Since I’ve been covering the Giants, they’ve had a pitcher fall off a dirt bike, a pitcher miss the All-Star Game with flu-like symptoms, a pitcher busted for possession of marijuana, a pitcher detained for arguing at a Vegas airport, players with questionable work ethics, players who didn’t get along with members of the organization because they thought they were better than they actually were, players with salary complaints, and a player who scheduled surgery right in the middle of the postseason because, gee, why would he want to hang around the team in the middle of the postseason? I’m sure I’m missing a whole bunch, too.

They were all stories. They never contributed to a general sense of “What are the Giants doing, lol?”

When any of that happens to the Mets, though, it becomes a story that hurts the entire organization. That’s because of a perception that’s been created with the help of everyone from the owners to the star players, sure. That salt has already been added to the soup, and it’s not coming back out. The only thing to do is to make sure everyone remembers at all times that the Mets will always be held to a different, unfair standard. Live it. Internalize it. Have training sessions and orientations about it. Make sure the rookies know. Make sure Ted from sales knows.

he ranks 119th out of 234 qualifying class a hitters in OPS at .700 (which, tbf, is three spots higher than mickey moniak, last year's top draft pick)

but he's at least doing well enough to make you wonder what might have been, if not well enough to take playing time away from an actual prospect at a higher level. he's hitting 4.5x more grounders than fly balls, which does not play into his strength of being fucking huge, so maybe if his swing can be tweaked . . .

The Mets have signed reliever Neil Ramirez to a big league deal, per @Ken_Rosenthal. Ramirez was twice DFA'd this year, owns an 8.71 ERA.

Travis d’Arnaud, Steven Matz, and Seth Lugo all played for St. Lucie last night. Matz started the game and pitched three innings, striking out three batters and allowing one run. Lugo entered in relief of Matz, and went two and two thirds innings while only yielding one hit. d’Arnaud caught seven innings and went 2-for-4 at the plate.

In your Insider piece today you talk about how Harvey still has the stuff to be successful, but no longer generates swings and misses. Is it reasonable to think that Harvey is still less than %100? If the Mets’ injury prevention program wasn’t a dumpster fire, would he have been better served starting the year on the DL and pitching a full compliment of rehab starts?

Jeff Sullivan:
Well, that’s impossible for us to know and be any kind of certain. My hunch is that Harvey had his delivery kind of screwed up when he made that emergency start against Atlanta, but that’s just uninformed speculation.

I have yet to do a real Harvey deep dive. But it’s instantly clear that his O-Swing even from last year has dropped 10 percentage points. That’s a problem with his secondary stuff, and not his fastball.
…which then becomes a problem for his fastball, since hitters can look for it.
