If the ACT-UP film is anywhere near as good as Entre Le Murs/The Class then I'm very excited to see it.

Voted Kawase, just because that would be the funniest winner. Also, I like her films. Hoping for the Hong, though, which apparently Will Smith gave a standing ovation.

Then why don't you fuck off?

I feel like I explain this every year, but who wins what in Cannes pretty much defines what I'll get to see when in Copenhagen. Small cultural market = these things really, really matter.

Not a period film thread, but a pre-menstrual one maybe.

Coppola first woman in 56 years to win for Best Director. Another embarrassing fact.

Frederik B, Sunday, 28 May 2017 18:49 (six years ago) link

can't imagine too many women have won the screenplay award either, but better late than never

a serious and fascinating fartist (Simon H.), Sunday, 28 May 2017 19:19 (six years ago) link

I think Lynne Ramsay is number four, but the award hasn't been given out each year, and also the last time was Tatiana Niculescu Bran in 2012. So it's not quite the same.

The embarrassment is more the fact that women has won the Grand Prix a couple of times, and Andrea Arnold alone has three Jury Awards, so they definitely make film that the juries like, but somehow never get the directing award... That's a quite typical unconscious misogynistic bias thingy, where something a woman has done was very good, but it probably wasn't really her that did it, you know?

Frederik B, Sunday, 28 May 2017 19:48 (six years ago) link

that embarrassment exists throughout the entire film industry (maybe less so in Denmark?) and Cannes, like so many institutions at the top of the food chain, aren't willing to make any progress.

Van Horn Street, Sunday, 28 May 2017 19:52 (six years ago) link

and not only for directors. pretty much every role in the industry except hair stylist and make up is riddled with that sexist bias.

Van Horn Street, Sunday, 28 May 2017 19:54 (six years ago) link

Oh, it's especially awful in Denmark at the moment, unfortunately.

Frederik B, Sunday, 28 May 2017 19:56 (six years ago) link

So yeah, I agree. But Cannes is even more awful than they could be. Venice, Berlin, Locarno, they've at least given a few awards to women. Cannes just bumbles along, putting Sean Penn and Jacques Doillon in the main competition, then saying there is no room for women because they only choose the best of the best.

Frederik B, Sunday, 28 May 2017 19:58 (six years ago) link

Tragic how the 'but is she qualified?' argument is represented in all circumstances, in all industries.
