b-b-but "Mermaids aka Torment" is the song written by Smith and Severin and then recorded by Marc Almond on his Mambas album? August, please come soon!

Marco Damiani (Marco D.), Friday, 5 May 2006 05:44 (eighteen years ago) link

I fear, Marco, that we must suffer!

Ned Raggett (Ned), Friday, 5 May 2006 05:45 (eighteen years ago) link

hmm, trying to answer own question - Severin's MP3.com album had a track called Tormented, which could be the instrumental of:
And All Around The Mermaids Sang (AKA Torment) (Robert Smith Vocal)

kit brash (kit brash), Friday, 5 May 2006 06:37 (eighteen years ago) link

this just adds to the mystery. The 83/84 era is one of my favourites: druggy, unfocused and way out of control. Sometimes excess can be good.

Marco Damiani (Marco D.), Friday, 5 May 2006 08:27 (eighteen years ago) link

Yep, I have to say that over the years, that phase is the one I find most interesting. The range of the stuff coming out at that time, from Shake Dog Shake, Throw your foot or New Day, is pretty crazy.

Oh boy, can't wait!

i never really gave the top a chance.

fortunate hazel (f. hazel), Saturday, 6 May 2006 06:13 (eighteen years ago) link

You should, it's one of their best.

LeRooLeRoo (Seb), Saturday, 6 May 2006 19:56 (eighteen years ago) link

Meantime, there's also the Siouxsie Nocturne DVD, with some fun bonuses:

"You have got to check out the Siouxsie & The Banshees Nocturne DVD. Not only does it have the original live concert with Robert, but two TV
appearances with Mr. Smith as well. Plus one of the Bonus features is a BBC TV Special that i'd probably only read about, but had never seen.
It is basically filmed LSD. Robert, Sioux, Budgie, and Severin all dressed as Alice visit Wonderland (also the name of the Banshees record label). While in Wonderland, Robert gets interrogated by surreal clowns, then there's a segway into a Creatures' video, then a Glove performance (!!) of "A Blues In Drag", Sioux tells a story, and more bizarro mini-films. It just has to be seen - a must for any Cure fan."

Ned Raggett (Ned), Monday, 15 May 2006 21:41 (eighteen years ago) link

Darn. I was hoping my copy of the DVD would be in my mailbox today! Can't wait to finally see ALL of this (never having seen "Nocturne" even back in my obsesso-goff days).

Zora (Zora), Wednesday, 17 May 2006 20:13 (eighteen years ago) link

yeah! i like the bauhaus and nirvana ripoffs better than the animal collective ripoffs.

Tracey Hand (tracerhand), Wednesday, 17 May 2006 20:33 (eighteen years ago) link

Hahahah.

Anyway, welcome to the cult. And yes, it IS a good album, is it not?

Ned Raggett (Ned), Wednesday, 17 May 2006 20:37 (eighteen years ago) link

yeah, i mean the bass on track 2 (i think) alone has shot to the top of my list of reasons why brian jones should have tried staying alive a little longer, just so that he could hear it!

Christopher Costello (CGC), Thursday, 18 May 2006 01:57 (eighteen years ago) link

Ok. this "nocturne" DVD is effing remarkable. I'm ecstatic!!

Jay Vee's Return (Manon_69), Thursday, 18 May 2006 03:33 (eighteen years ago) link

a BBC TV Special that i'd probably only read about, but had never seen.
It is basically filmed LSD.

Yes. Yes it is. And R. Smith seems to have ingested all of it. He seems
fairly zonked (and happy!) throughout all this. The "Clown Interrogation " segment is particularly funny/creepy/wtf? Also, Budgie recites a poem about a peccarie and assorted other surprises. Gotta recommend this one.

Also - R. Smith = remarkable fill-in (and not yet filled out) McGeoch in the live Banshees performances. And "Dear Prudence" still sucks.

Jay Vee's Return (Manon_69), Thursday, 18 May 2006 11:26 (eighteen years ago) link

The BBC special is that putrid "Play at Home" series - New Order did one where Tony Wilson was naked in a bathtub with Gillian. Great shot of RS almost passing out during the Glove's "Blues in Drag"

Does anyone know if this is different from the one that's been available on bootlegs for years?

