Liam gave an early interview after a plane incident once in which he explained that he was after a bit of crumpet cos he saw someone else get a bit of crumpet and it looked well tasty that and in his impatience to have some of the tasty crumpet somehow or another air rage happened to the hostess and something about the knowing, leering relish with which he utters the words crumpet and tasty has stuck with me not just in the sounds (which now that i have related thusly will fire around in my head for days most probably) but in a deeply associated pair of sensory flashes viz i) an image of peter cook at his most flaunty flabby dropjawed self-indulgence and ii) the imagined taste in my mouth which i can only describe as seventies pub carpet

In general, I don't give a shit about this guy, or his brother, or Blur, or any of it. But part of me really wants this album's first-week sales to be in the low triple digits. Just so maybe the music journalism world will move on, the way the music listening world has.

three weeks pass...

Tremble, ye mighty:

Liam Gallagher has announced the title of his debut solo single ‘Wall of Glass’ which is now available to pre-order from https://wbr.ec/wallofglass_itunes. ‘Wall Of Glass’ is the first track to preview his forthcoming album ‘As You Were’.

If you had to make an equation of all the elements that made the early Oasis singles so apocalyptically good – huge waves of guitar hooks, a melody you can’t shake, a thunderous rhythm and Liam Gallagher’s voice delivering an unbelievably catchy chorus - then ‘Wall Of Glass’ would be the result. Boosted by a contemporary, bass-heavy production, it’s a track that provides a fresh new angle to Liam’s sound while maintaining the traits that made him such an influential artist.

With undeniable power and a yearning menace, it’s hard to recall a time that Liam has sung better – it’s like hearing him for the first time.

(This said his O2 Ritz show next week in Manchester will have all profits going to the We Love Manchester Emergency Fund, so good on him for that.)

Ned Raggett, Friday, 26 May 2017 12:57 (six years ago) link

Can menace be "yearning"?

Ned Raggett, Wednesday, 31 May 2017 12:57 (six years ago) link

eheh, an ILX cover album would be fun if - for once - the idea was to make an album that could really be an alternate version of the real album, not just the titles or the lenghts.
chances are the ILX version would be much better than the original !
