

Ms. Feltner said that without the heating subsidy she would probably have to move in with her daughter and two teenage grandchildren. “I’d still like to have a little dignity left, and not have to move in with someone else,” she said. “I used to be the one packing up the food in the food pantry for people,” she said. “Now I’m the one in line.”

Another proposed cut would defund the Appalachian Regional Commission, which was founded in 1965 to strengthen economic growth in a 13-state swath of the country. Of the 420 counties in the commission’s footprint, 399 voted for Mr. Trump.

“I hate to see him cut us,” said Chris Farley, 32, of Delbarton, W.Va., who was laid off from his job operating a drill at a surface coal mine in 2015 and is now in a jobs and education program partially funded by the commission.

And so on.

But these 11 small-business owners (including banks) meeting in Toledo, Ohio think the White House is great (mostly due to promised tax cuts and promised deregulation)

“That guy is a junkyard dog, doing his tweets at 3 a.m. and taking on the news media — I just get strength from him,” Mr. Soltis said over a wine-soaked dinner with a large group of his small-business friends and peers from around town. “And I have to say, it makes you feel gutsy — ready to step up and start investing again.”

progressives often cluck about the manipulation of poor conservatives, implying that they're mooncalf rubes too dumb to know when they're voting against their own interests. this seems wrongheaded on a number of levels. for one thing, it presumes that such interests can be measured objectively. they can't. the conservatives in question likely stack their towers of relative value quite differently than most progressives. it's also condescending and plays into a well-established conservative narrative, one which holds that the american left is a coalition built cynically on graft, on stealing from the common pot in order to buy the votes of the destitute & lazy. viewed through that lens, the refusal to be so bought, even when one is genuinely needy, becomes a point of pride.

SFTGFOP (El Tomboto), Sunday, 19 March 2017 03:08 (seven years ago) link

Idk. I think these people are heavily influenced by the likes of Rush Limbaugh and other assorted rogues. No one has pure access to the facts but consuming that much highly ideological, often blatantly dishonest political commentary definitely skews one's ability to evaluate something like Obamacare rationally.

Treeship, Sunday, 19 March 2017 03:08 (seven years ago) link

Like the value system of hating "takers" comes from somewhere -- this propaganda machine. It plays into racism that was already there but it also fuels it further. The challenge for the left is to offer a non-racist narrative to these people that speaks to whatever emotional need rush limbaugh et al are meeting. It's hard but I do think it's important for someone to at least try to break through because the constant scapegoating of minorities and liberals is wreaking havoc on society. It needs to be confronted and defeated, not left to fester

Treeship, Sunday, 19 March 2017 03:18 (seven years ago) link

Conservatives have always beaten liberals at the "influential talking heads" game simply because they have no interest in being valued by experts and academics, have no problem doubling down in the face of mounting criticism, craft memorable, tough-as-nails on-air personas, and stay on message no matter how stupid it is.

Which is not to white-knight liberals by any means and suggest we're all "above" this sort of behavior...but liberal talking heads are too soft for the general public, do weak things like apologizing and admitting fault, and are more likely to evolve their message over time. the types of people who are political radio junkies tend to break more for the Limbaugh style of broadcasting than for the Maddow style, which they view as the "pussification of the airwaves" or w/e

waht, I am true black metal worrior (Neanderthal), Sunday, 19 March 2017 03:18 (seven years ago) link

and whenever we have a liberal talking head that bends on some of those premises (a Michael Moore type), we eat him internally

waht, I am true black metal worrior (Neanderthal), Sunday, 19 March 2017 03:19 (seven years ago) link

I don't think we need to "beat them at their own game" but I think we can at least try to offer them a better kind of populism, one that targets the rich not immigrants. Right now in left wing discourse the "white working class" are treated as exotic specimens and I think they pick up on that and it turns them off.

Treeship, Sunday, 19 March 2017 03:21 (seven years ago) link

I think we need to beat them, with very big sticks. the biggest sticks.

Jesus. What do we think is driving that most of all? TrumpCare pissing off portions of the GOP electorate? Wiretap nonsense revealing for the n-thousandth time that he's a lying pathetic clown? Background sense that something something Russia? Muslim Ban 2.0?

trumpcare is probably the only one of those that might actually be chipping away at support amongst those that were at some point cautiously enthusiastic about him

jason waterfalls (gbx), Sunday, 19 March 2017 18:31 (seven years ago) link

Trumpcare would be my guess, too. There are plenty of poor rural folks who got pulled into Medicaid under the ACA. They now know they're going to be kicked off and have no medical care if Trumpcare passes. There would have been a hell of a lot more of them, too, if so many Republican governors and legislatures hadn't refused Medicaid expansion in their states.
