Player Dies in Stabbing at Basketball Game

A 19-year-old basketball player from Queens was fatally stabbed with a broken-off table leg today after a fight broke out during a basketball tournament, the police said.

The player, Lloyd Newton, was stabbed in the back with a leg from the scorer’s table at the championship game of a Y.M.C.A.-sponsored tournament at the Niagara Falls Boys and Girls Club, the police in Niagara Falls said.

“An argument ensued about the score,” Capt. Louis Curcione said, adding that one of the teams “thought they were getting gypped.”

“A fight broke out between the players and about 40 fans in the stands,” he said. “In the course of the fight, one person was stabbed in the back.”

Mr. Newton was taken to the Niagara Falls Memorial Medical Center, where he was pronounced dead on arrival.

Brian C. Young, 16, of Niagara Falls, has been charged with second-degree murder. He was being held at the Niagara Falls jail pending his arraignment in city court today.

i dunno i'd be against a player i liked doing that to one i didn't like. dumb move. and isn't a bitchslap face-to-face, which would make that a suckerpunchslap

Whatever it was, it was damn funny. Tired of House cavorting around and prancing like a gazelle after every damn shot he makes, acting as if he just hit a game winner. He is even more annoying to watch play than Sasha "THE MACHINE" Vujajajajacic.

love that the celtics are at the point that their bench players are hatable

like clowns passing out candy wearing blindfolds (call all destroyer), Friday, 8 May 2009 03:57 (fifteen years ago) link

how dare eddie house react to hitting 3 3s in a row like jokim noah after finishing an uncontested dunk - he should be more in the derick rose emotional leadership mold - the celtics overall should take a page from the chicago bulls wildly disparate uncoordinated emotional energy playbook - that after all was one of the key components of last years championship run and their best player the notably subdued kevin garnett

ice cr?m, Friday, 8 May 2009 04:09 (fifteen years ago) link

wtf are you talking about

hope this helps (Granny Dainger), Friday, 8 May 2009 04:15 (fifteen years ago) link

how the celtics are awesome the bulls are dumb an u r wrong obv duh

ice cr?m, Friday, 8 May 2009 04:16 (fifteen years ago) link

house was reacting like that ON EVERY SHOT. like after the 1st one he made. in the 2nd quarter. but yeah, totally the same as joachim being pumped after stealing the ball, getting fouled and that fouling out the other team's star, and getting the lead in the 3rd OT of a must win game. great insight, mr cr?m.

hope this helps (Granny Dainger), Friday, 8 May 2009 04:16 (fifteen years ago) link

i mean i know people have to make huge rationalizations for rooting for a team of douchebags, but c'mon

hope this helps (Granny Dainger), Friday, 8 May 2009 04:18 (fifteen years ago) link

actually there's only a few d-bags on the c's, that was unfair

hope this helps (Granny Dainger), Friday, 8 May 2009 04:20 (fifteen years ago) link

i think even u through the haze of whatever psychological derangement u view the world can see that jokim noah acts like a spaz all the time and eddie house busted bulls ass in game 7 just like he did to orlando last nite - and u know he got excited cause he was killin fools wholl never know how deep this shit goes

ice cr?m, Friday, 8 May 2009 04:20 (fifteen years ago) link

Eddie House is that dude on the playground who starts beating his chest and slapping the ground after hitting an 5 foot uncontested jumper, after airballing his first five shots. I don't have a problem with the Celtics bench in general, I think Leon Powe is one of the most underrated guys out there and don't even hate Scalabrine as much as some of you guys, but House is one of the top 5 annoying players to watch in the NBA, no question.

Can't stop the dancing chickens (dyao), Friday, 8 May 2009 04:21 (fifteen years ago) link

i would be super bitter to hav to root for that shambles of a random franchise in chicago who only have a glimmer of hope due to some ridic ping pong action too

ice cr?m, Friday, 8 May 2009 04:23 (fifteen years ago) link

duh he's a spaz but that doesn't mean i can't think house is annoying as fuck. i think even through the smug condescending knowitall fuckery you view the world through you can still see that

hope this helps (Granny Dainger), Friday, 8 May 2009 04:24 (fifteen years ago) link

ok bye bye poopoo pants

maybe we can get mchale to give us a sweetheart reacharound deal too

complaining abt condescension is never a good look fyi - just makes u look whiny

Also to be fair KG has been somewhat of a douche after winning the chip; who goes around clapping their hands at a guy who's a full foot shorter than you. Why don't you try doing that to the guy you're supposed to guard, who's actually your height and could lay you out on the floor for pulling that bush league stunt.

a short guy with a lot of power (Clay), Friday, 8 May 2009 04:29 (fifteen years ago) link

there is a method to this, guys. when eddie starts raining 3s on fools the home crowd gets pumped up (because if he makes one there's a good chance he's going to make 4 or 5), so eddie gets pumped up, which pumps them up even more. nothing like the other team having to blow a timeout because an undersized backup 2-guard with a weird-looking shot is shaking the rafters of his home court.

Yeah sure KG was always like that, but something always seemed off to me. When you're acting all "I am the baddest mofo in the world" and then you disappear in the fourth quarter of every playoff game ever in Minnesota, something doesn't jive.

guys check out this si story on kg from a week before the 95 draft: http://vault.sportsillustrated.cnn.com/vault/article/magazine/MAG1006749/index.htm

"There are concerns about Garnett's maturity, his social skills, his sense of responsibility, his friends and his diet."

hahaha it goes on to site shawn kemp as an emotionally mature success story!

like clowns passing out candy wearing blindfolds (call all destroyer), Friday, 8 May 2009 04:47 (fifteen years ago) link

Yeah sure, he's such a great assassin that each of the twenty seven teams he's played for worked like hell to re-up with him over the summer - just cause he's a 3rd option on a great team doesn't make him some sort of cold blooded hitman. You put JJ Redick on the Celtics, he'll shoot 60%.
