YAY! My life's work is now accomplished! (I think we're the Holy Diver cover too, which is the best Dio album!)

the funny thing about what's natural for indie kids is after they move towards more obscure stuff, they move back to less obscure stuff and say things like "no, I REALLY like Neil Diamond."

10pts to whomever knows where that Neil Diamond line comes from...

Dan Selzer (Dan Selzer), Wednesday, 31 March 2004 20:16 (twenty years ago) link

I like Interpol. They have a leg up on a lot of the ADD-riddled antisocial peformance artists/bands championed in many a thread on ILM, but then again, I like actual songs more than pseudo-shocking noise these days...

Baked Bean Teeth (Baked Bean Teeth), Wednesday, 31 March 2004 20:19 (twenty years ago) link

how cute

ned ragggettt, Wednesday, 31 March 2004 20:22 (twenty years ago) link

It seems like they probably get a lot of sex.

@d@ml (nordicskilla), Wednesday, 31 March 2004 20:25 (twenty years ago) link

I saw them, in milwaukee, once. well, I saw half a song, by them, in milwaukee, once. I was tired and I think they were boring and I left. they were in the bar, beforehand, and I was thinking "haha, who are these guys?"

RJG (RJG), Wednesday, 31 March 2004 20:27 (twenty years ago) link

i'll bet that they didn't even notice you.

dean! (deangulberry), Wednesday, 31 March 2004 20:45 (twenty years ago) link

baked bean teeth so OTMFM it hurts

kephm, Wednesday, 31 March 2004 20:47 (twenty years ago) link

OH THEY NOTICED ME

RJG (RJG), Wednesday, 31 March 2004 20:58 (twenty years ago) link

I think you guys overestimated the indie douchebags. Look at all the friendster profiles for photo majors in my area and you see:

INTERPOL, THE VU, SONIC YOUTH, THE STROKES, PEACHES, THE RAPTURE, HOT HOT HEAT

Lil' Won Jilliams (ex machina), Wednesday, 31 March 2004 21:01 (twenty years ago) link

I think this thread proves that Interpol aren't good OR bad enough to be hated properly.

Subject: Franz Ferdinand!! (soo rockin!)

Body: Ok, so my good friend turned me onto this new band Franz Ferdinand. And may I say... freakin' AWESOME!! It has been so long since I heard songs sooo good and sooo rockin' that I have to blast it and actually jump around and dance and shake my booty! Seriously, this band rocks, and I mean that cool old fashioned funk edgey raw type of rock, with the catchiest hooks, but pure music all the way thru. An album that will make your head bop and foot tap involuntarily, for sure. Everyone should run out and buy it NOW!! You will NOT be dissappointed!

Lil' Won Jilliams (ex machina), Wednesday, 31 March 2004 21:03 (twenty years ago) link

i dont know, "pure music" sounds pretty good to me. what more do you want?

Felonious Drunk (Felcher), Wednesday, 31 March 2004 21:20 (twenty years ago) link

Jon, you should move to Alaska. I guarantee you your local online communities will not have those bands in their profiles.

donut bitch (donut), Wednesday, 31 March 2004 21:21 (twenty years ago) link

yeah what a bitch. she doesn't deserve to be on friendster.

(xposts)

dean! (deangulberry), Wednesday, 31 March 2004 21:21 (twenty years ago) link

oh yeah, Franz Ferdinand is the band this time. I've only heard 1 song by them, which is one less then what I've head from Interpol. Though I've heard the Morgan Geist remix, and it has some sexy production as usual. We've already had FF threads. Let's please have more bands that sound more and more like the Monochrome Set. Not that FF do, from what I've heard, but they're namechecked. The Monochrome Set is definately my favorite band in 2004.

Dan Selzer (Dan Selzer), Wednesday, 31 March 2004 21:25 (twenty years ago) link

I can't wait for the next hot indie band that rips off Eat or the New Fast Automatic Daffodils or another overlooked/forgotten band from the early 90s.

donut bitch (donut), Wednesday, 31 March 2004 21:32 (twenty years ago) link

(or can't wait until Chunklet puts together a side-splitting "how to be a hot indie band in the new millenium" check list which includes all of the above)

donut bitch (donut), Wednesday, 31 March 2004 21:33 (twenty years ago) link

Maybe they're hated 'cause the one guy looks like Crispin Glover in "Willard."

