the la croix paranoia a few posts back is hilarious. that shit has been around forever - i remember seeing cans in college

LaCroix was introduced in 1981 by G. Heileman Brewing Company in La Crosse, Wisconsin as one of the first "Anti-Perrier" brands.[3] Meant to appeal to sparkling water consumers who were put off by Perrier's "snobbish positioning," LaCroix marketed to its niche by imaging itself as an "all occasion" beverage.[3] The beverage fared well in popularity and sales in the surrounding Midwest region for the following decade and by 1992, the brand was estimated to be worth $25 million.[4] However, in the same year, due to Heileman's admitted lack of experience outside the beer market, it was forced to sell the brand to National Beverage (then Winterbrook).[4]

polar forever tho

hal’s is pretty good

and i like the perrier slim cans

maura, Monday, 25 June 2018 10:31 (five years ago) link

Hal’s I only see in liter-sized plastic bottles
12 oz can is the ideal size / container material imho

Oh yeah LaCroix is ancient. Coincidentally we used to know a family in our town whose last name was LaCroix and they pronounced it just like the beverage too. (Unrelated afaik but similarly subject to Midwestern mis-pronunciation).

There's more Italy than necessary. (in orbit), Monday, 25 June 2018 15:54 (five years ago) link

my stance used to be that lacroix is poorly carbonated, inferior seltzer, which it still basically is but the mure pepino is good

I am a sparkling water princess and find Polar and LaCroix wanting. Bubble texture is inferior and taste is plain tap vs delicious and perfect Pellegrino.

Whole Foods Italian Sparkling is an adequate (and cheaper) Pellegrino alternative.

I don't do flavored water.

Ah see
I’m all about the flavors
Though I wonder what “natural essence” is and if it’s going to coalesce in my system and give me cancer down the road

calstars, Monday, 25 June 2018 17:00 (five years ago) link

yeah I don't like flavors in seltzer generally, just that one is good.

(all of this makes me come off really snobbish I realize but imo the perfect amount of carbonation is in regular old schweppes/canada dry)

i can only drink the polar liters! can't hang with cans

maura, Monday, 25 June 2018 23:19 (five years ago) link

Hahaha

I spotted the blueberry lemonade and pomegranate flavors, will check them out.

my dream flavor is rhubarb

calstars, Monday, 25 June 2018 23:36 (five years ago) link

best polar seasonal ever was fudge cheesecake, which tasted like a milk-free egg cream

strongly in the katherine camp re carbonation. my friend's office kitchen is stocked with lacroix unflavored and it always just seems like a defective flat batch.

It never even occurred to me to think about which seltzer has better bubbles. I don't know that I've ever actually had san p tho. Will try.

The Key Lime la croix is amazing just FYI but I normally reach for Polar.

Someone mentioned Rhubarb and while this isn't seltzer it is delicious:

Dat wuz me
Saw that at the store and almost picked it up but was put off by the apples - imagining a 80/20 apple / rhubarb split. But will try.

polar now has a 'ginger lime mule' flavor and it's REALLY good

this was a limited time one I guess and I miss it, it was the GOAT

ciderpress, Wednesday, 27 June 2018 15:45 (five years ago) link

yeah it was winter '18

maura, Wednesday, 27 June 2018 17:31 (five years ago) link

Finally getting around to the cartston rhubarb and as mentioned it’s not a seltzer. 23 grams of sugar. I think they could halve that but that’s just my taste. Anyway it’s delicious as is too. Love the ‘barb

"Vintage" brand seltzer is awful. Avoid at all costs.

I'm embarking on a Canada Dry vs. Schwepp's head to head and will report back.

seltzer in the new era

calstars, Sunday, 8 July 2018 20:37 (five years ago) link

just picked up a 'starfruit lemonade' flavor from polar - the seltzer flavor arms race is surely getting out of control

ciderpress, Monday, 9 July 2018 01:16 (five years ago) link

i don't even remember what starfruit is supposed to taste like! i will learn from the seltzer

three weeks pass...

Whole Fudz pushing this “Waterloo” stuff. Had the watermelon and it was good shit. Wonder why LC doesn’t have such a flavor

calstars, Friday, 3 August 2018 00:38 (five years ago) link

polar has strawberry watermelon in their permanent roster now which is solid

one year passes...

a good ad for Truly Hard Seltzer would be Kanye sitting around his ranch all depressed and frustrated, tweeting a bunch of garbage, working halfheartedly on some handwritten fonts, a tumbleweed rolls by, he sighs and jumps up and screams ENOUGH!!! and texts Dave Chappelle and Justin Bieber who immediately fly out on their private planes and show up at the ranch with a case of ice cold Trulies and then suddenly they're all having a blast, lollin', taking selfies, skateboarding and laying down tracks for Donda: With Child

and then it could be like, "Truly Hard Seltzer: here's to Truly good friends who don't nag you about taking your Seroquel like your nag wife!"
