basically my criteria is if you want to go out and eat a not-terribly-obscure cuisine for dinner and have no where to do so, you do not live in a major city

pointy areas with small footprints are necessarily more 'urban' than flat areas with big footprints

let's say that only the cities that show up in Google Maps at this scale are major cities:

the map includes cities that are major for their region, but not at a national scale

Pittsburgh does excellent on culture, pretty good on industry, ethnic food, pizza, but we don't even have a direct intercontinental flight until next week and only patchy service west of the Mississippi. Not saying air transport is the be all and end all but it does tell that you can barely get anywhere south or west of us without flying east or north first

Prince of Persia (Ed), Tuesday, 26 May 2009 18:25 (fourteen years ago) link

What about Major North American cities?

•--• --- --- •--• (Pleasant Plains), Tuesday, 26 May 2009 18:26 (fourteen years ago) link

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_United_States_cities_by_population

maybe there's something to be said for population + density or something

^^^but i bet lots of people flying overseas from DC have to fly through NYC (just a wild guess) xpost

Mr. Que, Tuesday, 26 May 2009 18:27 (fourteen years ago) link

pittsburg has 3 sports teams = major american city

rip dom passantino 3/5/09 never forget (max), Tuesday, 26 May 2009 18:27 (fourteen years ago) link

hmm, i'd wager that direct flights is a good rubric

i like to fart and i am crazy (gbx), Tuesday, 26 May 2009 18:27 (fourteen years ago) link

clearly, but only two directs a day to the west coast?

I'll accept this is a major city if the Pens win the stanley cup.

Prince of Persia (Ed), Tuesday, 26 May 2009 18:28 (fourteen years ago) link

major league sports teams is how i define this

rip dom passantino 3/5/09 never forget (max), Tuesday, 26 May 2009 18:28 (fourteen years ago) link

guys: flights from other, major cities is like the googlebot way of figuring out if yr town is the real deal

more flights, more votes from ppl far away that yr actually major enough to merit visiting for pleasure or for business

2 sports teams and a AA baseball team

Mr. Que, Tuesday, 26 May 2009 18:29 (fourteen years ago) link

I do, according to both google maps and metropolitan-area-pop. definitions. Not so much according to do people in other countries know the name of my city definition.

nu hollywood (Eric H.), Tuesday, 26 May 2009 18:29 (fourteen years ago) link

maybe if you have a team in one of the four major sports you should make this list (i.e. sorry omaha, welcome to the club green bay)