LeRooLeRoo (Seb), Monday, 29 May 2006 20:57 (seventeen years ago) link

Isn't that one supposed to be from a Kid Jensen session?

kit brash (kit brash), Monday, 29 May 2006 21:12 (seventeen years ago) link

Yes it is, but I don't really know how they work. I thought maybe Robert could've brought his home demo to the radio show.

LeRooLeRoo (Seb), Monday, 29 May 2006 22:47 (seventeen years ago) link

I missed this news as I was away from the computer yesterday. Now that I am back, HOORAY! :-)

All them Top/Head on the Door demos = oh great happiness.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Tuesday, 30 May 2006 17:09 (seventeen years ago) link

I'm surprised there aren't any unreleased songs from the KMKMKM sessions. They really stuffed that album, it seems...

Baaderonixx rides the neon lights (baaderonixx), Tuesday, 30 May 2006 17:31 (seventeen years ago) link

Well there was "To The Sky", but for some reason they put it on the B-Sides collection.

LeRooLeRoo (Seb), Tuesday, 30 May 2006 20:32 (seventeen years ago) link

Anyway, um, Dan to thread revival...? Yes?

JAPANESE WHISPERS AND...
5/30/2006 6:16:24 PM - by CURE:ROBERT

STUFF

JAPANESE WHISPERS IS DELETED
AS THERE SEEMED LITTLE POINT IN REMASTERING AN ALBUM THAT WASNT REALLY AN ALBUM ANYWAY
AND (AS HAS ALREADY BEEN POINTED OUT) ALL THE JW SONGS ARE AVAILABLE AS REMASTERS ON THE GREATEST HITS AND JOIN THE DOTS

AND 'OTHER' KMKMKM SONGS...

THIS WAS A DIFFICULT EXTRAS CD TO COMPILE
AS THERE WERE REALLY TWO...
ONE WITH 18 UNRELEASED AND B-SIDE INSTRUMENTAL DEMOS
AND THE DEMOS/OUT-TAKES/LIVE ONE THAT IS TO BE RELEASED

ON BALANCE I (AND THOSE I PLAYED BOTH TO) FELT THAT THE DEMOS/OUT-TAKES/LIVE ONE WAS JUST MORE INTERESTING AS AN EXTRA WITH THE KMKMKM ALBUM...

MAYBE THE OTHER ONE WILL LEAK OUT SOMETIME...

ANYWAY...
THESE NEXT REMASTERS REALLY DO SOUND FAB... PARTICULARLY THE TOP!
RSX

AND (AS HAS ALSO ALREADY BEEN POINTED OUT)
NOW ALL THE CURIOSITY TRACKS WILL BE AVAILABLE
AND
THERE WILL BE AN 'ALL THE SINGLES' COLLECTION NEXT YEAR - WITH STARING AT THE SEA TYPE LINKS INBETWEEN
AND
THERE WILL BE A LIVE DVD BOXSET
WITH ORANGE
AND SHOW
AND JAPAN(?)
AND
AND
OTHER SURPRISE STUFF

AND
A PRAYER TOUR SHOW?
HMMMM...
IF I CAN FIND THE FOOTAGE!

ONWARDS...

Baaderonixx rides the neon lights (baaderonixx), Wednesday, 31 May 2006 06:53 (seventeen years ago) link

how to not fuck up the "all the singles" collection: make it only non-LP singles, or singles that were drastically re-recorded or remixed (cf Close To Me) for their single release. I'll allow the 12" of Fascination Street.

kit brash (kit brash), Wednesday, 31 May 2006 08:02 (seventeen years ago) link

(thinks: which gives us what?)

Killing An Arab
Charlotte Sometimes
Let's Go To Bed
The Love Cats
The Walk
Close To Me (single version)
Never Enough (7" version)
Wrong Number
Cut Here
Just Say Yes

is anything else legitimately different enough to count as a new version? I'd save the 1990 Close To Me for a big remix compilation (urgent & key! except stick all the Wild Mood Swings versions on a WMS bonus disc.) did I forget any?

kit brash (kit brash), Wednesday, 31 May 2006 10:27 (seventeen years ago) link

The implication of the 'all the singles' thing is that it's a DVD, not a CD.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Wednesday, 31 May 2006 11:31 (seventeen years ago) link

yes, the mention of 'Staring at the sea' links indicate that we're talking videos here. What's this Japan thing he mentions? The Top-era gig that's been widely bootlegged?
I must say the prospect of a DVD box set with 3-4 shows is very exciting.

