I just read the article about the Seaver trade in the Post ... if this happened today, would people see it differently? These days, if a team knows it can't contend this year or the next, they almost have to trade a star who's signed to a team friendly contract.

So I guess it's really about how Mets management treated their biggest ever star like shit, rather than the trade itself?

He was The Franchise. It would be like the O's trading Cal Jr in his prime during a down season.

He was in the last year of his contract, right?

Seaver signed a two year extension with a hometown discount instead of testing free agency. I guess you could point fingers at both sides there (Seaver for being naive, Mets management for taking advantage of him) but baseball fans as a whole were on the owners' side of the free agency issue, so Seaver was in a bad place, PR-wise, when his demands for a raise became public.

In the past decade, Johan Santana and Roy Halladay were franchise pitchers who were traded in their prime for players who never panned out. Of course they weren't inner circle HOF'ers like Seaver. But comparing these kinds of things across eras is (probably) pointless anyway -- every era needs to be considered within the context of its time.

I had forgotten most of the money details. It wasn't exactly a hometown discount -- the multimillion signings (Wayne Garland being the first, as the Post article says) began just after TS signed his 3-year deal.

I believe literally anyone other than Conforto should be on the trading block in the right deal (including Thor, assuming market return based on a full recovery). I just don’t think you get another run like 2015 out of team built around young pitching due to injury volatility. What say you?

Dave Cameron: You listen on anyone, but I don’t think tearing it down to the bones is the right call. I’d move the rentals and then take another shot next year.

Yeah, so much of the starting position players will be gone next year that it will feel like a new team already. As long as the pitching bounces back they should be in contention.
