“We’ll either pass something that will achieve a goal that we’ve been working on," he said. "Or not.”

how much does McConnell hate his life right now

Reuters:

BREAKING: House Oversight Committee requests documents from White House, FBI on any communications, payments between Flynn and Russia

Lauren Schumer Donor (Phil D.), Wednesday, 22 March 2017 16:47 (seven years ago) link

So Chaffetz is starting to have second thoughts, is he?

Ned Raggett, Wednesday, 22 March 2017 16:48 (seven years ago) link

Best of both worlds would be GOP pursuing Russia, etc. and still losing seats. Because assholes.

Josh in Chicago, Wednesday, 22 March 2017 16:50 (seven years ago) link

gorka you fuck, you wore the goddamn uniform to the inauguration

any GOP investigation into russia is going to be half-assed. chaffetz will do enough to avoid widespread criticism and that's it

marcos, Wednesday, 22 March 2017 16:51 (seven years ago) link

Yeah but after all his grandstanding just a few weeks back it's amusing to see him start to cough and look embarrassed, at least metaphorically.

Ned Raggett, Wednesday, 22 March 2017 16:54 (seven years ago) link

No big deal, just an extra $60 million a year to take care of Trump's scattered family and second homes.

https://www.washingtonpost.com/politics/secret-service-asked-for-60-million-extra-for-trump-era-travel-and-protection-documents-show/2017/03/22/0967e7b6-0a85-11e7-a15f-a58d4a988474_story.html

So, has Trump proposed a ban on fast moving cars yet?

Josh in Chicago, Wednesday, 22 March 2017 16:57 (seven years ago) link

xxp yeah the fact that were at the "requests" stage rather than "subpoenas" stage is telling

Lauren Schumer Donor (Phil D.), Wednesday, 22 March 2017 16:58 (seven years ago) link

*we're

Lauren Schumer Donor (Phil D.), Wednesday, 22 March 2017 16:58 (seven years ago) link

marcos is correct

Οὖτις, Wednesday, 22 March 2017 16:59 (seven years ago) link

however the longer this bumbles along the more of a cloud is over the administration/the less effective they'll be which should hamstring them long enough (hopefully) to lose the House in 2018 and then shit will get real

Οὖτις, Wednesday, 22 March 2017 16:59 (seven years ago) link

Starting to wonder if the persistent cloud of poo enveloping the White House and renders the office toothless is better than outright impeachment.

But then i see what just happened in the UK and would be terrified to have a leader like that in a situation like that

Stuff from Jamie Dupree's feed re Nunes just now:

https://twitter.com/jamiedupree

Nunes tells reporters he believes there was possibly incidental collection of Trump's communications during transition

Nunes on incidental collection of Trump communications: "It looks to me like it was all legally collected"

Nunes says the info was brought to him by a source; he briefed Speaker Ryan this morning. Going to White House

Nunes says Trump communications were caught in "normal incidental collection...normal foreign surveillance"

Nunes says the Trump "incidental collection" was all legally collected under FISA

Nunes won't say who brought it to him, but "there is no question, it is official IC information"

Nunes says he is going to the White House in a few minutes to brief the President on the details

So as Dupree put it along the way:

So then the question would be - who was Trump talking to during the transition that led to incidental collection

Ned Raggett, Wednesday, 22 March 2017 17:22 (seven years ago) link

(Which given that of course Nunes was on the transition team is...)

Ned Raggett, Wednesday, 22 March 2017 17:23 (seven years ago) link

why is he announcing this

Οὖτις, Wednesday, 22 March 2017 17:27 (seven years ago) link

nothing illegal about transition team talking to foreign governments, remember when Trump took that call from Taiwan lol

Οὖτις, Wednesday, 22 March 2017 17:27 (seven years ago) link

So someone ... leaked this?

Josh in Chicago, Wednesday, 22 March 2017 17:41 (seven years ago) link

Shh, you're giving it away!

Ned Raggett, Wednesday, 22 March 2017 17:43 (seven years ago) link

I don't think someone in IC giving the House Oversight Committee chairman info counts as a "leak". That's a p broad definition of "leak" (ie anything that isn't entered into public record during sworn testimony or whatever)

maybe Nunes deciding to talk about it to the press is tho, lol

Οὖτις, Wednesday, 22 March 2017 17:50 (seven years ago) link

why is he announcing this

sounds like he's trying to get in front of something

frogbs, Wednesday, 22 March 2017 18:01 (seven years ago) link

a BUS, hopefully!!! hahahahaha!!!

meanwhile my boy Acosta's hearing is going swimmingly:

On other issues, Acosta engaged in a long and contentious exchange with Sen. Elizabeth Warren, a Massachusetts Democrat, over his commitment to protect workers from the health risks of inhaling dust containing crystalline silica.

