Oh Sean.

Sean Spicer just compared Roger Stone to someone Trump sat next to on an airplane one time. Here's how Stone sees it in his book

i just wish all these poor people bitching about losing their health insurance would understand how painful it is to write huge checks to the IRS year after year. where's the compassion?

reggie (qualmsley), Thursday, 23 March 2017 18:47 (seven years ago) link

It's worth noting that a lot of muttering-turned-shouting over the past couple of weeks from right-leaning types, up to/including reps and senators, has been "Why are RUSHING this bill?"

This is such classic stalling the inevitable. It's not like any of these people can sincerely believe the bill will ever get BETTER. The one thing you can say for pushing it down the calendar is it means they don't have to commit either way for a longer stretch of time, and they can spend the recess dispensing stock lines about "I think this needs a lot more study, we want to get it right" rather than having to defend their vote on it. The town hall counterargument ("Further study? What have you been DOING for the last seven years?") is a potent one, and will still bruise them, but it's not as bad as outright voting for something your constituents hate, or against the president your other constituents consider the God-Emperor of America. Given the Congressional campaign cycle, kicking the can down the road even a few months is tremendous breathing room vs. future attack ads, outraged constituents, fake outraged constituents, etc. etc.

the redacting thing is brilliant and should have been done all throughout the campaign.

"proof that at least some part of society seems willing to reject the hateful rhetoric that's permeating the government"

It all boils down to education, as always. The more educated people are, the more likely they are to make a good decision. So, easy to say I hate Obamacare! But once you find out it's a) the same as the ACA and b) its repeal would be personally damaging, it's harder to say I hate Obamacare! Same thing with immigration, taxes, all sorts of shit, save perhaps abortion, whose opposition is morality/religious based. And maybe guns, which are innately irrational.

Ned Raggett, Thursday, 23 March 2017 19:23 (seven years ago) link

That would be almost Andy Kaufman level.

Ned Raggett, Thursday, 23 March 2017 19:24 (seven years ago) link

Also Ryan's postponed his second press conference of the day.

As health care vote gets scrapped for tonight, here's Trump in a big rig on the White House driveway honking the horn & pretending to drive

(•̪●) (carne asada), Thursday, 23 March 2017 19:49 (seven years ago) link

God, so many missed opportunities in moments like that. Just let him drive the big rig! Please! What's the worst that could happen, I ask you?!

On CNN Senior White House official now saying the vote will be tomorrow morning. lol

You're going to see a lot of love. Okay? Thank you. (Dan Peterson), Thursday, 23 March 2017 19:51 (seven years ago) link

I'm sitting here watching that going "man, look at all of those delighted white people" and then the camera zooms waaaaay out and includes Omarosa standing 100 ft in the back and I'm just thinking that if this was a scene in a fictional movie, people would bag on the script and director for being so heavy-handed with the subtext.

Rachel Luther Queen (DJP), Thursday, 23 March 2017 19:52 (seven years ago) link

if i'm trump i take away everyone's health care but my kids and grandkids, because fuck you america -- i'm the boss!

I feel like that Trump-in-the-truck footage is gonna be part of the all-time politicians-self-owning clip reel, like Dukakis in the tank or George W Bush saying "Now watch this drive."

"There. Got it out."

Ned Raggett, Thursday, 23 March 2017 20:03 (seven years ago) link

from the Time interview

Trump: And then TIME magazine, which treats me horribly, but obviously I sell, I assume this is going to be a cover too, have I set the record? I guess, right? Covers, nobody’s had more covers.

Time: I think Richard Nixon still has you beat. But he was in office for longer, so give yourself time.

Trump: Ok good. I’m sure I’ll win.

Do you think Trump gets a Hess truck every Christmas? I bet that's exciting for him.

Evan, Thursday, 23 March 2017 20:10 (seven years ago) link

I'd assume that "I'm sure I'll win" remark was a kind of self-deprecating joke if it came from anybody else, anybody who wasn't pure self-regard
