i own the vinyl. maybe i just had shitty mp3's (seems unlikely), but 'hireklon' has a LOT more going on percussively than on the cd-r i was listening to before...

the other tracks are identical. i've not done a side by side w/ 'true to myself', but my copy of that on mp3 was definitely fucked up (adbrupt cut off) so there's not much point.

five months pass...
he's very jazzy, isn't he??

vahid (vahid), Wednesday, 8 June 2005 17:28 (eighteen years ago) link

i am looking forward to lots of drum circles, windchimes and didgeridoo on the upcoming fabric mix.

vahid (vahid), Wednesday, 8 June 2005 17:32 (eighteen years ago) link

stop it, you!

Yakuza Ghost Six (nordicskilla), Wednesday, 8 June 2005 17:33 (eighteen years ago) link

In the vein of Harem being a "mini" LP, the remix of true to myself will be forty-five minutes.

vahid i have supported yr anti microhouse crusade...until now.

strng hlkngtn, Wednesday, 8 June 2005 18:58 (eighteen years ago) link

Several respected micro music lovers recommended this to me, but I never really got into it.

Spencer Chow (spencermfi), Wednesday, 8 June 2005 19:04 (eighteen years ago) link

Alcachofa?

Yakuza Ghost Six (nordicskilla), Wednesday, 8 June 2005 19:06 (eighteen years ago) link

Brilliant record.

Yakuza Ghost Six (nordicskilla), Wednesday, 8 June 2005 19:06 (eighteen years ago) link

???

vahid (vahid), Wednesday, 8 June 2005 19:22 (eighteen years ago) link

i really like this album! alcachofa too, although i thought it was less like an artichoke and more like some sort of prickly desert bush.

but seriously ...

ricardo's percussive talent is undisputed: the sophisticatedly elastic rhythm meanders of Latin American/Caribbean origin sound ... the tracks appear surprisingly volatile, despite the considerable playing times of several titles which are absolutely required for exhausting the free, rhythmic modulatons

he should form a group with pharoah sanders and osunlade!

vahid (vahid), Wednesday, 8 June 2005 19:24 (eighteen years ago) link

I am Pharoah Saunders' biggest fan.

Yakuza Ghost Six (nordicskilla), Wednesday, 8 June 2005 19:25 (eighteen years ago) link

and yet I cannot spell his name

Yakuza Ghost Six (nordicskilla), Wednesday, 8 June 2005 19:27 (eighteen years ago) link

I am going to listen to this Alcachofa again.

Spencer Chow (spencermfi), Wednesday, 8 June 2005 19:27 (eighteen years ago) link

recently i have made a turnaround and realized that the early section of taka taka (before claro intelecto comes in) is what i always wanted from microhouse and found lacking in labels like kompakt, poker flat, etc ... an understanding of spatialization that isn't ripped wholesale from 70s dub, truly new rhythmic signatures which take in "organic" rhythms but hint at more, too.

it's even more than what i always wanted from dj pica pica pica and nobukazu takemura - sounds like gamelan tapes played backwards at high speed, with the dj leaning on the mixing board with his elbows on the buttons marked "delay" and "pixilate".

has there really been anything like "taka taka" since? "button down mind" pt 2? i fear that falls into the same traps akufen fell into with his fabric mix, too many cartoon animal honking and farting, not enough of ricardo's sunbaked grace.

vahid (vahid), Wednesday, 8 June 2005 21:51 (eighteen years ago) link

Taka Taka IS good!

Yakuza Ghost Six (nordicskilla), Wednesday, 8 June 2005 21:52 (eighteen years ago) link

probably "superlongevity 3" would be a good place to start but i am seriously biased against unmixed compilations ... probably residual loathing after being so let down by the "famous when dead" comps, great tracks but oddly numbing when experienced in their full unmixed glory.

vahid (vahid), Wednesday, 8 June 2005 21:54 (eighteen years ago) link

adam if this keeps up soon you will be posting in monosyllabic grunts.

vahid (vahid), Wednesday, 8 June 2005 21:55 (eighteen years ago) link

yes!

vahid (vahid), Wednesday, 8 June 2005 21:57 (eighteen years ago) link

has there really been anything like "taka taka" since?

download one luciano set

fe zaffe (fezaffe), Wednesday, 8 June 2005 22:45 (eighteen years ago) link

vahid that description of taka taka is beautiful. i am going to go listen to it right now!

strng hlkngtn, Wednesday, 8 June 2005 22:48 (eighteen years ago) link

"sunbaked grace," ver' nice.
i can't think of anything else that comes close to that quality, really, vahid. (and totally with you on unmixed comps - i love the superlongevities, but only as tools... i'd never listen to the CD alone.)

philip sherburne (philip sherburne), Thursday, 9 June 2005 15:32 (eighteen years ago) link

hey philip, ver' nice yerself, yr mutek "month in techno" article is truly la rock 01.

