but seriously mary, wanting a crappy product to succeed solely for competitive effects is missing the point of a competitive market

You're assuming that 1) I think the Zune is crappy and 2) the Zune is crappy. Didn't it just come out today? I have no idea what it's like. If it's crap then word of mouth will kill it and it will fade into obscurity. But if it is a quality product that sells well then I repeat what I said before.

musically (musically), Tuesday, 14 November 2006 06:41 (seventeen years ago) link

i would put money on it being crappy (1 and 2) although the crappy definition process seems like a big turnoff. i wonder what the odds are on it failing. anyone know any internet bookmakers?

It's isn't rackmount, and there's no FDDI option. Completely useless.

Steve Jobs:

"I've seen the demonstrations on the Internet about how you can find another person using a Zune and give them a song they can play three times. It takes forever. By the time you've gone through all that, the girl's got up and left! You're much better off to take one of your earbuds out and put it in her ear. Then you're connected with about two feet of headphone cable"

LOL

Nothing like walking right up to a girl on the bus and just stickin' it in her ear.

You're assuming that 1) I think the Zune is crappy and 2) the Zune is crappy.

I don't really understand why this is an unsafe assumption. It's a Microsoft product that almost rivals a Sony product in terms of its gimmickiness, ugliness, and utter uselessness in performing anything other than lining the pockets of MS.

(Which it won't do. Cuz anyone with a brain knows it is teh suck).

trees (treesessplode), Tuesday, 14 November 2006 16:17 (seventeen years ago) link

hahaha that is astounding the Microsoft's competitor to the iPod won't play tech it has developed and propagandized under the moniker "PlaysForSure". amazing.

Hi Dave Fischer!

Anyway, it took Microsoft 5 years to catch up with the iPod and they couldn't even launch the product with a working video store?

Also, did any bloggers get a "free" Zune with instructions to return it in 2 weeks. Fuck writing free good PR for someone who won't even give you a free fucking toy.

The "features" of the Zune only seem to impress neophiles and 17 year old boys who think the PSP is better than the DS.

roc u like a § (ex machina), Tuesday, 14 November 2006 16:53 (seventeen years ago) link

I don't care about the Zune and I normally don't get worked up about these sorts of things but the paying a license fee to Uni per hardware unit is a bad bad bad bad bad thing. Like I kind of feel someone should take them to court over this bad thing.

Eppy (Eppy), Tuesday, 14 November 2006 17:14 (seventeen years ago) link

Well its their own fucking fault, but I think the Zune and iPod's exclusive DRM schemes are going to push smaller players out of the mp3 player market eventually as the record companies are not going to want to deal with every company out there.

roc u like a § (ex machina), Tuesday, 14 November 2006 17:20 (seventeen years ago) link

It's obvious even to me (a computer/tech LAMER) that this thing is laughably crap.

Reason enough to hate this P.O.S. - the preloaded tracks:

* Band of Horses, “Wicked Gil” (Sub Pop)
* Bitter:Sweet, “The Mating Game” (Quango Music Group)
* CSS, “Alala (Microsoft edit)” (Sub Pop)
* Darkel, “At The End of The Sky (edit)” (Astralwerks)
* Every Move A Picture, “Signs of Life” (V2 Records)
* Small Sins, “Stay” (Astralwerks)
* The Adored, “Tell Me Tell Me” (V2 Records)
* The Rakes, “Open Book” (V2 Records)
* The Thermals, “A Pillar of Salt” (Sub Pop)

I don't really care about the Zune either so much as I'm just fascinated by the ineptitude of one of the world's most successful corporations.

Why make it look like the iPod click wheel if it doesn't work the same way and only serves to remind people that they bought the player without a click wheel?

That is a very good question. I'm starting to wonder that, too. Zune could definitely live without the circular buttons. Maybe it's to make the transition easier?

roc u like a § (ex machina), Tuesday, 14 November 2006 17:54 (seventeen years ago) link

What I'm seeing thus far: the hardware is great; bright and large screen, very pretty and vivid colors. In spite of myself, I'm really impressed with the built in radio; stations come in verra verra clear and it displays call signs, format and song names if the station encodes in that way. The visuals on the software are pleasant and the general control scheme on the machine is simple and reasonably efficient. It feels somehow less blocky and heavy than the pod, maybe because of the lack of metal on the case.

The software is fucking horrible. I've been trying to install it for hours and it won't work at all. It's not transferring the album cover jpegs that I put on tracks. The software is having an impossible time collating all my media and is locking up and freezing my computer. I've had to restart the machine at least three times. I've yet to be able to put a single video file on either the player or the machine. The software is about as counterintuitive and useless as can be.

Songs wirelessly transferred from one Zune to another can only be played three times. After three days, the song expires – regardless of whether or not it has been played. Just playing half the song (or one minute, whichever comes first) counts as one “play.” You can never resend a song to the same friend, nor can a song received from someone else be passed on to a third person. These limitations apply to all files, including copyright-free self-recorded songs and similar. [2]

it's not available in Canada till Spring 07 because thats when the Canadian Zune store will be ready.

Because how else would I possibly fill my Zune with music to listen to without a store?

pinder (pinder), Tuesday, 14 November 2006 23:29 (seventeen years ago) link

after reading about this here and elsewhere online, the zune is borderline comical at this point.

tk (tk), Tuesday, 14 November 2006 23:44 (seventeen years ago) link

To be fair, Zune is informing me that I have something like 123 thousand media files and it's understandable that it would have some burps trying to figure out how to stow all of them.
That said, it's been about 24 hours and it still hasn't finished completely installing.
