Oh, I forgot to say, my current favorite is a Carribean/South American place called Tropix in Oakland. A big deck out the back, AMAZING cornbread, Brazilian beer, jerk chicken and curry and crabcakes...fucking great.

*anyone know of a *good* - and i mean really proper, decent mexican place in london*

You need Café Pacifico (Langley St, Covent Garden) in your life!

Mog, Thursday, 9 June 2005 09:47 (eighteen years ago) link

NB my favourite central London restaurants are:

Kulu Kulu, Brewer St (sushi)
Mela, Shaftesbury Ave (Indian)
Café Pacifico (Mexican)

and I would love to be able to eat at Claridge's every day.

ten months pass...
Well we just back from Cay Tre 301 Old Street. Found out that they were outstanding. For a experience of 5 years living in Vietnam, I can tell this one offer the most authentic so far as their menu only has 10% chinese stuff like aromatic duck etc..., The most difficult Vietnamese dish to cook is "Pho", everyone can cook it but just a few make it nice, Cay Tre does it. Viet Hoa and Khoai seem like just half way, they cover the menu by many chinese dish which you can easily find in a Soho restaurant menu.
For the dodgy big spring roll Cay tre does, I can tell you why. Spring roll is differently made through the length of Vietnam. Hanoi Spring Rolls are big, double the size and slightly different with the Saigon version. Cay tre chef must be a guy from Vietname Capitol, Hanoi, as when you go through the menu, you can find most of the dishes are Northen Vietnam, from Hanoi.

tarbucndge, Sunday, 23 April 2006 14:23 (eighteen years ago) link

OK but the spring rolls made by the chefs that moved to Minnesota were more massive than even Cay Tre's but a million times nicer - and had pork, prawn, bean thread, onion, carrot and spices in them. Minnesota also has a lot of Hmongs amongst its recent Vietnamese immigrants. Is this a coincidence?

We've been raving about Cay Tre for a few years now.

on the not-cheap-but-not-ourageous tip, my favorite restaurant of the moment is BARBUTO in NYC's far west village. small menu of nontrad Italian-ish dishes: interesting salads*, hearty pastas, a beautiful half roast chicken swimming in herbal green sauce. wine list isn't too daunting though I tend towards martinis, they know how to make 'em. the space itself is a former garage on Washington St, go later this spring or summer when they open up the sides.

*the salad w/squid & black chick peas is nice but ask for the unctious alioli dressing on the side if youre squeamish about richness like me.

I wuv Raeburns in Paisley. Been going there regularly since it opened, and have never had a less than excellent meal yet. Friendly staff, fresh local ingredients, cracking house wines, imaginative menus, unstuffy, unpretentious, unhassled. Would recommend it to anyone.

Just tried Viet Grill in Kingsland Rd. Definitily this is 2nd branch of Cay Tre. Their Feudal Roast Beef and Honeyed quail with lotus seed broth are fabulous. I've never tried it in any Vietnamese restaurant.
Tips: Go to Cay tre first, ask for Viet Grill. They the will give you a discount card. Bring it to Viet Grill and you'll have 10% off the bill. Found it out last week, when I was waiting for a table at Cay tre.

ooh, maybe you can help me. i used to go to this vietnamese place in chicago and my favorite dish there was this kind of beef spring roll. ive mentioned it a couple times on ilx. but anyways, its the kind wrapped in the fresh ricepaper, and has strips of grilled beef, but its a deep red color and has peanuts on it. its fully cooked, but its dark red - not sure how. and then there's strips of carrots, bean sprouts, cilantro, lettuce in it - and you dip it in a spicy fish oil sauce thing. oh god it was good. do you know what this is called in vietnamese? i'd find out from the restaurnat, but they closed down.

We came across possibly the best restraunt in the country, surprisingly enough in Biloxi, Mississippi. According to the head chef, despite it being local, this little place has served billions and billions of people. The menu is strictly "Americana," which suited us just fine because we had our fill of Tibetan cuisine while traveling through Kansas. They served beef, chicken, and fish entrees. No lamb. Thank God! A favorite among us was one of the beef dishes that consisted of approximately a quarter of a pound of sirloin, chopped and pattied, resting in a freshly made, still warm to the touch, sesame seed roll. Another dish that was a big hit with us, also a beef dish, was similar in style, but what put this one over the edge was its "special sauce." (Don't bother asking the head chef for the recipe. His secret stays in-house.) A side of their homemade potato wedges, which they personally salt for you, and an old-style, all-American soda pop complete this dining nirvana. From the get-go the waitron was eager to push the "just like mom used to make" apple pie, which comes in an adorable cardboard sleeve. And to top it all off, they have a ball pit, a slide, and a friendly clown. What more could we ask for?

for me, it's still Matagali on Elm here in Toronto. their vegetable pakoras, basmati, lamb vindaloo, sweet, sweet butter chicken and oven-hot naan bread is probably the best meal ever.

favorite restaurant of the moment: the lebanese-armenian carousel in glendale. go with friends, skip the entrees, and just basically order everything on the mezze menu.
