What does the question really mean? "History has
erased them?" Are you all just naming bands you
don't like? Cause we all have our cherished bands
that no one else knows about.

squirl plise, Wednesday, 7 May 2003 00:45 (twenty-one years ago) link

it means 'who do you think might as well have never existed given the current musical climate seems to negate whatever influence (if any) they may have had at the time they were around'

stevem (blueski), Wednesday, 7 May 2003 01:24 (twenty-one years ago) link

I liked all the bands I named. Except Shakatak. Not sure I like Shakatak.

scattered order

electric sound of jim (electricsound), Wednesday, 7 May 2003 02:17 (twenty-one years ago) link

They were a sort of underground, arty/weird New Order from Down Under, international folks. Then there was Boxcar, who were sort of an overground New Order from Down Under.

The Hummingbirds.

colin s barrow (colin s barrow), Wednesday, 7 May 2003 02:19 (twenty-one years ago) link

Graham Coxon.

CharlieNo4 (Charlie), Wednesday, 7 May 2003 02:33 (twenty-one years ago) link

otm about the h'birds.

Boxcar had two really fantastic singles (fantastic mainly because they were shameless New Order facsimiles) and it was all a bit downhill from there.

electric sound of jim (electricsound), Wednesday, 7 May 2003 02:34 (twenty-one years ago) link

the Australian label Volition seems to have been wiped from history in almost its entirety.

we have the most redundant bands in the woooorld!

gaz (gaz), Wednesday, 7 May 2003 02:55 (twenty-one years ago) link

but those two haven't been quite as forgotten, what with both of them appearing on those recent compilations an' all.

electric sound of jim (electricsound), Wednesday, 7 May 2003 03:00 (twenty-one years ago) link

electric sound of jim (electricsound), Wednesday, 7 May 2003 03:08 (twenty-one years ago) link

Well, we've well and truly derailed this one...but, yeah, Lighthouse Keepers! I'm not sure if I should go. It might be a bit, y'know, sad.

Mc Hammer
Vanilla Ice

!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

What about Catatonia? It was only a few years ago they were pretty much ubiquitous, dominating the album and singles charts and the music press and now you'd be hard pressed to see any mention of them anywhere.

Matt DC (Matt DC), Wednesday, 7 May 2003 15:02 (twenty-one years ago) link

Matt -
it's been pretty well documented that Catatonia split during the Ppaer Scissors Stone release period due to Cerys's alcoholism and subsequent admission to a rehab clinic.
Now she's clean, sober and recently married.
Her new solo album 'Cock A Hoop' is imminent - and it's apparently a great record.

russ t, Wednesday, 7 May 2003 15:20 (twenty-one years ago) link

The Braids. Remember them? Jesus Christ they were shit...

Dom Passantino (Dom Passantino), Wednesday, 7 May 2003 15:37 (twenty-one years ago) link

What's the status of Hunters & Collectors? I don't think too many people know who they are right now, though if VH1 Classic becomes huge maybe more people will catch onto them (either for the first time or again). Certainly I feel like I'm the only person in my city who's a fan of theirs.

Maybe they're not completely forgotten, just slightly obscure. Hmmm.