I can never listen to the album, because it's just too slow and samey, but when "Obstacle 1" comes on the radio, I always mentally remark on what a great song it is. (Especially when it kicks into that whole final section that I always forget is coming.)

morris pavilion (samjeff), Wednesday, 31 March 2004 21:40 (twenty years ago) link

If I weren't so busy (i.e. fucking lazy) I'd start a Madchester-sounding band here in NYC, spend a couple years getting somewhat decent, and then make millions.

I heard that Interpol's producer wrote the entire album. That's the rumor at least.

Aaron W (Aaron W), Wednesday, 31 March 2004 21:47 (twenty years ago) link

interpol had many many years of playing at Brownies to write all those songs.

If you listen to !!! and the Rapture at the same time you kind of have a madchester band.

In any case, if you do start said band, I'll produce it.

Dan Selzer -- Baggy NYC Productions

donut bitch (donut), Wednesday, 31 March 2004 21:50 (twenty years ago) link

The first thing I thought when I heard !!! was Happy Mondays...

M@tt He1geson (Matt Helgeson), Wednesday, 31 March 2004 22:03 (twenty years ago) link

!!!'s mistake is that that guy just has to shut up and just shake maracas instead.

donut bitch (donut), Wednesday, 31 March 2004 22:06 (twenty years ago) link

they also need to do a lot more drugs. wagons full.

donut bitch (donut), Wednesday, 31 March 2004 22:07 (twenty years ago) link

Pills (for acid reflux ugh) Thrills (ok, not too many) and Bellyaches (I already mentioned the acid reflux, right?)

and personal insight...they do plenty of drugs.

Dan Selzer (Dan Selzer), Wednesday, 31 March 2004 22:08 (twenty years ago) link

'I think it is ridiculous that so many people talk about them being well dressed. And you think the shit they were is expensive? I don't know, I haven't seen them in a while, but just because someone is wearing a jacket, doesn't mean that they are well dressed or that they spent a lot of money. You can find a black jacket for $.99 at a thrift store.'

i was thinking more of the Dolce & Gabbana suits that they're wearing constantly.

Belgian Rofflez (Adrian Langston), Wednesday, 31 March 2004 22:10 (twenty years ago) link

Damn you're right it's already been done... ah well, you can still produce us Dan.

Aaron W (Aaron W), Wednesday, 31 March 2004 22:12 (twenty years ago) link

Does this mean when !!! go sober, they'll have to change their name to )))?

donut bitch (donut), Wednesday, 31 March 2004 22:13 (twenty years ago) link

actually, it'll be XXX

!

Dan Selzer (Dan Selzer), Wednesday, 31 March 2004 22:18 (twenty years ago) link

"I heard that Interpol's producer wrote the entire album. That's the rumor at least"

this is my favorite of all jealous accusations. how many variations on this have we all heard, about so many different records? there's another thread idea.. although i do believe it in at least one case. guess which?

duke goggle, Wednesday, 31 March 2004 22:19 (twenty years ago) link

I heard Interpol had their stomach pumped backstage after swallowing an entire pint of semen

donut bitch (donut), Wednesday, 31 March 2004 22:21 (twenty years ago) link

can I be in this hypothetical band, Aaron? I can play drums or guitar or synths. Also, can we recruit lauren? I hear she plays a mean bass.

hstencil, Wednesday, 31 March 2004 22:23 (twenty years ago) link

The Animal Collective's records are completely written by their producer.

However their producer is a mystical forest sprite whose name cannot be pronounced in english.

Word is he just got an MPC and wants to do some neptunes style beats.

Lauren plays a meaner Elka Organ.

Dan Selzer (Dan Selzer), Wednesday, 31 March 2004 22:25 (twenty years ago) link

Animal Collective sure like delay, woooh boy.

hstencil, Wednesday, 31 March 2004 22:26 (twenty years ago) link

Having your producer write your album is how you achieve rockdom.. Ask Primal Scream.

donut bitch (donut), Wednesday, 31 March 2004 22:27 (twenty years ago) link

Yeah, that rumor was just my attempt to throw kerosene on the fire. Caught me! But the rumor that IS true is that Carlos really wants to be Lestat. And is a wicked speed metal guitarist.

can I be in this hypothetical band, Aaron? I can play drums or guitar or synths. Also, can we recruit lauren? I hear she plays a mean bass.

Oh snap.... I think we've got ourselves a band. I used to take singing lessons. Not that it ever helped. And can play the guitar. And the keytar.

