I loved Go

Dan S, Thursday, 4 April 2019 23:47 (five years ago) link

Grimes is starting to feel like a stain in my life.

✖✖✖ (Moka), Friday, 5 April 2019 03:01 (five years ago) link

some of y'all have fascinating ideas of what constitutes "poppy"

recriminations from the nitpicking woke (Alfred, Lord Sotosyn), Friday, 5 April 2019 03:13 (five years ago) link

When set against most types of music that exist on earth, it does slant rather heavily towards pop. Not much of a margin of error there, really.

pomenitul, Friday, 5 April 2019 09:30 (five years ago) link

Art Angels still mostly rules and she spent the whole promo cycle talking about how she loved pop music and wanted to make something influenced by the pop music she loves so idk what she's on about when she now says she didn't try to make a pop album

this is the least surprising thing in that interview -- it's the musician's stock answer for "album right after a newer-poppier-direction album that underperformed by someone's metrics"

like, I’m eating an elephant head (katherine), Friday, 5 April 2019 12:48 (five years ago) link

Still feels odd she doesn’t seem to have affection for an album with so many great tracks.

Trϵϵship, Friday, 5 April 2019 13:02 (five years ago) link

Maybe she’s just on to the next thing and that’s a good attitude—who knows

Trϵϵship, Friday, 5 April 2019 13:06 (five years ago) link

how do you feel about your greatest hits of posts to ilx? sure you post em again for the fans, but your heart's moved on.

say it with sausages (Sufjan Grafton), Friday, 5 April 2019 16:10 (five years ago) link

I never went pop though

Trϵϵship, Friday, 5 April 2019 16:14 (five years ago) link

james franco was your pop moment, complete with fans and your own disavowal upon return to earnest treeship

That sock wasn’t even that bad. He just said “cool it”

Trϵϵship, Friday, 5 April 2019 16:24 (five years ago) link

Also so long ago—who knows who it was?

“I just wish I could make music in a vacuum,” she claims

there is a video of ilx user imago doing a performance of bohemian rhapsody with a vacuum cleaner

findom haddie (jim in vancouver), Friday, 5 April 2019 17:39 (five years ago) link

reference to an ill-advised video imago made some years back

xp!

Emperor Tonetta Ketchup (sleeve), Friday, 5 April 2019 17:39 (five years ago) link

but how can something be ill-advised if it well remembered, didn't harm anyone (except for some performance-related wear and tear on the vacuum) and sparks joy years later?

Karl Malone, Friday, 5 April 2019 17:40 (five years ago) link

i agree

findom haddie (jim in vancouver), Friday, 5 April 2019 17:40 (five years ago) link

That sounds amazing. Link?

pomenitul, Friday, 5 April 2019 17:41 (five years ago) link

i'll webmail it to you, don't want to post it

findom haddie (jim in vancouver), Friday, 5 April 2019 17:41 (five years ago) link

ok maybe I'm confusing it with some other post of his that got reposted elsewhere or something?

Emperor Tonetta Ketchup (sleeve), Friday, 5 April 2019 17:41 (five years ago) link

'Tis a thing of beauty, thanks jim.

pomenitul, Friday, 5 April 2019 17:45 (five years ago) link

making music with a vacuum versus making beautiful music in a vacuum iirc

mh, Friday, 5 April 2019 17:50 (five years ago) link

Either way, nature abhors it.

Banaka-lite heel turn:

“I thought people understood that I ultimately probably believe in an AI dictatorship. I mean, I don’t think humanity is going to survive anyway. We’re fucked. I think AI is the natural evolution. It’s just like we killed the fucking Neanderthals, and now they’re going to kill us. I don’t think democracy really works.“

Conceptualize Wyverns (latebloomer), Wednesday, 17 April 2019 04:12 (five years ago) link

that's a kind of amazing quote

Dan S, Wednesday, 17 April 2019 04:16 (five years ago) link

don't know about "I thought people understood..."

I read the whole thing and gotta say — “AI dictatorship” quote aside (and even that may be “ironic”) — she makes her case well and comes off pretty good to me.

”Seriously, fuck the New Yorker,” she says, growing agitated. She makes unwavering eye contact. “Fuck the New York Times. Fuck Vice.

Awesome final sentence in that quote

flappy bird, Wednesday, 17 April 2019 05:04 (five years ago) link

The best part of the movie is the Joker.

oh fuck yeah

flappy bird, Wednesday, 17 April 2019 05:30 (five years ago) link

Seems like she’s being pretty real here; talking about how even her parents preferred her earlier stuff, etc.

It’s that rare kind of interview where an artist who’s “fallen out of grace” with fans and the media assesses the situation and talks about their next move.

get your hand outta my pocket universe (morrisp), Wednesday, 17 April 2019 05:37 (five years ago) link

Yeah if you’re gonna make fanboys cry by revealing you’re a Tory you might as well do it in a corny Leto joker bit

mumsnet blvd (wins), Wednesday, 17 April 2019 05:39 (five years ago) link

I must be in the minority here as I loved the interview and still appreciate her as an artist and human?

Also like her take on AI and her neanderthal analogy. However, it's also good to reflect on Kurzweil's more utopian vision of post singularity life to balance out her dystopian one.

octobeard, Wednesday, 17 April 2019 07:19 (five years ago) link

it's worth remembering that Kurzweil is a clueless idiot of the highest calibre, though.

an incoherent crustacean (MatthewK), Wednesday, 17 April 2019 07:47 (five years ago) link

A scandal, tailor-made for ILM. Pretty sure it's a conspiracy at this point.

pomenitul, Wednesday, 17 April 2019 08:30 (five years ago) link

“Dark is going to be my main alter ego,” she says. “It’s visually the best thing I’ve ever come up with. Everyone is very tired of me making metal and screamo and stuff, so that can just be Dark.”

Who is very tired of her making metal and screamo?

“Twitter. Fans. Honestly, my parents. I came out making beautiful, ethereal, chill synth music and I do still really like that, I just don’t like being pigeonholed so I had to react against it for a minute. Now I’m back to it. I honestly think Shall I Compare Thee is kind of Visions-y.”

She pauses to take a sip of her coffee, and it occurs to me that the more I listen to Boucher the more I realise she is talking to me above a background roar. The deafening cacophony of voices on the internet pulling apart every aspect of her music, her politics and her personal life is always there whether she engages with it or not.

more power to you but this sort of thing is far too dark and twisted for me!!

“If there’s nothing left to lose, that’s actually a really fun idea to me. I think it has freed me artistically. The best part of the movie is the Joker"
