Oh and new CBO report!

New CBO report: less deficit reduction ($150b); uninsured # the same

https://www.cbo.gov/system/files/115th-congress-2017-2018/costestimate/hr1628.pdf

Whomp whomp.

And...uh...

https://twitter.com/christinawilkie/status/845006141167947778

Pro-AHCA Rep. Tom McClintock just compared the bill to the Titanic, with some weird “safety first” metaphor. Poor choice of words.

Ned Raggett, Thursday, 23 March 2017 21:18 (seven years ago) link

Also fun!

https://twitter.com/mfcannon/status/845020749991743490

Sources: House leadership threatens to pull bill to preserve #ObamaCare, and then blame House @freedomcaucus for ObamaCare still being law.

Ned Raggett, Thursday, 23 March 2017 21:20 (seven years ago) link

uh wasn't that Ryan's threat all along

Οὖτις, Thursday, 23 March 2017 21:22 (seven years ago) link

what other leverage did he have

Οὖτις, Thursday, 23 March 2017 21:22 (seven years ago) link

he could eat the Caucus

i am also Tombot (Neanderthal), Thursday, 23 March 2017 21:23 (seven years ago) link

If that is Ryan's strategy, hoo boy, considering the Freedom Cock stance is that the new ACA doesn't repeal the old one enough.

Josh in Chicago, Thursday, 23 March 2017 21:24 (seven years ago) link

Presumably said threat is now being spelled out. Not that I think, say, Amash is some great guy but I have a feeling he's laughing loudly in response as I type.

Ned Raggett, Thursday, 23 March 2017 21:25 (seven years ago) link

generally speaking it's best not to make a threat that easily leaks to FB so everybody knows your move in advance

i am also Tombot (Neanderthal), Thursday, 23 March 2017 21:26 (seven years ago) link

err twitter

i am also Tombot (Neanderthal), Thursday, 23 March 2017 21:26 (seven years ago) link

i'm tempted to celebrate but it's a little premature for that. they could still come to some sort of agreement on the amount of awfulness that they can all accept

Karl Malone, Thursday, 23 March 2017 21:27 (seven years ago) link

Indeed so.

Ned Raggett, Thursday, 23 March 2017 21:29 (seven years ago) link

Freedom Cock don't seem like they'd take well to being threatened themselves, especially since, as a product of the Tea Party, they're the ones who got elected running against the same sort of party line people now supposedly threatening them toe.

Josh in Chicago, Thursday, 23 March 2017 21:30 (seven years ago) link

More fun

Oooooof.. Just spoke to "yes" vote Member who is on the edge of panic. "I'm all the way out there on this and..."

In his despair, Deace is actually getting funny. Thus this in response to Bannon arriving on the scene:

Because it's not already a mess enough, here comes Cousin Eddie to save the Griswold Family Christmas.

Ned Raggett, Thursday, 23 March 2017 21:33 (seven years ago) link

I'm cautiously optimistic that everyone involved are such colossally incompetent assholes that no deal will be struck. The Freedom Caucus basically can't be appeased because they will brook no compromise, ever, but Ryan is bound to them because he can't pass any bills w out them, since he won't go to the Dems for votes.

Οὖτις, Thursday, 23 March 2017 21:33 (seven years ago) link

Such a dealmaker!

https://www.axios.com/the-new-reality-on-trump-and-the-freedom-caucus-2326976583.html

House leadership has been hoping that President Trump would turn the screws on the Freedom Caucus. They'd love nothing more than for Trump to threaten Freedom Caucus members like Mark Meadows with primary challenges. In fact, they were banking on Trump doing that. They thought he could break the Freedom Caucus.

The emerging reality: Trump is doing nothing of the sort. He was joking when he told Meadows in the GOP conference meeting earlier this week that he'd come after him. And in today's White House meeting Trump did not brow-beat the Freedom Caucus members or make a hard sell on a "final offer."

According to three sources in the room for the meeting, Trump didn't demand loyalty tests, and there was lots of laughing, jokes, and stories.

Ned Raggett, Thursday, 23 March 2017 21:36 (seven years ago) link

So what, is it supposed to be Bannon/Priebus as the bad cop to Trump's good cop?

illegal economic migration (Tracer Hand), Thursday, 23 March 2017 22:04 (seven years ago) link

Hello, Schiff is upping the ante:

http://edition.cnn.com/2017/03/23/politics/adam-schiff-trump-russia-grand-jury/index.html

The top Democrat on the House Intelligence Committee is claiming that he has been presented with new information on collusion between associates of President Donald Trump and Russia that would merit a grand jury investigation.

Rep. Adam Schiff told CNN Thursday that he had seen additional evidence, but would not specify what it was.

"We continue to get new information that, I think, paints a more complete picture of at least what we know at the outset of our investigation," Schiff said.

Asked to explain his comments earlier in the week when he said there was more than just "circumstantial evidence of collusion," Schiff said, "I do think that it's appropriate to say that it's the kind of evidence that you would submit to a grand jury at the beginning of an investigation.

Ned Raggett, Thursday, 23 March 2017 22:05 (seven years ago) link

That's cool but we've been hearing noises like that for months. Right?

So confused about what Nunes is doing here. He said Trump and/or team were incidentally recorded as part of investigation into foreign targets in Trump Tower (I think?) And he gave Trump the heads up on this, before he even told his colleagues. Holds a big ol' press conference. MAGA types crow that their man's been vindicated. Nunes himself in interviews says "So the President was kind of right!" But now he says maybe.... none of that happened?

illegal economic migration (Tracer Hand), Thursday, 23 March 2017 22:08 (seven years ago) link

Noises, yes, but I think you have to keep in mind that Comey's confirmation on Monday formally kicked the door open. There was plenty of speculation, that was on the record confirmation.

As for what Nunes was doing, looks like kinda stupid interference for no real gain.

Ned Raggett, Thursday, 23 March 2017 22:11 (seven years ago) link

I think he was just deliberately trying to be confusing just as long as the "trump vindicated" byline was the end result.

i am also Tombot (Neanderthal), Thursday, 23 March 2017 22:12 (seven years ago) link

Trump specifically mentioned his sweet sweet vindication in that Times interview of lies and nonsense that came out today

Not much gain, though. Those inclined to believe him continue to, etc.

Ned Raggett, Thursday, 23 March 2017 22:14 (seven years ago) link

it was more of a hail mary than anything, in hindsight

i am also Tombot (Neanderthal), Thursday, 23 March 2017 22:14 (seven years ago) link

Nunes basically threw himself under a bus. Even Trump's initial claim of vindication, brought on by prodding, seemed hedgy and unsure. "I somewhat do."

Josh in Chicago, Thursday, 23 March 2017 22:15 (seven years ago) link

Light on the horizon! Folks like Sam Brownback, Paul Le Page and Butch Otter praise AHCA!

Ned Raggett, Thursday, 23 March 2017 22:16 (seven years ago) link

xpost the vagueness of his statement plus the number of contradictions ("we know for sure", "we're not sure yet", etc etc) kinda prove that the message itself was secondary to the byline. it was a "WITNESS!!!!" warboy moment