Sell me Alcachofa vinyl. plz!

(Cozen, do you "do" mp3 cds?)

I'm bad and dirty and going to hell (nordicskilla), Monday, 27 June 2005 21:27 (eighteen years ago) link

I "receive" mp3 CDs.

I also "send" them.

I would sell you it but I'm about to buy a new turntable (uh after my new imac &c.)

c/n (Cozen), Monday, 27 June 2005 21:31 (eighteen years ago) link

I am also saving for a turntable but...

I don't even have SPEAKERS in my house.

ILM can flog me now!

nine years pass...

Do any of you have the vinyl version of Alcachofa? Is it just me or is it intentional for the 4 sides to switch rpm when you flip sides? It's very annoying.

Moka, Wednesday, 30 July 2014 06:45 (nine years ago) link

It's also disorienting I swear dexter and easy lee sound slower than my mp3 versions but it might just be my ears.

Side A and C are definitely 33rpm and side B and D 45rpm but it doesn't have any info on why would they do this.

Moka, Wednesday, 30 July 2014 06:49 (nine years ago) link

Yeah it is (annoying and intentional). The sides w one track're 45, those w two 33. Took me a few weeks to notice/look into this myself

sonic thedgehod (albvivertine), Wednesday, 30 July 2014 06:50 (nine years ago) link

Ok I've had it for a few years now and noticed immediatly but assumed it was intentional. No idea why. I guess he just thought it would be fun for trolling vinyl djs or something like that.

Moka, Wednesday, 30 July 2014 06:54 (nine years ago) link

It's cos it means he gets 45 quality sound where he can, I guess

sonic thedgehod (albvivertine), Wednesday, 30 July 2014 06:55 (nine years ago) link

Oh yeah it's 3 vinyls. Didn't realize that the speed changed depending on the number of tracks per side... That's interesting. It might help me next time I play it but it is still annoying.

Moka, Wednesday, 30 July 2014 06:56 (nine years ago) link

Frm memory that rule applies to everything of his, I got p anal abt checking all my Villalobos LPs/12s out after that (also once had sex to the incorrectly slow Easy Lee, which ws kinda creepy)

sonic thedgehod (albvivertine), Wednesday, 30 July 2014 06:58 (nine years ago) link

He also tends to have different tracks between cd and vinyl and it's somewhere between cool and annoying. In this particular album it annoys me because he left out YGH out of the vinyl version and it's nowhere else to be found in vinyl format. Also some of my favorite tracks were only released on the cd version (waiworinao, fools garden and what you say) and the exclusive tracks on vinyl aren't as good as those.

Moka, Wednesday, 30 July 2014 07:08 (nine years ago) link

I would have loved to have waiworinao or what you say instead of "i try to live" which is the only track in the album which I don't care for at all.

Specially mad about the exclusion of waiworinao as it's one of the highlights in here besides dexter and easy lee.

Moka, Wednesday, 30 July 2014 07:15 (nine years ago) link

Oh wait that's not what you meant, sorry. No sign of YGH as you obv know

sonic thedgehod (albvivertine), Wednesday, 30 July 2014 07:26 (nine years ago) link

Yeah I know they are in there I would just prefer to have the same album and the extra tracks on an ep.

YGH is not in there btw!

Moka, Wednesday, 30 July 2014 07:28 (nine years ago) link

in my world of young dance music vinyl, having one side 45 with one track and one side 33 with two tracks is a pretty standard move and hardly some unique trolling exercise by mr villalobos

Tim F, Thursday, 31 July 2014 00:13 (nine years ago) link

it's certainly not unusual and as mentioned upthread is to do with maximising volume on each side depending on the length. unless you have an incredibly high end turntable, it's not really that much hassle to change the speed as you change sides, is it?

stirmonster, Thursday, 31 July 2014 01:11 (nine years ago) link

Are the 45 sides the ones more likely to be played out? That'd also make sense.
