As far as reissuing hits, WEA takes the cake for The Smiths. Singles, Best 1, Best 2, Best 1&2 box, The Best Of, blah blah blah. At least The World WOn't Listen and Hatful of Hollow had some merit when they came out. WEA needs to remaster the scant few proper albums that The Smiths released. 4 albums, 1 band with a ravenous following...seems simple to me.

The Dinosaur Jr. reissues on Merge are lame, too. Extra tracks/demos just have to be floating around. Instead we get lame fucking videos that you can watch on VH1's The Alternative.

While rubbish like Fleetwood Mac and Yes get the grand reissue treatment, classics are left w/ poor audio fidelity:

The Pretenders - The Pretenders
New Order - all back catalogue
Gang Of Four - Songs Of The Free (deleted in UK as well I believe)

These are all WEA-related albums (GOF was WEA in US), so why can't Rhino reissue these instead of the hated Mac and Yes?

Er, sorry, the previous entry should have gone to the Worst Reissues thread. Apologies...

Johnny Strangler, read a bit starting here: A thread for the Cure reissues
I asked about some fuzziness issues regarding Faith that may help you out. I'll have to listen to M tonight, but it may be a similar issue.

Regarding things that were on official releases but haven't been re-mastered and re-issue on the box set or on the re-issues (since we now have the track listings through KMKMKM), I have the following things missing:

Primary (12" version)
A Forest (live) and Killing An Arab (live) from A Single (The Hanging Garden) UK 2x7"
Let's Go To Bed (12" version)
Just One Kiss (12" version)
Love Cats (12" version)
In Between Days (12" version)
Close to Me (12" version)
Boys Don't Cry (New Voice/New Mix)
Why Can't I Be You (12" version)
Japanese Whispers (12" version)
Kyoto Song (live) and A Night Like This (live) from Catch UK 12"

Now I don't have Greatest Hits so maybe a couple of these were released in re-mastered form there. Please correct me if so. Also, am I missing anything? Just trying to get it all sorted out, you understand.

matt2 (matt2), Wednesday, 31 May 2006 19:13 (seventeen years ago) link

I thought this next batch of reissues was due in July. Bollocks....

Message To Johnny Strangler: no need to be SO punk rock, dude.

Jay Vee's Return (Manon_69), Wednesday, 31 May 2006 19:39 (seventeen years ago) link

Punk rock? Please. Just opinion on the matter. I'm 33...punk rock is a bit overdone by now, don't you think?

Johnny Strangler, Wednesday, 31 May 2006 19:50 (seventeen years ago) link

The implication of the 'all the singles' thing is that it's a DVD, not a CD.

LET ME DREAM

and oh yeah add Boys Don't Cry (New Voice/New Mix) to my list (ta matt2), though mainly because the New Voice/Club Mix can go on the EQUALLY IMAGINARY remix collection.

kit brash (kit brash), Wednesday, 31 May 2006 20:32 (seventeen years ago) link

Also, am I missing anything? Just trying to get it all sorted out, you understand.

There's the "Hot Hot Hot!!!" extended mix and the "Hey You!!!" extended mix. And I'm assuming that by "Japanese Whispers" you meant "A Japanese Dream"?

LeRooLeRoo (Seb), Wednesday, 31 May 2006 22:05 (seventeen years ago) link

Yep, sorry "A Japanese Dream." As for the extended "Hot Hot Hot!!!," I was thinking maybe, just maybe there would be a re-mastered Mixed Up, and since it was on the original Mixed Up, I didn't include it in the "all the things which should've been covered up through the KMKMKM re-issue" category. The "Hey You!!!" extended mix was actually included on the box set. Also, were the tracks on Galore re-mastered?

matt2 (matt2), Thursday, 1 June 2006 03:45 (seventeen years ago) link

Greatest Hits is remastered, Galore isn't IIRC

Kit, Thursday, 1 June 2006 04:11 (seventeen years ago) link

"Ariel" is hopelessly overpraised. I've never understood this. I would YSI the Top demos for discussion but apparently YSI-ing is no longer ILM-friendly? Ned I'm sure would agree they challenge the album itself.

chaki (chaki), Thursday, 8 June 2006 00:37 (seventeen years ago) link

one month passes...
So when the hell are these coming out??

Baaderonixx immer wieder (baaderonixx), Thursday, 20 July 2006 14:17 (seventeen years ago) link

Early August, like they said. What, did the date change?

Ned Raggett (Ned), Thursday, 20 July 2006 14:22 (seventeen years ago) link

The "Inbetween days" 12" is the same as the 7" version.

mark grout (mark grout), Thursday, 20 July 2006 14:27 (seventeen years ago) link

But I was said it was true.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Thursday, 20 July 2006 14:33 (seventeen years ago) link

They should really include Blue Sunshine in the next batch of reissues.

Jesus Dan (Dan Perry), Thursday, 20 July 2006 14:37 (seventeen years ago) link

Wow, that's the most stone-faced comment I've ever seen you give.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Thursday, 20 July 2006 14:39 (seventeen years ago) link

But isn't that the plan? COF says it's been pushed back a week or two

Baaderonixx immer wieder (baaderonixx), Thursday, 20 July 2006 14:45 (seventeen years ago) link

I pre-ordered mine at Amazon earlier this week, figuring why go through the charade of pretending I'm not going to buy them. According to Amazon, not that their word is gold, the discs are out 8/8 in the U.S. -- that isn't so far off.

