It's the end of "Russia" as a story

lol c'mon bro

Οὖτις, Wednesday, 22 March 2017 20:27 (seven years ago) link

this is obviously what Trump was talking about when he said he would be "vindicated" though, even tho it has zero to do with what he actually claimed in his tweetstorm. It's retroactive ass-covering, and p sloppy at that.

Οὖτις, Wednesday, 22 March 2017 20:28 (seven years ago) link

This shit has been happening for a year and a half. Some insane, disqualifying thing about Trump comes up and he shuts it down by deflection. Not even savvy deflection. Crude, stupid, baseless accusations that somehow catch on and become conventional wisdom.

Treeship, Wednesday, 22 March 2017 20:29 (seven years ago) link

xpost true and I think Treezy is way off about Russia being over as a story as it's already survived with surprising resilience. but we'd be naive to assume some non-critical thinking idiots aren't just looking at the byline and calling it a day.

when I posted the CNN "bill would result in fine for masturbating" story the other day, I could tell who hadn't clicked through to the story prior to reacting. retractions/clarifications/corrections wont' matter. the press needs to get it right the first time now. editorialize the fuck out of this. the byline should be "Nune states Trump data might have been legally collected, does not corroborate Trump claims"

i am also Tombot (Neanderthal), Wednesday, 22 March 2017 20:30 (seven years ago) link

Remember when Sarah Palin said Paul Revere set out to warn the British? And every smart person said "no, you twit, he was warning colonists ABOUT the British?"

And then somebody else dorksplained "Actually, Revere was captured and told the British that armed militias were coming for them." And so like all these mouthbreathing Limbaughian Palinheads were like SARAH WAS RIGHT ALL ALONG!!!?

That.

takin care of bismuth (Ye Mad Puffin), Wednesday, 22 March 2017 20:31 (seven years ago) link

"It concerned me enough to have to notify the President," Nunes said. "It's not fair for him not to know what's in these reports" while the Obama administration does.

did you forget the part about Trump BEING PART OF THE INVESTIGATION?

i am also Tombot (Neanderthal), Wednesday, 22 March 2017 20:33 (seven years ago) link

Well his 'get out' clause appears to be that it's not Russia-related. (Which, I know, but bear with me.)

I also dont really get how this is news? This is 100% what happened to Flynn. He was on the phone with subject of FISA warrants, his info was minimized but when they went back to review in light of the investigation it got brought into the open.

i was not aware that 2017 was "do whatever the fuck you want to do if you are rich there are no rules" year. OH RIGHT I FORGOT THAT'S EVERY YEAR

If by Obama you mean others & by October you mean other months & by wiretapping you mean incidental collection then yes Trump's vindicated

I am not following any of this stuff this week. Neither is anyone besides political junkies.

Dear Dems: what is the endgame of the Russia stuff?

Supercreditor (Dr Morbius), Wednesday, 22 March 2017 20:47 (seven years ago) link

a more just society built on the ashes of a corrupt and discredited political leadership?

I called him a traitor and an idiot (and I don't see how either are disputable, tbh), but I don't actually care if he gets prosecuted or not. just to be clear.

and my unpopular take is that thanks in part to these investigations Trump's bargaining posture on the Hill has dwindled to nothing such that tomorrow's ACA bill might be doomed. You don't have to care, but I don't understand what's so hard about this strategy except as a way to justify a it's-beyond-me languor.

The Dems has also been hammering that Gorsuch shouldn't be confirmed while the guy who nominated him is under investigation for possible treason. It helps the Dems defend being obstructionist.

Also, the way things are going, I half expect Manafort and Stone to have directly collaborated with the Russians.

You forgot Flynn. Also, YA THINK?

Not the real Tombot (El Tomboto), Wednesday, 22 March 2017 21:30 (seven years ago) link

Flynn was busy trying to cut Turkey in on the deal.

The house intelligence committees investigation going down in flames would just intensify the calls for a truly independent prosecutor. It's not a particularly good thing for Trump. Or at least really short-sighted.

― Supercreditor (Dr Morbius), Wednesday, March 22, 2017 1:49 PM (thirty-one minutes ago)

well, of course. if nothing is found, it won't harm trump. whereas if something is found, it might! this should be self-evident.

the apathetic-nihilist "both Trump/Russia & Clinton/emails are molehills" argument is complete bullshit though. we know clinton/emails(/benghazi) was a "molehill" because it was aggressively investigated for years. in comparison, we know next to nothing about trump/russia, and the investigation has barely begun.

Balðy Daudrs (contenderizer), Wednesday, 22 March 2017 21:32 (seven years ago) link

BTW the Supreme Court unanimously overturned a Neil Gorsuch decision *during his hearings today*. Someone asked him about it in the hearing -- apparently trying to elicit whether that might indicate he's out of step with the Court -- and his answer was basically ¯\_(ツ)_/¯