The Labor Department’s Occupational Safety and Health Administration last year proposed two regulations that would restrict the use of crystalline silica and require contractors to increase protections for their workers.

When inhaled, silica dust can cause cancer and respiratory illness. It is a chemical compound often released from the drilling and cutting of brick, stone and concrete on construction sites or during home remodeling projects.

“Either you’re going to stand up for 150 million American workers, including people being poisoned by silica, or you’re not,” Warren said.

Acosta said that, if confirmed to head the Labor Department, he would first have to review all regulations under a recent executive order from Trump that directed the heads of major federal agencies to eliminate or modify unnecessarily costly or burdensome rules.

“The point I’m trying to make is the president has directed each Cabinet officer to review all rules and to make determinations if any rules should be revised,” Acosta said. “So based on that executive action, I cannot make a commitment.”

That hedge prompted a sharp retort from Warren.

“You’re telling me you can’t say we ought to not take out rules that (if eliminated) will cause people to die,” Warren said.

Russia, ACA, bam bam bam.

Josh in Chicago, Wednesday, 22 March 2017 18:23 (seven years ago) link

It's about 50-50 at this point that Ryan can't get the 27+ votes he needs to pass the bill. Until yesterday I thought it was 70-30 in the bill's favor.

Damn.

the Trump/Russia story has gotten so dense I'm wondering if there should be a separate thread just for untangling it, piecing together connections, contradictions, statements, theories, etc

Evan R, Wednesday, 22 March 2017 18:42 (seven years ago) link

uh, I think you'll find the Russia story was completely fabricated by the Democrats, to cover for the fact that they lost so bad!!

No big deal, just an extra $60 million a year to take care of Trump's scattered family and second homes.

"unusually complicated lifestyle", that's a WaPo keeper.

Wish it was weed smoke. These people all being high would both 1) make the interactions far more stable if not congenial and b) provide a much clearer explanation for the behavior exhibited.

International House of Hot Takes (kingfish), Wednesday, 22 March 2017 18:59 (seven years ago) link

I'm kinda ambivalent about all the Russia stuff tbh. On the one hand I'm deeply skeptical that there's any quid-pro-quo smoking gun out there. On the other hand it's very clear that Yam Co. are so spooked about it that they will lie about it (as they already have) and the odds of one of them doing it under oath seem p high. If I was in the IC trying to take down this administration my strategy would be to leak enough to get somebody subpoenaed, wait until they lie under oath, and then leak evidence that contradicts their testimony, which would get people sent to trial and (maybe) jail. Coverup always worse (and easier to prove) than the crime, etc.

Οὖτις, Wednesday, 22 March 2017 19:05 (seven years ago) link

To my mind it's been less Supervillain Putin and more scheming crime bros, but there ya go.

Ned Raggett, Wednesday, 22 March 2017 19:08 (seven years ago) link

yeah it's hard to really tell because the administration constantly act like children trying to argue their way out of trouble. like it's easy to speculate that they know the Manafort thing could sink them and that's why they're trying so hard to pretend that they barely know him, but on the other hand they're confrontational and dishonest about basically everything, so why should it mean anything at all?

frogbs, Wednesday, 22 March 2017 19:14 (seven years ago) link

Wait, Nunes is still going or something?

https://twitter.com/tomwatson/status/844628015845904385

Wow - Nunes just said there are "multiple FISA warrants out there" involving Trump.

First response to that:

The FOIA lawyers will be buying Nunes drinks for years.

Ned Raggett, Wednesday, 22 March 2017 19:21 (seven years ago) link

wtf is going on this is v odd

Οὖτις, Wednesday, 22 March 2017 19:23 (seven years ago) link

A little earlier:

https://twitter.com/Carrasquillo/status/844625389544726528

Nunes says it's appropriate to brief Trump admin while they're being investigated because it had nothing to do with Russia connections.

Ned Raggett, Wednesday, 22 March 2017 19:24 (seven years ago) link

is this a coup or is Nunes realizing the awesome career-building possibilities of Twitter

i am also Tombot (Neanderthal), Wednesday, 22 March 2017 19:25 (seven years ago) link

is this nunes trying to give trump cover about the bullshit "obama wiretaps?" seems like trump will surely point to this as the evidence unless im missing something