Aaron W (Aaron W), Wednesday, 31 March 2004 22:27 (twenty years ago) link

awesome!

hstencil, Wednesday, 31 March 2004 22:29 (twenty years ago) link

and while I'm not implying that duke is referring to the Rapture, I'd like to say that while the DFA certainly did a lot, the band was capable prior to meeting them, and deserve more credit then they get. Please listen to "The Chair that Squeaks".

Dan Selzer (Dan Selzer), Wednesday, 31 March 2004 22:29 (twenty years ago) link

no i was going after 'live through this.' if anything rapture should get the hell out of there...

duke outlandish, Wednesday, 31 March 2004 22:34 (twenty years ago) link

I've been of that opinion as well.

Dan Selzer (Dan Selzer), Wednesday, 31 March 2004 22:36 (twenty years ago) link

Interpol are a beautiful kind of gloomy. Joy Division's gloom is just grotty (except for that one song about love and tearing apart and whatever). There's a time and place for both but seriously, quit ruining my fun with some kind of "the band that broke up when you were three were better!" bullshit.

Also, the Strokes fucking rule and you know it.

(I feel like Bizarro Chuck Eddy.)

Nate in ST.P (natedetritus), Thursday, 1 April 2004 01:13 (twenty years ago) link

Interpol are a beautiful kind of gloomy

Then give a chance to the Chameleons and the Kitchens, then. I'm not saying this as a criticism, merely to suggest trying 'em out. If ya hate 'em, ya hate 'em, but the Joy Division bait is as obvious as the bullshit you're complaining about.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Thursday, 1 April 2004 01:15 (twenty years ago) link

Do the Chameleons and the Kitchens (of Distinction, apparently) still exist? Because I'm getting kind of tired of the underlying "too bad you didn't get into this stuff when it was better 15-20 YEARS AGO!" attitude involved in the Interpol-hate.

Nate in ST.P (natedetritus), Thursday, 1 April 2004 01:18 (twenty years ago) link

Interpol raids twenty years of brit/wanna-be brit guitar tones, adds a heavier rhythm section and singing baiting lyrics about the girls they'd like to date. There's nothing remotely Joy Division about them at all. I like J.D. a bit more, but for totally different reasons. I think Interpol vs. Echo & The Bunnymen is a LOT more valid a debate. And I think Interpol win.

I heard one Kitchens album, Love Is Hell, and while I enjoyed it, they lack any Simon LeBon flair whatsoever.

Anthony Miccio (Anthony Miccio), Thursday, 1 April 2004 01:19 (twenty years ago) link

Do the Chameleons and the Kitchens (of Distinction, apparently) still exist?

Actually, yeah to the Chameleons. Full new album three years ago and the tour a year and a half ago was fucking stellar, beyond words, though I did try to say a few things.

Emotional resonance for every individual in the moment and of the now is vitally important stuff. But those feelings and reactions need not have been just invented yesterday either.

they lack any Simon LeBon flair whatsoever.

Interpol vs. Duran Duran is, I think, no contest.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Thursday, 1 April 2004 01:22 (twenty years ago) link

agreed.

*snickers*

Anthony Miccio (Anthony Miccio), Thursday, 1 April 2004 01:23 (twenty years ago) link

Hey Ned I played a track off the Chameleon's double album last week and enjoyed it very much thank you very much! Might have to make a tape of it.

christhamrin (christhamrin), Thursday, 1 April 2004 01:38 (twenty years ago) link

:-) Very cool!

Ned Raggett (Ned), Thursday, 1 April 2004 01:40 (twenty years ago) link

Do the Chameleons and the Kitchens (of Distinction, apparently) still exist? Because I'm getting kind of tired of the underlying "too bad you didn't get into this stuff when it was better 15-20 YEARS AGO!" attitude involved in the Interpol-hate.

I think all the "Interpol = Chameleons/KOD ripoffs" statements might be partly musical bragging, but moreso an opportunity for folks who were into the Chameleons and K.O.D. to passionate plug them once again, and also express and explain why Interpol doesn't really excite them. Understandably, this can come off badly. (I plead guilty to all of the above at one point.)

Also, two reason I think Interpol succeeded where, say, Kitchens didn't as much, is a) Interpol is three syllables, and b) Interpol didn't have overtly (literally) gay lyrics.

(Not to say having gay lyrics and few syllables is a recipe for non-success.. Frankie Goes To Hollywood is a shining counterexample to that, among others.. but for a three-to-four piece "indie" band, maybe so WAAAAAY back in the 90s)
