progressives often cluck about the manipulation of poor conservatives, implying that they're mooncalf rubes too dumb to know when they're voting against their own interests. this seems wrongheaded on a number of levels. for one thing, it presumes that such interests can be measured objectively. they can't. the conservatives in question likely stack their towers of relative value quite differently than most progressives. it's also condescending and plays into a well-established conservative narrative, one which holds that the american left is a coalition built cynically on graft, on stealing from the common pot in order to buy the votes of the destitute & lazy. viewed through that lens, the refusal to be so bought, even when one is genuinely needy, becomes a point of pride.

Idk. I think these people are heavily influenced by the likes of Rush Limbaugh and other assorted rogues. No one has pure access to the facts but consuming that much highly ideological, often blatantly dishonest political commentary definitely skews one's ability to evaluate something like Obamacare rationally.

Like the value system of hating "takers" comes from somewhere -- this propaganda machine. It plays into racism that was already there but it also fuels it further. The challenge for the left is to offer a non-racist narrative to these people that speaks to whatever emotional need rush limbaugh et al are meeting. It's hard but I do think it's important for someone to at least try to break through because the constant scapegoating of minorities and liberals is wreaking havoc on society. It needs to be confronted and defeated, not left to fester

Conservatives have always beaten liberals at the "influential talking heads" game simply because they have no interest in being valued by experts and academics, have no problem doubling down in the face of mounting criticism, craft memorable, tough-as-nails on-air personas, and stay on message no matter how stupid it is.

Which is not to white-knight liberals by any means and suggest we're all "above" this sort of behavior...but liberal talking heads are too soft for the general public, do weak things like apologizing and admitting fault, and are more likely to evolve their message over time. the types of people who are political radio junkies tend to break more for the Limbaugh style of broadcasting than for the Maddow style, which they view as the "pussification of the airwaves" or w/e

and whenever we have a liberal talking head that bends on some of those premises (a Michael Moore type), we eat him internally

I don't think we need to "beat them at their own game" but I think we can at least try to offer them a better kind of populism, one that targets the rich not immigrants. Right now in left wing discourse the "white working class" are treated as exotic specimens and I think they pick up on that and it turns them off.

Trumpcare would be my guess, too. There are plenty of poor rural folks who got pulled into Medicaid under the ACA. They now know they're going to be kicked off and have no medical care if Trumpcare passes. There would have been a hell of a lot more of them, too, if so many Republican governors and legislatures hadn't refused Medicaid expansion in their states.
