australia the australian government is tearing itself apart over same-sex marriage

this week has been astonishing. one backbencher says "i'll cross the floor to make this happen", a powerbroking bigot says "ohhhh no you don't, here's a threat to your job/power/preselection if you even fucking dare", repeat like a hundred times. and a new batch of threats that the prime minister will be torn down if he even dares to treat gay people like human beings. OVER FUCKING NOTHING.

blink truther (Autumn Almanac), Wednesday, 2 August 2017 01:11 (six years ago) link

Good luck Australia. Haven't been paying close attention w/our upcoming election, but is the republicanism issue getting tied up w/this as well?

etc, Wednesday, 2 August 2017 09:41 (six years ago) link

it is in that tony abbott (you remember, the guy who invented the marriage plebiscite) thinks a public vote on becoming a republic would be "an attack on australia's way of life"

rove mcmanus island (Autumn Almanac), Wednesday, 2 August 2017 09:57 (six years ago) link

so kicking all gay people in the face is fine but voting on a republic is fucking disgusting

rove mcmanus island (Autumn Almanac), Wednesday, 2 August 2017 09:58 (six years ago) link

not that he's a vengeful fucking bigot or anything

rove mcmanus island (Autumn Almanac), Wednesday, 2 August 2017 09:58 (six years ago) link

it gets worse from tone: http://www.news.com.au/national/politics/why-tony-abbott-wont-back-gay-marriage-bill-marriage-protects-women-and-children/news-story/eacc389ec0e02c53e5dd59275164d69d

then he had a go at the homeless people living on the streets in sydney

thank u onion boy for your hot takes

turnbull is calling a special party room meeting on monday to ???????

rove mcmanus island (Autumn Almanac), Thursday, 3 August 2017 23:06 (six years ago) link

i really really really really hope the bigots throw punches/hurl chairs in the meeting, just so the country can see how desperately bigoted they are

rove mcmanus island (Autumn Almanac), Thursday, 3 August 2017 23:08 (six years ago) link

Why does anyone still give Abott airtime? he isnt the fecking PM anymore, he should learn his place.

Stoop Crone (Trayce), Thursday, 3 August 2017 23:42 (six years ago) link

he will only learn his proper place when he is dead

rove mcmanus island (Autumn Almanac), Thursday, 3 August 2017 23:59 (six years ago) link

And we all line up to piss on his grave

Mince Pramthwart (James Morrison), Friday, 4 August 2017 00:07 (six years ago) link

apple-cheeked kevin rudd, with his pruned words and licked lips, was on cnn earlier, not discussing trump's part in the leaked call transcript as they hoped but instead blandly but vengefully sticking it to turnbull. it was quite the standard performance.

estela, Friday, 4 August 2017 00:15 (six years ago) link

Found Kevin Rudd in an old Raymond Briggs children's book I was reading to my daughter

he is indeed doggedly and unrelentingly there

xp wow that's eerie

rove mcmanus island (Autumn Almanac), Friday, 4 August 2017 00:25 (six years ago) link

lol it's really him
he has the pink look of a boy of yore whose mother has rubbed his face clean with a hanky and smoothed his hair down with spittle.

estela, Friday, 4 August 2017 00:41 (six years ago) link

estela would you kindly take up the position of kevin rudd's official biographer

rove mcmanus island (Autumn Almanac), Friday, 4 August 2017 00:52 (six years ago) link

btw i love how the libs/nats are all "whyyyy are we still talking about this whyyyy" when it's 100% their fault we're still talking about this

rove mcmanus island (Autumn Almanac), Friday, 4 August 2017 00:57 (six years ago) link

Ironically "special party room" is the gayest thing anyone will write on the internet today.

Andrew Farrell, Friday, 4 August 2017 09:02 (six years ago) link

what about... back-door attempt

rove mcmanus island (Autumn Almanac), Friday, 4 August 2017 09:35 (six years ago) link

ooh err shoppie missus

Smootown Philly (King Boy Pato), Friday, 4 August 2017 12:35 (six years ago) link

I did like a suggestion in the Twittersphere of what the leaked Trump call would have been like with Tone/Keating/any Prime Minister that had some sort of personality, even if it was 'eats onions with skin on and has weird Rhodes-esque thoughts.'

