Breaking: Doe now requires employees to substitute the phrase "radical Islamic terrorism" for "climate change", thus hastening the fall of ISIS.

Making America Great, a nonprofit run by Rebekah Mercer, one of Trump’s most influential donors, will begin airing $1 million in television ads on Wednesday, coupled with a $300,000 digital advertising campaign. The TV ads will run in the District of Columbia, along with ten states Trump carried in the presidential election where a Democratic senator is up for re-election in 2018: West Virginia, Wisconsin, Missouri, Michigan, North Dakota, Florida, Ohio, Indiana, Montana and Pennsylvania. The digital campaign also will focus on voters in those states.

Ambling Shambling Man (Old Lunch), Wednesday, 29 March 2017 22:49 (seven years ago) link

I'm still struck by a talk that was given at NUIG a couple of years after the millenium by a speaker who I think had been an ambassador to somewhere in the region of Korea. He was saying that having seen the level of technology the country posessed at the time a nuclear missile would probably be cobbled together by hand in the same way that the russian truck clones that proliferated in the country were.
Technology seemed to be stuck at a point at least 50 years behind everywhere else, probably much more.

I saw the footage from the North Korean 2015 flyover celebrating the 70th anniversary of the end of WWII on tv today where the flyover was by biplanes spelling out 70 and was reminded of that

Ned Raggett, Wednesday, 29 March 2017 23:09 (seven years ago) link

would love for Trump to comment on that, it'd feel something like

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Vey7GKNpl4Q

Neanderthal, Wednesday, 29 March 2017 23:12 (seven years ago) link

Given the timing of the idea, I'm sure it could have reasonably dismissed as overreacting since hey, we all knew Trump had no chance, the Russians can't really fuck with the vote count, etc.

The administration's post-election decision to unload on Russia (GRIZZLY STEPPE!!!!) etc seems even more pathetic if that story is true

Not the real Tombot (El Tomboto), Wednesday, 29 March 2017 23:22 (seven years ago) link

yeah everybody was preoccupied with not giving Trump an excuse to say the election was "rigged" which that would have played into natch

Neanderthal, Wednesday, 29 March 2017 23:24 (seven years ago) link

For many reasons I hope this is accurate:

http://nymag.com/daily/intelligencer/2017/03/what-george-w-bush-really-thought-of-trumps-inauguration.html

Bush’s endearing struggle with his poncho at the event quickly became a meme, prompting many Democrats on social media to admit that they already pined for the relative normalcy of his administration. Following Trump’s short and dire speech, Bush departed the scene and never offered public comment on the ceremony.

But, according to three people who were present, Bush gave a brief assessment of Trump’s inaugural after leaving the dais: “That was some weird shit.” All three heard him say it.

I'm reading Perlstein's Goldwater book atm, and the circumstances leading up to his nomination in '64 are so goddamn eerily familiar. There are long passages where you could swap out a few names and he'd be talking about 2016.

I don't know that I could stand it, either, but it's probably important for at least some of us to stare into the deplorable sun and report back about what we saw before our eye sockets were reduced to smoking craters.

Ambling Shambling Man (Old Lunch), Thursday, 30 March 2017 13:25 (seven years ago) link

its tough but every time Trump punts on one of what I assume are their signature issues (for example weed legalization, or this) I always get the temptation to see how they're taking it. thus far it seems to be "actually, internet privacy is bad"

frogbs, Thursday, 30 March 2017 13:25 (seven years ago) link

Rather bold of them in particular.

Ned Raggett, Thursday, 30 March 2017 13:29 (seven years ago) link

frogbs I've also tried to go there when I was curious about how their universe is interpreting X, but after going there this morning... I'm having trouble seeing anything besides culty praise and desperate protection of their narrative. I wouldn't know where to look to find evidence of identity crisis, especially since I think they've removed the ability to sort by controversial (shocking).

It's like holding my breath as I sift through rancid garbage attempting to find spare change that may not even be there.

Evan, Thursday, 30 March 2017 13:49 (seven years ago) link

they all seem to think Trump is going to veto it. cuz he'd never sell out like that.

frogbs, Thursday, 30 March 2017 14:07 (seven years ago) link

oh goody!

President Trump effectively declared war Thursday on the House Freedom Caucus, the powerful group of hard-line conservative Republicans who blocked the health-care bill, vowing to “fight them” in the 2018 midterm elections.

In a morning tweet, Trump warned that the Freedom Caucus would “hurt the entire Republican agenda if they don't get on the team, & fast." He grouped its members, all of them Republican, with Democrats in calling for their political defeat — an extraordinary incitement of intraparty combat from a sitting president.

But it does indicate that Trump has learned a lesson about the importance of party unity - he's not going to go after the FC caucus guys - he actually managed to reign in his ego in an act of self-preservation, which is unusual.

Just a reminder that 'reigning in his ego' is not a thing he does.