Baaderonixx immer wieder (baaderonixx), Wednesday, 31 May 2006 12:00 (seventeen years ago) link

Oh, fucking joy! Now, do we have an actual release date yet for the August batch? (And I must confess that what I'm waiting for the mostmostmost is the Disintegration remaster...) RS makes my still-16-year-old heart swell with luuuuurve.

Heheheh.

Anyway, to say it again, DAN TO THREAD.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Wednesday, 31 May 2006 15:20 (seventeen years ago) link

Dan's grown up, he doesn't care about Top demos and quadruple-dvd sets anymore...

Baaderonixx immer wieder (baaderonixx), Wednesday, 31 May 2006 15:22 (seventeen years ago) link

"Japanese Whispers" will be part of the re-releases in July, which means "Let's Go To Bed", "The Lovecats" and "The Walk" will all be part of an album.

Geir Hongro (GeirHong), Wednesday, 31 May 2006 15:25 (seventeen years ago) link

Wow, deluxe remasters of Blue Sunshine and The Top in the same month??! YESSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSS!

You guys just made my day.

rentboy (rentboy), Wednesday, 31 May 2006 15:25 (seventeen years ago) link

Uh, Geir, you might actually want to READ the thread revivals first.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Wednesday, 31 May 2006 15:26 (seventeen years ago) link

Please, pardon me if this has been discussed before. I tried reading a bit, and I just gave it up due to the length of this thread.

On the Seventeen Seconds remaster on Rhino (I just bought it recently!), has anyone experienced a glitch in the song toward the end of "M" (at 2:22)? I don't recall hearing it on the original Fiction, A&M or Elektra pressings, so I am wondering if the source tapes are bad now, if the remastering had errors or if Rhino made a bad batch.

Input appreciated! Thanks!!!

Highly anticipating the next batch of reissues! Believe it or not, the Sire tape of The Top was my first foray into Smith & Co., so The Top holds a special place in my once-13 year old heart, even if it is the most rubbish of the early albums.

Johnny Strangler, Wednesday, 31 May 2006 18:25 (seventeen years ago) link

even if it is the most rubbish of the early albums

i strongly disagree. i'd take The Top over Faith or Seventeen Seconds any ol' day

rentboy (rentboy), Wednesday, 31 May 2006 18:28 (seventeen years ago) link

Heh, I probably should have said "the most rubbish of the early albums according to most Cure fans". I love that record! I have no idea why, because they are so absurd, but "Birdmad Girl" and "Dressing Up" are just fantastic!

Johnny Strangler, Wednesday, 31 May 2006 18:31 (seventeen years ago) link

There are only so many variations of "GUH ME WANT" I can post, guys!

Dan (Really) Perry (Dan Perry), Wednesday, 31 May 2006 18:33 (seventeen years ago) link

As far as reissuing hits, WEA takes the cake for The Smiths. Singles, Best 1, Best 2, Best 1&2 box, The Best Of, blah blah blah. At least The World WOn't Listen and Hatful of Hollow had some merit when they came out. WEA needs to remaster the scant few proper albums that The Smiths released. 4 albums, 1 band with a ravenous following...seems simple to me.

The Dinosaur Jr. reissues on Merge are lame, too. Extra tracks/demos just have to be floating around. Instead we get lame fucking videos that you can watch on VH1's The Alternative.

While rubbish like Fleetwood Mac and Yes get the grand reissue treatment, classics are left w/ poor audio fidelity:

The Pretenders - The Pretenders
New Order - all back catalogue
Gang Of Four - Songs Of The Free (deleted in UK as well I believe)

These are all WEA-related albums (GOF was WEA in US), so why can't Rhino reissue these instead of the hated Mac and Yes?

Johnny Strangler, Wednesday, 31 May 2006 18:49 (seventeen years ago) link

Er, sorry, the previous entry should have gone to the Worst Reissues thread. Apologies...
