scads of legit stories per page there, with a convincing time line. i'm of the opinion though that donald trump is innocent, and anyone who thinks otherwise has bad taste

"Lol" at Ivanka being given a WH staff position. What a country.

Granted, consider the source (in this case ultimately Newsweek). Still, huh.

as O said to Yam after his inaugural address, "Good job."

He totally should've flipped him the double bird and said 'eat this shit, bitch!' and then launched into some wild air guitar.

yes i know Structural Monsters like POTUSes don't do that, OL, but thx for being 'grown up'

we'll see what happens when Pence gets sworn in

it's all in the delivery tho, could be obama said 'good job' while making the gas face and giving a thumbs-down

I'm reading Perlstein's Goldwater book atm, and the circumstances leading up to his nomination in '64 are so goddamn eerily familiar. There are long passages where you could swap out a few names and he'd be talking about 2016.

Ambling Shambling Man (Old Lunch), Thursday, 30 March 2017 12:56 (seven years ago) link

can't believe we haven't heard more about this 'good job' scandal

I'm finding the excellent Invisible Bridge hard work for similar reasons, too many depressing parallels

watching The_Donald have an identity crisis over this internet privacy thing has been pretty entertaining tbh

frogbs, Thursday, 30 March 2017 13:07 (seven years ago) link

how can you stand to even look at that ridiculous sub?

(•̪●) (carne asada), Thursday, 30 March 2017 13:18 (seven years ago) link

I don't know that I could stand it, either, but it's probably important for at least some of us to stare into the deplorable sun and report back about what we saw before our eye sockets were reduced to smoking craters.

Ambling Shambling Man (Old Lunch), Thursday, 30 March 2017 13:25 (seven years ago) link

its tough but every time Trump punts on one of what I assume are their signature issues (for example weed legalization, or this) I always get the temptation to see how they're taking it. thus far it seems to be "actually, internet privacy is bad"

frogbs, Thursday, 30 March 2017 13:25 (seven years ago) link

Rather bold of them in particular.

Ned Raggett, Thursday, 30 March 2017 13:27 (seven years ago) link

Trumpists would denounce breathing if their leader wrote an anti-respiration EO.

Ambling Shambling Man (Old Lunch), Thursday, 30 March 2017 13:27 (seven years ago) link

Ah, so you're saying we should encourage him.

Ned Raggett, Thursday, 30 March 2017 13:29 (seven years ago) link

frogbs I've also tried to go there when I was curious about how their universe is interpreting X, but after going there this morning... I'm having trouble seeing anything besides culty praise and desperate protection of their narrative. I wouldn't know where to look to find evidence of identity crisis, especially since I think they've removed the ability to sort by controversial (shocking).

It's like holding my breath as I sift through rancid garbage attempting to find spare change that may not even be there.

Evan, Thursday, 30 March 2017 13:49 (seven years ago) link

they all seem to think Trump is going to veto it. cuz he'd never sell out like that.

frogbs, Thursday, 30 March 2017 14:07 (seven years ago) link

oh goody!

President Trump effectively declared war Thursday on the House Freedom Caucus, the powerful group of hard-line conservative Republicans who blocked the health-care bill, vowing to “fight them” in the 2018 midterm elections.

In a morning tweet, Trump warned that the Freedom Caucus would “hurt the entire Republican agenda if they don't get on the team, & fast." He grouped its members, all of them Republican, with Democrats in calling for their political defeat — an extraordinary incitement of intraparty combat from a sitting president.

tony orlandoni, cheese engineer (bizarro gazzara), Thursday, 30 March 2017 14:13 (seven years ago) link

But it does indicate that Trump has learned a lesson about the importance of party unity - he's not going to go after the FC caucus guys - he actually managed to reign in his ego in an act of self-preservation, which is unusual.

Just a reminder that 'reigning in his ego' is not a thing he does.

Ambling Shambling Man (Old Lunch), Thursday, 30 March 2017 14:15 (seven years ago) link

it's a thing that he can do for a maximum of 1 week.

i feel like we haven't seen even a fraction of the petty vindictiveness that trump is capable of, so i'm psyched to see him raise his game against the freedom caucus (and against himself by extension)

tony orlandoni, cheese engineer (bizarro gazzara), Thursday, 30 March 2017 14:23 (seven years ago) link

To give you an idea of how much the Freedom Caucus are scared about this:

https://twitter.com/justinamash/status/847448570081005568

It didn't take long for the swamp to drain @realDonaldTrump. No shame, Mr. President. Almost everyone succumbs to the D.C. Establishment.

Ned Raggett, Thursday, 30 March 2017 14:25 (seven years ago) link

seems like this is a strong man attempt to get them to fall into line, but given that the FC already defected on healthcare it seems likely to be the case that they don't feel beholden to trump for future electoral success, so this seems like a pretty poor gamble but hey

art, Thursday, 30 March 2017 14:25 (seven years ago) link

Trump is a bully. A bully only has power when others fear him. Once his usual tactics fail, he's nothing but a bloviating half-filled ochre beanbag.

https://www.nytimes.com/2017/03/30/world/africa/trump-is-said-to-ease-combat-rules-in-somalia-designed-to-protect-civilians.html?_r=0

WASHINGTON — President Trump has relaxed some of the rules for preventing civilian casualties when the American military carries out counterterrorism strikes in Somalia, laying the groundwork for an escalating campaign against Islamist militants in the Horn of Africa.

The decision, according to officials familiar with internal deliberations, gives commanders at the United States Africa Command greater latitude to carry out offensive airstrikes and raids by ground troops against militants with the Qaeda-linked Islamist group Shabab. That sets the stage for an intensified pace of combat there, while increasing the risk that American forces could kill civilians.

from latest PPP poll (which has him at -13%)

We find that if evidence comes out that proves conclusively that members of Trump's campaign team worked in association with Russia to help him win the election, 53% of voters think he should resign to only 39% who believe he should continue to serve as President.

this fuckin country

Neanderthal, Thursday, 30 March 2017 14:59 (seven years ago) link

Campaign team vs. guy himself, FWIW.

Ned Raggett, Thursday, 30 March 2017 15:00 (seven years ago) link

right, but I mean even though it's an abstract question where voters bring their own presumptions, I would presume if it was found conclusively that his team worked with Russia, there would probably also be evidence corroborating the suspicion that the WH has tried to obfuscate the investigation. for Nixon it was the coverup (and the coverup of the coverup)

Neanderthal, Thursday, 30 March 2017 15:02 (seven years ago) link

esp since any time whispers came out about Russia, Trump insisted his people were 'clean'
