i'd love for someone to ask trump an even moderately specific question about this legislation (not the process, which he understands to be deal-making, but the actual differences between this and the ACA) during a tv interview

𝔠𝔞𝔢𝔨 (caek), Thursday, 23 March 2017 18:16 (seven years ago) link

Well as we all know Obamacare is a disaster. Premiums are rising, 30, 40, even 120% in some cases, it's unbelievable. They don't know how to negotiate. It's such a disaster, nobody's even seen anything like it. So what we've done here is, we've created great healthcare. You're going to be very happy with it.

I did hear him say that there would be "plans no one's even thought of yet" a few weeks ago, so more of that probably. xxp

Also remember in all of this that Ryan is a maniac who fundamentally believes that the country will rally around a bill which cuts government assistance to the one, if only they get the chance.

Trump voter own-goals reach their acme: http://indianapublicmedia.org/news/indiana-restaurant-owner-deported-friday-116463/

Roberto decided not to self deport because Helen was pregnant at the time. An ICE spokesperson says when Roberto failed to deport himself, his voluntary order revered to a final order of removal, meaning ICE could detain him. They didn’t act on that order for more than a decade.

. . . During an interview earlier this month, Helen said she voted for President Donald Trump because she supports his immigration policies. She said criminals should be deported, but she didn’t think her husband would face that fate.

“[Trump] did say the good people would not be deported, the good people would be checked,” Helen said.

"So...marriage counseling?"

Anyway, guy's right:

https://twitter.com/NateSilver538/status/844977905335644160

It isn't easy to come up with a bill that's disliked so much both by policy experts AND by the general public. It's sort of amazing.

Ned Raggett, Thursday, 23 March 2017 18:32 (seven years ago) link

Re that Indiana story, worth going back to the original interview with her:

http://indianapublicmedia.org/news/family-speaks-indiana-restaurant-owner-detained-ice-115685/

Helen says she agrees with the President’s stance on the issue.

“We don’t want to have cartels here, you don’t want to have drugs in your high schools, you don’t want killers next to you,” Helen says. “You want to feel safe when you leave your house. I truly believe that. And, this is why I voted for Mr. Trump.”

But Helen doesn’t understand why her husband is among those being detained. She says he’s an upstanding business owner who’s in the process of applying for a green card – not a criminal.

Kiiiiinda hoping maybe the penny's dropped with her by now. But you have to wonder.

"Well I think that if you’re an older man, you can generally say you’re not going to need maternity care."

This sentence was just spoken out loud on television by the press secretary to a 70-year-old-man who has a 46-year-old wife and 11-year-old son.

i just wish all these poor people bitching about losing their health insurance would understand how painful it is to write huge checks to the IRS year after year. where's the compassion?

reggie (qualmsley), Thursday, 23 March 2017 18:47 (seven years ago) link

It's worth noting that a lot of muttering-turned-shouting over the past couple of weeks from right-leaning types, up to/including reps and senators, has been "Why are RUSHING this bill?"

This is such classic stalling the inevitable. It's not like any of these people can sincerely believe the bill will ever get BETTER. The one thing you can say for pushing it down the calendar is it means they don't have to commit either way for a longer stretch of time, and they can spend the recess dispensing stock lines about "I think this needs a lot more study, we want to get it right" rather than having to defend their vote on it. The town hall counterargument ("Further study? What have you been DOING for the last seven years?") is a potent one, and will still bruise them, but it's not as bad as outright voting for something your constituents hate, or against the president your other constituents consider the God-Emperor of America. Given the Congressional campaign cycle, kicking the can down the road even a few months is tremendous breathing room vs. future attack ads, outraged constituents, fake outraged constituents, etc. etc.

"proof that at least some part of society seems willing to reject the hateful rhetoric that's permeating the government"

It all boils down to education, as always. The more educated people are, the more likely they are to make a good decision. So, easy to say I hate Obamacare! But once you find out it's a) the same as the ACA and b) its repeal would be personally damaging, it's harder to say I hate Obamacare! Same thing with immigration, taxes, all sorts of shit, save perhaps abortion, whose opposition is morality/religious based. And maybe guns, which are innately irrational.
