An ugly image

Anyway I wouldn't be surprised if they come out with something that makes the Freedom Caucus happy but then makes a lot of others go "What? Fuck you!" And the game begins again...

Meaning of all people, this guy is probably right:

Heading into conference, @replouiegohmert says still too many competing demands to get to yes for enough members.

I assume that meanwhile Trump is still talking to Kellyanne or whoever about the truck.

Ned Raggett, Thursday, 23 March 2017 23:31 (seven years ago) link

the bill they'll settle on is that insurance is now illegal and everybody pays doctors direct

McCarthy on health care vote: Tomorrow is a good day..I think we'll get it tomorrow

Ned Raggett, Thursday, 23 March 2017 23:35 (seven years ago) link

Oh and it turns out Kellyanne plus Mulvaney are in that meeting too. Talk about a soulsucking room.

Ned Raggett, Thursday, 23 March 2017 23:37 (seven years ago) link

McCarthy is a hack, he was sure it was gonna pass today remember

Οὖτις, Thursday, 23 March 2017 23:39 (seven years ago) link

But he's OUR hack. Or at least the Central Valley's.

Ned Raggett, Thursday, 23 March 2017 23:41 (seven years ago) link

"we'll get it tomorrow" is something a baseball manager says after 1 game of a 3 game series

i am also Tombot (Neanderthal), Thursday, 23 March 2017 23:42 (seven years ago) link

President Donald Trump is demanding a vote Friday in the House on the Republican plan to repeal and replace Obamacare, White House Budget Director Mick Mulvaney said. If the bill fails, Trump is prepared to move on and leave Obamacare in place, Mulvaney said.

DEALS GETTIN' MADE

Crazy Eddie & Jesus the Kid (Raymond Cummings), Thursday, 23 March 2017 23:47 (seven years ago) link

If he says he's fine with leaving it in place that means this thing is dead, right? I don't really understand American politics anymore tho tbf

stet, Thursday, 23 March 2017 23:47 (seven years ago) link

if they "leave obamacare in place" deliberately how soon will they go back to calling it the ACA instead of "Obamacare"

marcos, Thursday, 23 March 2017 23:48 (seven years ago) link

I mean he doesn't really have full sway over that, Congress can pass whatever bill they want, and he's free to veto it knowing that the 2/3rds vote to override him is unlikely, but would he really veto another attempt at a replacement bill?

with that being said, they probably will leave it and say "we tried".

i am also Tombot (Neanderthal), Thursday, 23 March 2017 23:52 (seven years ago) link

Chump gettin tired of deal making lol

― marcos, Thursday, March 23, 2017 11:48 PM (three minutes ago)

if they did that instead of passing a new bill and trump started bragging on twitter about how he had given us this awesome thing called "the affordable care act" i guarantee at least some ppl would buy it

(The Other) J.D. (J.D.), Thursday, 23 March 2017 23:54 (seven years ago) link

i'm holding off popping the cork for now but man this would be a colossal failure for the GOP and a relief. but on the flipside....guarantee they won't help fix the issues with Obamacare either, as they have intimated, just wanting it to fail on its own.

i am also Tombot (Neanderthal), Thursday, 23 March 2017 23:56 (seven years ago) link

xpost there was already an ex-first grade teacher quoted by Maddow the other day who thanked Trump for his 'tax credit' in reducing their insurance premium.

I'm pretty sure something will pass, even if it's an emasculated nothing that allows members to return to their districts in northwestern Arkansas and say, "See? I tried to kill Obamacare, but the establishment didn't let me!"

Crazy Eddie & Jesus the Kid (Raymond Cummings), Thursday, 23 March 2017 23:58 (seven years ago) link

lol i guess he's done with obamacare being an urgent, nation-threatening meltdown crisis on account of its imminent catastrophic collapse? twenty-four hours later, it's the family car that's running okay despite that weird noise that only kicks in when you get into third gear. good enough if we can't come up with something else, definitely we can keep it going. maybe wait a few months til last year's model bills get discounted, or just keep an eye on craigslist, maybe a good deal comes around.

let's see how that goes

How is this different from me being shadowed by Amazon, showing me pictures of shit I already bought, or looked at a week ago?

