ok that Elaine Chao thing is pretty fucking weird

frogbs, Thursday, 23 March 2017 02:20 (seven years ago) link

It's getting into the weeds here, but if something serious - that is to say, impeachable - were to come of all this, is the line of succession even clear?

Josh in Chicago, Thursday, 23 March 2017 02:34 (seven years ago) link

Yes

Οὖτις, Thursday, 23 March 2017 02:35 (seven years ago) link

Its in the Constitution. Pence > Hatch > Ryan > Tillerson.

Impeachment not gonna happen and not likely to improve things even if it did.

Οὖτις, Thursday, 23 March 2017 02:37 (seven years ago) link

Ryan is ahead of Hatch

I can't really get any of the schadenfreude juice out of this shit because (as mentioned somewhere around here, today) if something actually terrible and bad happens, with these profoundly, epically stupid fucks in charge, thousands of people are probably going to die.

Also, I realized I won't really be able to be OK with this shit until after this guy is in the ground, because he's going to have to have a USSS detail around the clock until then. So we're never going to stop paying for the professional protection of this guy and his family until he's gone. And all these dumb fucking hicks I grew up around and served with just want to be pissed off about how their dimes go to crappy art and some science shit about snails. Let me tell you, asshole, what I want to take out of MY budget.

I just meant if there were endemic corruption demonstrated (just talking hypothetical) then it's not so simple as just going down the list, is it? They'd have to have investigations and clean up the mess first. Like, if a hunk of the white house, the cabinet, etc. were all tainted by this stuff, then it's not so simple.

Josh in Chicago, Thursday, 23 March 2017 03:28 (seven years ago) link

While I'm skeptical impeachment will happen it obviously would wound the GOP in a larger sense by the very fact of it happening, would taint the party badly for the next election. It's very much something we should root for despite how awful Pence is.

and after the most extensive set of corruption-related scandals, resignations, and indictments of all time, the line of succession to the presidency of the united states reached its way down to Dorothy Kenson, Assistant Deputy Director of the Federal Grain Inspection Service under the Grain Inspection, Packers and Stockyards Administration within the Department of Agriculture.

i'd say 100% chance, if the campaign manager of a democratic presidential candidate had been paid $10 million by the russian government to advance their interests, ten years ago or ten days ago, fox/koch nation would erupt in a paroxysm of second amendment solutions. what the fuck is wrong with this country?

i feel like we're a giant junior high, say a sixth or seventh grade with 100 kids, and the ten mean/cool/rich/popular kids have convinced about twenty more weak-minded wannabe kids to make it their number one priority in life that all ninety non-mean/cool/rich/popular kids should bow down before the ten mean/cool/rich/popular kids and do/believe whatever they say, no matter what the seventy or so rest of us want. i might be overestimating our collective maturity though

It is not normal for people to be shot dead in the street, no.

Depends on your definition of normal but there is nothing to suggest this has anything to do with the US.

My two year old son gets annoyed when adults are talking about adult stuff and not about him. He used to yell, "Stop talking!" but now he tries to act like he's part of the conversation. He stands between us and shouts, "Donald Truuuuump!"

I figure this is what its like when Trump talks to foreign leaders.

But I inherited a mess, I inherited a mess in so many ways. I inherited a mess in the Middle East, and a mess with North Korea, I inherited a mess with jobs, despite the statistics, you know, my statistics are even better, but they are not the real statistics because you have millions of people that can’t get a job, ok. And I inherited a mess on trade. I mean we have many, you can go up and down the ladder. But that’s the story. Hey look, in the mean time, I guess, I can’t be doing so badly, because I’m president, and you’re not. You know. Say hello to everybody OK?

I guess after promising their voters for 7 years that they'll repeal Obamacare if given power, they assume they'll face primary challenges, or that their base won't turn out for them in '18