Smootown Philly (King Boy Pato), Friday, 4 August 2017 12:37 (six years ago) link

Is this heading for a referendum to legalise/enshrine or what's going on?

jk rowling obituary thread (darraghmac), Saturday, 5 August 2017 01:08 (six years ago) link

last year parliament blocked the plebiscite and kicked it out because it's fucking bollocks.

what's happened now is that a few government backbenchers have lost their shit and said let's just change the law and get this done. the bigots who run the govt have responded by shitting their pants in public, so on monday they're all having a party meeting to sort this out.

btw unlike ireland we can't have a referendum because marriage isn't defined in our constitution. it's all in a standard law that parliament can modify on its own. our (unnecessary) public vote's only being championed by bigots.

rove mcmanus island (Autumn Almanac), Saturday, 5 August 2017 01:31 (six years ago) link

btw i hope i didn't come across condescending, the bigots have contrived such a complicated web of bullshit that it can be difficult to get to the truth

rove mcmanus island (Autumn Almanac), Saturday, 5 August 2017 01:35 (six years ago) link

I read an article, maybe linked here about the shoppies being a catholic union and being a bunch of bastards more likely to side with employers than their members.

American Fear of Pranksterism (Ed), Saturday, 5 August 2017 01:38 (six years ago) link

Not condescending at all in fact I'm now terrifically confused tbh

jk rowling obituary thread (darraghmac), Saturday, 5 August 2017 01:39 (six years ago) link

yeah joe de bruyn's a fuckhead xp

the bigots want that. currently a portion of the country's running around yelling things like "DEMOCRACY" and "LET ME HAVE MY SAY" because (a) they think the plebiscite is binding (it's not, it's a toothless opinion poll) and (b) they think farming equality out to a fucking vox pop is somehow how democracy works.

the truth is there's no need for a public vote on this. there's no precedent for it in australia's history. it's just all lies.

rove mcmanus island (Autumn Almanac), Saturday, 5 August 2017 01:43 (six years ago) link

Would you anticipate a positive result from any such?

jk rowling obituary thread (darraghmac), Saturday, 5 August 2017 01:45 (six years ago) link

nah. our bigots are so insanely bigoted that they're genuinely destroying their own government just to stop it. the whole country is in shock atm.

one of the nutbags has started pushing for a postal vote, which... i just

rove mcmanus island (Autumn Almanac), Saturday, 5 August 2017 01:57 (six years ago) link

i mean the law's not even a religious law, church and state are reasonably well separated here

rove mcmanus island (Autumn Almanac), Saturday, 5 August 2017 01:58 (six years ago) link

our bigots are so insanely bigoted that they're genuinely destroying their own government just to stop it.

sorry, i should expand on this: a few in govt have already said they'll ignore a plebiscite result they don't like, and the prime minister gave them permission to do that. so if all their tactics, all their hate campaigning, all their vote rigging fails and equality wins, they'll vote against it in parliament anyway.

the way we'll get a positive result is by a change of government, most likely 2019. the opposition will straight-up do equality within a couple of months.

rove mcmanus island (Autumn Almanac), Saturday, 5 August 2017 02:01 (six years ago) link

That was the article, how do the shoppies even get to be part of the labour movement?

American Fear of Pranksterism (Ed), Saturday, 5 August 2017 03:38 (six years ago) link

australian labor's always been closer to unions. that works out well when the unions are doing objectively good things, not so much when joe de gay-panic abuses his position to bash his own members and hijack government policy.

rove mcmanus island (Autumn Almanac), Saturday, 5 August 2017 03:46 (six years ago) link

me, I suspect that next blue sky sesh from the right of the liberal party is going to give us the grand idea of having a deciding all this with a poll on the australian's website (requires subscription to the australian)

Smootown Philly (King Boy Pato), Saturday, 5 August 2017 09:16 (six years ago) link

thing is i wouldn't be at all surprised if they proposed that

rove mcmanus island (Autumn Almanac), Saturday, 5 August 2017 23:44 (six years ago) link

btw dean smith was super impressive (for a Liberal) on insiders this morning

rove mcmanus island (Autumn Almanac), Saturday, 5 August 2017 23:44 (six years ago) link

Didn't soil himself and then proposition the host before falling out of his chair? Can't be a real Liberal.