BlastsOfStatic (BlastsofStatic), Thursday, 20 July 2006 16:02 (seventeen years ago) link

(I'm glad someone appreciated my Geir impression.)

Jesus Dan (Dan Perry), Thursday, 20 July 2006 16:05 (seventeen years ago) link

two weeks pass...
So the new batch is coming out tomorrow, am I wrong?

Das Spiel ist aus für Baaderonixx (baaderonixx), Monday, 7 August 2006 12:33 (seventeen years ago) link

I was told just KMKMKM, although maybe they just put up the most "popular one".. I dunno.

dottie nuttie dach nach dtnt hhhhhhhh (donut), Monday, 7 August 2006 12:42 (seventeen years ago) link

Well AMG has the reviews up and all of them have a 8 August release date, so here's hoping... Not sure I'll pick up the THOTD one for the moment.

Das Spiel ist aus für Baaderonixx (baaderonixx), Monday, 7 August 2006 12:45 (seventeen years ago) link

Due out tomorrow, yes. Am busy tomorrow night so I'll grab the Glove and The Top on Wednesday. The other two might have to wait a bit, but we'll see.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Monday, 7 August 2006 13:05 (seventeen years ago) link

Yeah, these two are my priorities right now (esp since the bonus discs of the other two don't seem that appealing)

Das Spiel ist aus für Baaderonixx (baaderonixx), Monday, 7 August 2006 13:11 (seventeen years ago) link

errgh, I just realized that these were coming out later in Europe...

Das Spiel ist aus für Baaderonixx (baaderonixx), Monday, 7 August 2006 14:27 (seventeen years ago) link

Just called Easy Street. They have all four apparently (although not sure if they have the right Glove one or not.) They're open until 12:30am, and I was told they might sell out of one or more of them before tomorrow evening, so I'm gonna have to bus over at midnight tonight to grab 'em, then bus back, and hit the sac.

dottie nuttie dach nach dtnt hhhhhhhh (donut), Monday, 7 August 2006 20:05 (seventeen years ago) link

damn seattle goths

Louis Jagger (Haberdager), Monday, 7 August 2006 20:26 (seventeen years ago) link

i'd like to purchase all 4 tomorrow, but i don't think i can spend that much money right now. i might pick up the glove or THOTD.

Christopher Costello (CGC), Monday, 7 August 2006 20:50 (seventeen years ago) link

The demos on the second disc with Robert singing are entertaining as shit. They're of a much higher quality that the home demos on the first four, though they still sound like demos - the drum machine is way high in the mix and Robert's not trying too too hard. But still... miles above some of the shite on the first batch. Haven't made it to the outtakes yet, but this bodes well for round two's demos... better equipment I imagine.

Mallory L . O'Donnell (That Bitch Camille), Monday, 7 August 2006 22:03 (seventeen years ago) link

Gah!

It's not immediately apparent that I'm talking about the Glove reissue. Haven't heard the others yet.

Mallory L . O'Donnell (That Bitch Camille), Monday, 7 August 2006 22:05 (seventeen years ago) link

Already, got all four.

Now i want those Disintegration, Wish, Wild Mood Swings, and Bloodflowers reissues now dammit... sigh, they're probably going to make us wait until December... of 2007.

dottie nuttie dach nach dtnt hhhhhhhh (donut), Tuesday, 8 August 2006 06:56 (seventeen years ago) link

*impatiently tapping fingers on desk, waiting for the post to deliver all of them, which I pre-ordered...*

BlastsOfStatic (BlastsofStatic), Tuesday, 8 August 2006 16:49 (seventeen years ago) link

they should redo the cover art for the bloodflowers reissue, I might like it better.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Wednesday, 9 August 2006 17:52 (seventeen years ago) link

I got all four sets this AM. It's sort of overwhelming. Overwhelmingly awesome... Did Head On The Door before lunch, just finishing The Top now. Saving the rest for tomorrow.

BlastsOfStatic (BlastsofStatic), Wednesday, 9 August 2006 18:20 (seventeen years ago) link

I still can't believe the local Best Buy doesn't have these at all. I'm going to see for myself tonight.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Wednesday, 9 August 2006 18:28 (seventeen years ago) link

According to the guy I talked to at my second Best Buy of the day, they aren't even planning on ordering them. None of the Chicago area stores even had them on the radar.

Finally found them at Border's.

jonviachicago (jonviachicago), Thursday, 10 August 2006 02:17 (seventeen years ago) link

Really? Even the mall Wherehouse Music down here in the ass-end of Alabama had all four, even the Glove album.

Telephonething (Telephonething), Thursday, 10 August 2006 02:26 (seventeen years ago) link

i haven't been able to find any either. weeeeeird.

Christopher Costello (CGC), Thursday, 10 August 2006 02:34 (seventeen years ago) link

I HAVE ALL FOUR OF THEM NYAH NYAH

Jesus Dan (Dan Perry), Thursday, 10 August 2006 02:36 (seventeen years ago) link

And fuck you too. Actually I did swing by my Best Buy tonight and their lying website aside, they DID have what I most specifically wanted, the Glove and The Top, so all is well. Tomorrow I'll get Kiss Me from the UCI-area store and order Head on the Door through them, so all is well.
