84% of republicans approve of the job trump is doing.

-14 on Rasmussen now (his lowest approval there yet)

the interesting bit there is that strongly approve is actually up from where it was early in the week but strongly disapprove jumped 3 points to 47%

Neanderthal, Friday, 31 March 2017 14:13 (seven years ago) link

Trump won't fall below 70% with Republicans unless he fails to pass any key Republican hot button reforms, and even then will get a pass from his base who will blame Congress.

but by then he'll be in single digits with independents and Democrats.

Who?
Michael Ellis.
I see.
Do you know him, sir?
Er ... Michael Ellis. Michael Ellis...
You don't.
Well, I don't remember the name.
I think you would remember him, sir.
Why do you say that?
Well, would you remember a man six foot nine inches high, fortyish, and he's got a long scar from here to here and absolutely no nose?
... oh, I think I do remember somebody like that...
Well, that's not Michael Ellis.

Supercreditor (Dr Morbius), Friday, 31 March 2017 14:28 (seven years ago) link

See, I'm glad someone went there. (I was biting down hard not to link a YT clip of that yesterday.)

yeah, he would have to fail to pass the tax reform and a whole slew of other promises too.

his ratings took a hit because of ACA try #1, a few more failures and he might actually go below 70

Neanderthal, Friday, 31 March 2017 14:34 (seven years ago) link

The right way to think about this is, how bad do the Yankees have to be before their fans start siding with the Red Sox.

(I live in a very red state, and so much of the affiliation is strictly tribal. They may or may not "approve" of the president, but if somebody asks them, a lot of them are going to understand it as a loyalty test and default to "yes.")

yeah, to some of them the answer is "well he's better than Hillary would have been so..."

Neanderthal, Friday, 31 March 2017 14:45 (seven years ago) link

Turns out Michael Ellis won on Jeopardy! once:

Anyway, word spreading that another WH deputy chief of staff, Rick Dearborn, has been fired/pushed out/etc

Ned Raggett, Friday, 31 March 2017 14:53 (seven years ago) link

Haberman on Dearborn:

Dearborn being blamed by Priebus allies over AHCA...Dearborn link to Sessions, for whom he worked but who dimmed in Trump's eyes over Russia probe recusal, has not helped him.

Also, here's a roffle:

https://secure.politico.com/story/2017/03/politico-playbook-donald-trump-freedom-caucus-236740

People are buzzing about whether PRESIDENT DONALD TRUMP and/or VP MIKE PENCE will escalate the war with the conservative House Freedom Caucus by stumping in their districts, according to people familiar with the developing plans.

This was clear all along. And it should probably also be clear who the 'overeager journalists' are.

Donald J. Trump @realDonaldTrump

"Mike Flynn should ask for immunity in that this is a witch hunt (excuse for big election loss), by media & Dems, of historic proportion!"

Is Trump going to start taking credit for starting the HUGEST witch hunt?

I vaguely checked Twitter and right, left, doesn't matter, I'm seeing absolute incredulity and mockery of Spicer across the board for today. My favorite comment I stumbled across was from John Podhoretz of all people -- 'like watching a bad magician.'

Ned Raggett, Friday, 31 March 2017 19:22 (seven years ago) link

is there a good spicer clip to watch. or do i have to watch the whole thing?

scott seward, Friday, 31 March 2017 20:01 (seven years ago) link

you can watch any press briefing he's done really they are all bad

marcos, Friday, 31 March 2017 20:04 (seven years ago) link

press getting a little less patient this week though

marcos, Friday, 31 March 2017 20:04 (seven years ago) link

just watch a few minutes from today's for example

marcos, Friday, 31 March 2017 20:04 (seven years ago) link

i've watched them before i just didn't know if there was some head-shaking moment like the other day.

scott seward, Friday, 31 March 2017 20:06 (seven years ago) link

Spicer is like the personification of the weakness and fear inside of Trump.

scott seward, Friday, 31 March 2017 20:08 (seven years ago) link

they are funny, the press are fairly generous in their questions, earnestly trying to spin out something cohesive from trump's random bullshit claims, but spicer acts all incredulous and annoyed that they don't think trump's claims are self-explanatory

marcos, Friday, 31 March 2017 20:12 (seven years ago) link

that stop shaking your head moment from the other day, and the russian salad dressing remark, were peak-level bad even for Spicer

after @MajorCBS asks about Flynn, Trump leaves signing ceremony without signing executive orders. Pence went and picked it up from desk

from an anonymous soul on another forum, I'm choosing "the guy in the zombie movie trying to hide that he was bitten an hour ago"

though that JPod line made me think of Patton Oswalt's "angry magician" bit and I'm seeing a commonality there too. "Okay? OKAY?! Okay."

If Democrats can secure five more votes to deny Gorsuch the 60 votes he needs to advance, Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell (R-Ky.) is likely to gut the supermajority requirement on Supreme Court nominees using the “nuclear option.”

Is this true though? It's 'nuclear' not just so much because it's a Big Thing to do, but because it's mutually assured destruction. No one's ever had the huevos to do this before, I'm not sure Repubs staring down the barrel of a historically unpopular president heading into 2018 (and then 2020) want to be handing the Democrats fast-track powers

long-term planning, a thing the GOP is good at

Οὖτις, Friday, 31 March 2017 21:43 (seven years ago) link

they will totally do it, this is their only hope of altering the balance of the Court for a generation, and the only victory they will be able to claim for this legislative session.

Οὖτις, Friday, 31 March 2017 21:43 (seven years ago) link

Will there ever be another SC justice confirmed when different parties control the Senate and Executive, or did the Garland blockade end that?

Moodles, Friday, 31 March 2017 21:53 (seven years ago) link

yeah Garland blockade was basically the nail in that coffin

Οὖτις, Friday, 31 March 2017 21:58 (seven years ago) link

worth noting that the nominees prior to that were increasingly getting approved along strict party lines tho
