looks like eliminating this minimum menu requirement has been added to the bill, this will probably win enough of the Freedom Caucus guys over. Someone in the Senate should be pushing back about the bill being DOA though, and people need to lean on any "moderates" that might swing their votes to no

Οὖτις, Wednesday, 22 March 2017 23:37 (seven years ago) link

i love that it just wasn't quite shitty enough for these guys, and that's why they were opposed. now it has been sufficiently enshittened.

This meeting happened...

President Trump met with leaders of the Congressional Black Caucus on Wednesday, pulling reporters into the room to hear him praise African Americans.

“They’ve lifted up the conscience of our nation in the march toward civil rights, enriched the soul of America in their faith and courage, and they’ve advanced our country in the fields of science, arts and medicine,” the president said.

As he spoke, the CBC’s six-member executive board was sitting on the other side of a table — out of the TV cameras’ shot. That was no accident. The CBC, many members of which boycotted Trump’s inauguration, agreed to meet with the president only if the meeting was substantive.

“The Congressional Black Caucus is not going to be a potted plant or a photo opportunity,” said Rep. Donald A. McEachin (D-Va.), a CBC member who did not attend the meeting. “He did a photo op with the presidents of historically black colleges, and they got nothing.”

"The FBI has information that indicates associates of President Donald Trump communicated with *suspected* Russian operatives to *possibly* coordinate the release of information damaging to Hillary Clinton's campaign".

I don't even know how to interpret these articles

substantive news (is this even illegal?) or just continuing the drumbeat of anti-trump coverage? both?

I assume this drum beat is all about Manafort. Curious if the DOJ is leaning on him to cop a plea if what they have on him is really salacious.

Health Bill Teeters as Fence-Sitters Face Pressure From Party
Many Republicans have been left with an excruciating choice: pass a deeply unpopular bill that could wreak havoc with their own voters, or turn it back and wound the president’s agenda.

idk this doesn't really seem that excruciating

This is what they think the spy game is like. This is the level of competence they come with. They need you to pee in the cup for them, because national security, okay? There might be a cop taking a shit, but sometimes you have to take risks. There is not a stupider set of people you could have in charge of this country. Not even with a time machine.

I can't really get any of the schadenfreude juice out of this shit because (as mentioned somewhere around here, today) if something actually terrible and bad happens, with these profoundly, epically stupid fucks in charge, thousands of people are probably going to die.

Also, I realized I won't really be able to be OK with this shit until after this guy is in the ground, because he's going to have to have a USSS detail around the clock until then. So we're never going to stop paying for the professional protection of this guy and his family until he's gone. And all these dumb fucking hicks I grew up around and served with just want to be pissed off about how their dimes go to crappy art and some science shit about snails. Let me tell you, asshole, what I want to take out of MY budget.

It's getting into the weeds here, but if something serious - that is to say, impeachable - were to come of all this, is the line of succession even clear?

Josh in Chicago, Thursday, 23 March 2017 02:34 (seven years ago) link

Yes

Οὖτις, Thursday, 23 March 2017 02:35 (seven years ago) link

Its in the Constitution. Pence > Hatch > Ryan > Tillerson.

Impeachment not gonna happen and not likely to improve things even if it did.

Οὖτις, Thursday, 23 March 2017 02:37 (seven years ago) link

Ryan is ahead of Hatch

I just meant if there were endemic corruption demonstrated (just talking hypothetical) then it's not so simple as just going down the list, is it? They'd have to have investigations and clean up the mess first. Like, if a hunk of the white house, the cabinet, etc. were all tainted by this stuff, then it's not so simple.

Josh in Chicago, Thursday, 23 March 2017 03:28 (seven years ago) link

While I'm skeptical impeachment will happen it obviously would wound the GOP in a larger sense by the very fact of it happening, would taint the party badly for the next election. It's very much something we should root for despite how awful Pence is.

and after the most extensive set of corruption-related scandals, resignations, and indictments of all time, the line of succession to the presidency of the united states reached its way down to Dorothy Kenson, Assistant Deputy Director of the Federal Grain Inspection Service under the Grain Inspection, Packers and Stockyards Administration within the Department of Agriculture.
