Yeah I never really got death metal for years, now I can't get enough of it, and you've probably nailed a pretty big reason why.

note that i didn't make these tags, and no fucking way would i call absolute zero "thrash metal" for instance

whatever The Locust was. grindcore right?
― flappy bird, Tuesday, 2 May 2017 17:27 (seven years ago) link
death > black > thrash > grind > metalcore but I got some love for the best of em all
― a serious and fascinating fartist (Simon H.), Tuesday, 2 May 2017 17:31 (seven years ago) link
as far as amount of interesting stuff to be found aka variation within genre, I'd go with:
death > black > thrash > grind > don't listen to enough metalcore to know, but I suspsect I'd put it last anyway
― Dominique, Tuesday, 2 May 2017 17:32 (seven years ago) link
Black probably, then a tie between thrash and Grind. I like some death and very little metalcore.
― husked, tonal wails (irrational), Tuesday, 2 May 2017 17:41 (seven years ago) link
Oh, I like the Locust, if that counts as grindcore.

By "metalcore" are people thinking of Botch, Bloodlet etc or Killswitch Engage and stuff?
― ultros ultros-ghali, Tuesday, 2 May 2017 17:44 (seven years ago) link
the genre contains both
― ToddBonzalez (BradNelson), Tuesday, 2 May 2017 17:54 (seven years ago) link
when i said upthread that i like good metalcore the most out of any of these genres, i was def thinking of botch, converge, etc.
― ToddBonzalez (BradNelson), Tuesday, 2 May 2017 17:56 (seven years ago) link
death metal - better musicians, better composition, better repeat value
― People like Malcolm X, Martin Luther King, Jr, and (Joan Crawford Loves Chachi), Tuesday, 2 May 2017 18:07 (seven years ago) link
on the thrash tip, I really love the good old heavy progressive thrash bands (Sadist, Voivod) but most thrash records exhaust themselves by the third or fourth track for me otherwise.
― People like Malcolm X, Martin Luther King, Jr, and (Joan Crawford Loves Chachi), Tuesday, 2 May 2017 18:09 (seven years ago) link
The Locust was kinda grind/screamo xover, iirc
― Guy Pidgeotto (Tom Violence), Tuesday, 2 May 2017 18:14 (seven years ago) link
Right now I favour black metal for the atmosphere and beauty but I haven't listened to enough death metal beyond Death, Carcass, Morbid Angel, Athiest, Cynic and Anata. I'm put off by a lot of the vocalists and conventions but I hope/suspect there's a lot more interesting variety out there.
― Robert Adam Gilmour, Tuesday, 2 May 2017 18:15 (seven years ago) link
i thought botch were post-hardcore
i like the last botch ep
almost want to be challopsy and write-in vote for power metal, which is frequently awful but is also frequently fun
― increasingly bonkers (rushomancy), Tuesday, 2 May 2017 18:18 (seven years ago) link
For me it's death > grind > metalcore (which includes deathcore 'cause I love Attila and Emmure) > thrash (mostly old stuff; new bands like Warbringer, Toxic Holocaust, et al. do nothing for me). I delete black metal promos unheard.

1. Black Metal - Love lots of it from the '90s onwards, still producing cool and surprising music2. Thrash - There's some classic stuff there but not a fan of anything past the '80s really3. Metalcore - Not big into it but I've got time for Botch and Converge4. Death Metal - Some bands I like in small doses, not keen on the vocals though plus it's all a bit too... knotty5. Grindcore - Not for me at all

death for me. My favorite as a kid, and the only subgenre of metal I still listen to on purpose
― Wimmels, Tuesday, 2 May 2017 20:42 (seven years ago) link
I like some old metalcore I guess, if Botch and Bloodlet count.

black metal

death metal wins, next level extreme music
i don't really get black metal..
haven't heard much grindcore apart from some napalm death. eh.
metalcore... is converge metalcore? that band rules
― brimstead, Wednesday, 3 May 2017 00:13 (seven years ago) link
oh and thrash. thrash is good.
― brimstead, Wednesday, 3 May 2017 00:14 (seven years ago) link
metalcore is Converge and a bunch of shitty Converge ripoffs, correct me if I'm wrong
― Guy Pidgeotto (Tom Violence), Wednesday, 3 May 2017 01:08 (seven years ago) link
grindcore because it's over the quickest.
― EZ Snappin, Wednesday, 3 May 2017 01:10 (seven years ago) link
Death metal, then black, then probably a tie between grind and thrash. Not sure I know what metalcore is, but if it's stuff like Kvelertak, count me in.
― o. nate, Wednesday, 3 May 2017 02:58 (seven years ago) link
Attila and Emmure
I honestly thought "metalcore" mostly referred to stuff like this. Converge are not bad (but this still wouldn't change my answer).
― My Body's Made of Crushed Little Evening Stars (Sund4r), Wednesday, 3 May 2017 03:21 (seven years ago) link
Grind is also the closest to other genres I enjoy like free jazz, punk rock and noize

Oh hm, are you thinking of Painkiller as a grind offshoot/fusion?

sure

Metalcore is a relatively big tent if you include subgenres like Deathcore (Emmure, Attila, After The Burial, Slice The Cake, Whitechapel, etc) and Mathcore (Botch, Dillinger Escape Plan, etc).
― Siegbran, Wednesday, 3 May 2017 11:26 (seven years ago) link
other than the earliest DEP, and at least a respect for bands like Car Bomb and Psyopus, I find a lot of mathcore to be a bit on the spastic side for me (which is probably the point). What about stuff like Naked City? Probably too conceptual and self-conscious. anyway, I can handle straight crust/hardcore/powerviolence, but when they try to metal up their sound, I find myself wanting better riffs/coherent songs. but I can be schooled!
― Dominique, Wednesday, 3 May 2017 14:48 (seven years ago) link
Hot takes: Dillinger Escape Plan is hardcore, Naked City is jazz

Thrash or Death. Black is generally not toe-tapping enough for my tastes.

I expected this to be death for American patriots and euros voting black but chap just had to be different ;)

thrash then death
― Balðy Daudrs (contenderizer), Thursday, 1 June 2017 14:27 (six years ago) link
but that's heavily weighted by nostalgia. present listening = death then black, w/ maybe a little kimchi grind pile on the side.
