House just declared in recess...?

What was the drama at the very end of the CSPAN comments? Seems like after the gavel, there was a lot of shouting and grumbling.

brotherlovesdub, Friday, 24 March 2017 19:32 (seven years ago) link

to a chorus of boos, of course

he must be soooooo sympathetic on the phone "Aw geez Don, that sounds rough! You must be so upset."

the Rain Man of nationalism. (Alfred, Lord Sotosyn), Friday, 24 March 2017 19:40 (seven years ago) link

this is, like, shades of the 2005 Social Security reform debacle.

softie (silby), Friday, 24 March 2017 19:41 (seven years ago) link

only accelerated and more public and more embarrassing

Shep Smith throwing the Freedom Caucus under the 18 Wheeler being maniacally driven by Trump on Fox right now. Paul Ryan new conf. at top of the hour.

There's an actual massive junkyard fire underway right now just up 95 from Washington. Feel free to use as metaphor.

man these fucks are seriously talking about "tax reform" now passing "more successfully."

the Rain Man of nationalism. (Alfred, Lord Sotosyn), Friday, 24 March 2017 19:43 (seven years ago) link

do we think they'll really give up on another attempt after this? keep the promise of 'leaving Obamacare' and not risk another public embarrassment?

Holy smokes. This also entirely destroys the president's bluff for the next round of negotiations. He just straight up folded.

I regret that @POTUS @realDonaldTrump and @SpeakerRyan agreed to pull the bill. Accountability for both sides of argument useful.

wow i am really enjoying this

do we think they'll really give up on another attempt after this? keep the promise of 'leaving Obamacare' and not risk another public embarrassment?

they just squandered all of their political capital on this. Public opposition to full-bore/extreme repeal is only going to grow from now on. And if they go for a more moderate "fix" bill they'll need Dem votes, and Ryan (and Trump) won't do that. This was their shot and the blew it.

Οὖτις, Friday, 24 March 2017 19:50 (seven years ago) link

And like I said:

https://twitter.com/Nate_Cohn/status/845361256311742466

Politically, this is the best outcome for the GOP

And again, true. Nobody's on record for anything, theoretically 'something' can happen. But their great big plan for the month blew up, the end.

Baier on FOX News about GOP caucus: "They're freaking out. Really freaking out."

the Rain Man of nationalism. (Alfred, Lord Sotosyn), Friday, 24 March 2017 19:52 (seven years ago) link

i don't think I agree w/ Cohn now. that looked like it'd be the case at the beginning of the day but the repeated insistences that "we'll get there", "there will definitely be a vote" and the fingerpointing and public-leaked backstabbing is all a matter of public record now. the vote might have been worse had it happened but best case for the GOP was NOT RUSHING THE BILL IN THE FIRST PLACE.

i am also Tombot (Neanderthal), Friday, 24 March 2017 19:53 (seven years ago) link

As I just said on FB, sometimes having a pants-shitting imbecile for a President is hilarious and awesome. Most of the time, though, it's not. This is a moment to be savored, but we shouldn't let our guard down.

Don Van Gorp, midwest regional VP, marketing (誤訳侮辱), Friday, 24 March 2017 19:53 (seven years ago) link

if markets are up in relief at the death of this stupid bill then surely this is just the master persuader at work???

Politically, this is the best outcome for the GOP

And again, true

idk it's more like "least bad" and even then it's still bad - Trump can't keep his party together, can't fulfill a basic campaign promise, can't manage legislation etc. And Ryan is back where Boehner was.

Οὖτις, Friday, 24 March 2017 19:54 (seven years ago) link

so far the Trump presidency is going basically exactly how I imagined it would

frogbs, Friday, 24 March 2017 19:54 (seven years ago) link

i see why they didn't hold the vote (plausible deniabilty for individual GOP reps), but they just also lost the ability to blame any problems with obamacare during trump's term on the democrats.

𝔠𝔞𝔢𝔨 (caek), Friday, 24 March 2017 19:54 (seven years ago) link

man what a gift-wrap for the Dems, didn't even really have to do anything to earn it

well it's their only victory strategy of late

https://twitter.com/maggieNYT/status/845362688557486081

TRUMP tells me in interview this is now the Democrats' fault, and that he anticipates that when Obama "explodes" they will be ready to deal

Completely agreed. But crunch time came, and it really was the only thing they could do.

And the countdown to resignation begins...

Phrased otherwise:

Costa on MSNBC: Trump says bill won’t be coming back in near future & he’ll see if the Dems want to work with him on healthcare.
