The "original" is more of an epic electro-house number with a live post-punk bassline, occasionally rockish breakdowns in the drums and skronky guitar. It could actually be a house remix of "House of Jealous Lovers".
Potentially the titles for the original version and the dub are mixed up on my single, although what's labelled as the "Doria Dub" certainly *sounds* like a dub mix.

MJ's Bad LP skirts the edge here. Prince himself dubbed it "pathetic".

I picked up The Family's debut (only?) record this week for 1 quid in the Zavvi. This really is a great, sort of lightweight, carefree record. Reminds me a bit of Controversy. I wondered if anyone knew just how much this was a Prince record? He doesn't get much in the way of producing or writing credits, but it sounds like every little thing was done by him, even some of the vocals. Anyone know just how large his contribution was? Cheers

i agree with "oh sheila" and "closer" for sure
― Tracy Michael Jordan Catalano (Jordan), Friday, 30 January 2009 19:17 (fifteen years ago) link
"oh sheila" is kind of a bad rip-off. "Closer" is... well, closer, but has a few more tricks up his sleeve than to come right out and say something appalling like "My whole existence is flawed."

scout -
He wrote all the songs on that, did most of the guide vocals also. There are plenty of the demos for the album floating around the interwebs. A sweet rehearsal with The Family is out there, too.

btw - kind of a rare record at the moment, at least in the US! Out of print for years.

yeah, i've never heard the Family or Madhouse records and i'd like to.

I think most of the albums made in the 1980s by members of Prince's "family" are mostly or fully written by Prince, and he plays most of the instruments on them too. This applies at least to The Family album, the first three albums by The Time, the first Sheila E. album, the first Jill Jones album, and the Vanity 6 and Appollonia 6 albums. The reason why Prince isn't credited on these albums, or he gets the credit only for one or two songs, is because the artists or Prince himself didn't want it to look like they were mere puppets of his.
― Tuomas, Friday, 30 January 2009 19:27 (fifteen years ago) link
The Family record is as good as the Vanity 6 record is fun and dumb i.e. not incredibly so, but not as bad as Mazarati (although I really really wished Mazarati were good. That album cover. Prince's attempt to cash in on superficial 80s dress fashion via Purple Mercenaries with occasionally great songs is really fucking funny and awesome in retrospect.)

btw tuomas i've been listening to those 12" mixes a lot. the kiss extended version is crazy, it almost sounds like he went back and did it while making lovesexy.
― Tracy Michael Jordan Catalano (Jordan), Friday, 30 January 2009 19:29 (fifteen years ago) link
"High Fashion", "Screams Of Passion", "Nothing Compares 2 U" are the highlights on that Family record.
"Yes" was better than most of Lovesexy, but I'm a Lovesexy hatah, so keep in mind.

Whatever happened to St. Paul the dude?
I remember seeing a video for a song "If I were a Rich Man" in the late 80s thinking, man this really sucks compared to the Family, and then that was it.
― System Jr. (Mackro Mackro), Friday, 30 January 2009 19:32 (fifteen years ago) link
I think the Family album is okay, but the male vocalist on it isn't very good. The best Prince side projects I've heard are the titular album by Jill Jones and Exodus by the New Power Generation. The Jill Jones record has good song material ("Mia Bocca"!) and she's simply a better singer than Vanity or Sheila E. or Morris Day or whoever it is who sings on that Family album. And Exodus simply has some great funk grooves, plus a few pretty ballads and a weird but cool psychedelic rock number.
Too bad most of this stuff has been out print for years, and since even Prince's own albums from the 80s have never been reissued and remastered, it seems unlikely the side projects will be reissued soon either.

i saw st. paul with a band of ex-prince dudes (incl. erik leeds) last year. it was an decent show, but they stayed away from prince tunes and st. paul seemed a little bitter that the club wasn't packed and that he's not more famous.

# Prince changed the lyrics "You don't have to watch Dynasty/To have an attitude" to "You don't have to watch Sex and the City/To have an attitude" and later to "You don't have to watch Desperate Housewives" and "You don't have to watch Queer Eye for the Straight Guy/To have an attitude" during his 2004 Musicology Tour.# In his performances at the O2 Arena in London, UK, Prince changed the lyrics to 'You don't have to watch Big Brother/To have an attitude."
All true enough, I guess.

How the hell did he fit "Queer Eye for the Straight Guy" in the place of "Dynasty" in the song? Did he add a few extra bars to it?

― mose def (kenan), Friday, 30 January 2009 19:57 (fifteen years ago) link
Keep in mind that if there are any reissues, they will be done via Prince, and Prince will likely do a lot of overdubbing over lyrics he now consideres improper, for starters.
In other words, start thinking about raiding the cache of the original WB releases while you can -- even if they're quieter and aren't remastered to oughties standards.
― System Jr. (Mackro Mackro), Friday, 30 January 2009 20:14 (fifteen years ago) link
Then again, I don't know if Prince has control over his old catalog, or when he will be given his old catalog back.
Rhino/WB would be the folks to talk too -- although, surely, they have tried to get on the Prince reissue wagon years ago, and well we all know how Prince feels about Rhino/WB, so they probably got denied and will always be denied. Who knows? but I'm not holding my breath.

Because of this thread, I put on Sheila E. Romance 1600. This whole record really blurs the line between prince-not-prince and just plain old prince.