"I made a phone call to a shop three weeks ago, and now the manager and five of the casual staff are sitting in my wardrobe watching me fuck my wife every night. Fair enough, as I expected."

(±\ PLO;;;;;;; Style (sic), Friday, 24 March 2017 00:04 (seven years ago) link

although i'm sure this is a rare case of trump's business-advice-bestseller instincts kicking in- that whole reverse psychology at the table thing, gosh, well, if we can't work something out then i guess we'll just KEEP OBAMACARE, hey, doesn't matter to me......... and then hope the freedom caucus comes to its senses. but nothing abt the rest of this whole thing seems remotely canny or worked out in advance, esp. the idea that the end of the spectrum they had to win over was the nothing-is-ever-pure-enough nutso wing.

tales of a scorched-earth nothing (Doctor Casino), Friday, 24 March 2017 00:05 (seven years ago) link

and he thinks his other "priorities" have a chance should this bill fail tomorrow or this weekend!

the Rain Man of nationalism. (Alfred, Lord Sotosyn), Friday, 24 March 2017 00:06 (seven years ago) link

To Trump, the biggest fact in his field of vision is his dropping poll numbers and he rightly sees the AHCA as a big part of that. He never had any interest in what replaced the ACA, so he passed the job off to Ryan and his buddies. They delivered a dud.

He has no ideas other than the brilliant one that bcz he's certain the ACA is a total disaster, if he leaves it in place the Dems will continue to take the blame for it and he can just walk away from it. Yes, sir. Smart man, that Mr. Trump.

Congress won't see it his way, I'm thinking. They'll keep flailing at it until they can figure out something or else they get voted out.

the Rain Man of nationalism. (Alfred, Lord Sotosyn), Friday, 24 March 2017 00:21 (seven years ago) link

Not that it would penetrate the noise, but the progressive dems ought to be thinking about tweaks they'd like to see to improve the ACA, so they have a policy position apart from drinking beer.

a little too mature to be cute (Aimless), Friday, 24 March 2017 00:23 (seven years ago) link

They do; the tweak is Medicare for All.

softie (silby), Friday, 24 March 2017 00:25 (seven years ago) link

Drinking beer seems like a great tweak.

Effects on Health Insurance Coverage CBO and JCT estimate that, in 2018, 14 million more people would be uninsured under the legislation than under current law. The increase in the number of uninsured people relative to the number under current law would reach 21 million in 2020 and 24 million in 2026 (see Table 4). In 2026, an estimated 52 million people under age 65 would be uninsured, compared with 28 million who would lack insurance that year under current law.

At the rate this is going, Single Payer in 2021 seems possible. I don't think Obama would complain either.

Frederik B, Friday, 24 March 2017 01:19 (seven years ago) link

I am not so sanguine about single payer, even if I'd be very happy to see it. The bugaboo of 'socialized medicine' is still very powerful in the USA, despite the extreme popularity of Medicare.

I do not take the complete disarray in Congress as a sign that something positive is about to happen. Our system is set up to make it easy for the majority to be thwarted by a minority, unless the majority is overwhelming. No overwhelming majorities seem immanent.

game theory guy sad rant lol

k3vin k., Friday, 24 March 2017 01:28 (seven years ago) link

It seems as if it would be really simple to actually do socialized medicine, though. A lot of people will be screaming out for SOMETHING or other in 2021, and socialized medicine might be easy to pass through budget reconciliation with just 50 votes. A backlash would be inevitable, but four years later, people would want to keep their improved healthcare.

This is me thinking about an area where I know even less than usual, though.

Frederik B, Friday, 24 March 2017 01:33 (seven years ago) link

we know

mookieproof, Friday, 24 March 2017 01:34 (seven years ago) link

Frederik, the latest version of this bill demanded the rescinding of covering people with pre-existing conditions and kicking off people under 26 from their parents' insurance. Single payer is Communism.
