Used to be "If There Is Something," which often does seem like the best song in the history of the world. Has any song ever shifted so radically from cornball to sublime?

Now it's "Street Life," which is just the most thrilling shit ever.

Dave Segal (Da ve Segal), Saturday, 28 May 2005 18:15 (eighteen years ago) link

those are two of my faves, and I'm always frustrated when reading reviews that site street life as being an inferior thrill of it all. It's all about the handclaps!

wish everybody would leave me alone..

So, I'm officially Ned Ragget. It's payday and I went and blew all my pocket money on CD reissues of the first three Roxy Music albums and the 17 Seconds/Faith/Pornography tryptch that just got the double disc treatment.

"All I Want Is You"

Hell, just the first couple seconds of guitar anarchy at the beginning will do it for me.

gareth, thoughts.

'street life', despite the most underwhelming closing line ever. i think often bryan loses his way about 3/4 through writing the lyrics.

there's this incredible 12-minute version of "if there is something" that they did during a Peel session that you can find floating around on slsk. just... wow.

Fuck! I don't know! "Pyjamarama" some days, "Love is the Drug" on other days.

jmeister (jmeister), Thursday, 11 August 2005 00:41 (eighteen years ago) link

"If There Is Something" will always be a solid choice - it's three! three! three songs in one!

rogermexico (rogermexico), Thursday, 11 August 2005 01:36 (eighteen years ago) link

Torn, but I'll say "Mother of Pearl" over "Just Another High".

My favourite album is Country Life, this have the most great songs.

zeus, Monday, 19 September 2005 12:49 (eighteen years ago) link

Strange - I was looking at this thread just yesterday and decided against reviving it myself.

Now that someone else has done so, I'll choose "Mother Of Pearl" as THEE post-Eno Roxy track.

My favorite Roxy was seeing them do Lennon's "Jealous Guy," which they later released on an e.p. as the "High Road Tour" 1983.

I bought the first album first and listened to it distractedly. "Sea Breezes" is the first song the really stuck out and made me rewind first the track and then the album. So "Sea Breezes".

Pyjamarama--one of the definitive Roxy tracks in the whole oeuvre. How I WISH Soto had discussed it in his amazing series of Roxy podcasts...

Just discovering that "Amazona" clip upthread today, and it's amazing!

Never realized Phil's guitar fiff is kind of a variant of "It's Your Thing" by The Isley Brothers.
