Smashed avo is turning the kids into fat, gay druggies; no wonder they can't afford to buy houses. Probably Turing them foreign too, better send them to manus island, quick.

you want to buy a house? stop eating this fruit in particular. you want to get married? stop being gay. you're unemployed? get a made-up job that doesn't exist you lazy bastard.

I thought the new thing was to get an unpaid job at Woolies, displacing someone getting paid for it.

oh yeah, that too. the government is handing out corporate welfare cheques subsidies to businesses to employ slave labour interns to do the shit nobody else wants to do gain valuable work experience while simultaneously fucking up wage scales for everyone else reducing unemployment.

australia the australian government is tearing itself apart over same-sex marriage
this week has been astonishing. one backbencher says "i'll cross the floor to make this happen", a powerbroking bigot says "ohhhh no you don't, here's a threat to your job/power/preselection if you even fucking dare", repeat like a hundred times. and a new batch of threats that the prime minister will be torn down if he even dares to treat gay people like human beings. OVER FUCKING NOTHING.

Good luck Australia. Haven't been paying close attention w/our upcoming election, but is the republicanism issue getting tied up w/this as well?
― etc, Wednesday, 2 August 2017 09:41 (six years ago) link
it is in that tony abbott (you remember, the guy who invented the marriage plebiscite) thinks a public vote on becoming a republic would be "an attack on australia's way of life"
― rove mcmanus island (Autumn Almanac), Wednesday, 2 August 2017 09:57 (six years ago) link
so kicking all gay people in the face is fine but voting on a republic is fucking disgusting

apple-cheeked kevin rudd, with his pruned words and licked lips, was on cnn earlier, not discussing trump's part in the leaked call transcript as they hoped but instead blandly but vengefully sticking it to turnbull. it was quite the standard performance.

Is this heading for a referendum to legalise/enshrine or what's going on?
― jk rowling obituary thread (darraghmac), Saturday, 5 August 2017 01:08 (six years ago) link
last year parliament blocked the plebiscite and kicked it out because it's fucking bollocks.
what's happened now is that a few government backbenchers have lost their shit and said let's just change the law and get this done. the bigots who run the govt have responded by shitting their pants in public, so on monday they're all having a party meeting to sort this out.
btw unlike ireland we can't have a referendum because marriage isn't defined in our constitution. it's all in a standard law that parliament can modify on its own. our (unnecessary) public vote's only being championed by bigots.
― rove mcmanus island (Autumn Almanac), Saturday, 5 August 2017 01:31 (six years ago) link
btw i hope i didn't come across condescending, the bigots have contrived such a complicated web of bullshit that it can be difficult to get to the truth

the bigots want that. currently a portion of the country's running around yelling things like "DEMOCRACY" and "LET ME HAVE MY SAY" because (a) they think the plebiscite is binding (it's not, it's a toothless opinion poll) and (b) they think farming equality out to a fucking vox pop is somehow how democracy works.
the truth is there's no need for a public vote on this. there's no precedent for it in australia's history. it's just all lies.
― rove mcmanus island (Autumn Almanac), Saturday, 5 August 2017 01:43 (six years ago) link
Would you anticipate a positive result from any such?
― jk rowling obituary thread (darraghmac), Saturday, 5 August 2017 01:45 (six years ago) link
nah. our bigots are so insanely bigoted that they're genuinely destroying their own government just to stop it. the whole country is in shock atm.
one of the nutbags has started pushing for a postal vote, which... i just

our bigots are so insanely bigoted that they're genuinely destroying their own government just to stop it.
sorry, i should expand on this: a few in govt have already said they'll ignore a plebiscite result they don't like, and the prime minister gave them permission to do that. so if all their tactics, all their hate campaigning, all their vote rigging fails and equality wins, they'll vote against it in parliament anyway.
the way we'll get a positive result is by a change of government, most likely 2019. the opposition will straight-up do equality within a couple of months.

― American Fear of Pranksterism (Ed), Saturday, 5 August 2017 03:38 (six years ago) link
australian labor's always been closer to unions. that works out well when the unions are doing objectively good things, not so much when joe de gay-panic abuses his position to bash his own members and hijack government policy.

me, I suspect that next blue sky sesh from the right of the liberal party is going to give us the grand idea of having a deciding all this with a poll on the australian's website (requires subscription to the australian)
