kind of got the stark gene for being guileless and gullible in a noble manner

trying to decide who are bigger douches: the dudes that run the show or ppl who write for gawker media idk

like i give anti-fucks about what someone writing for deadspin thinks ... would rather read about what plebeian job in Westeros I would have based on my astrological sign

it's interesting to me that *this* is the episode where consensus has really congealed against the show, against the writers. as a grumbling non-fan it seemed fine! not great, but ok, certainly more direct and clear and about-something than a lot of the show has been.

Didn't this happen last week? Last week's ep was objectively much worse than this one.

i think the internet furore will be higher from this ep because a lot of people like the character of dany and apparently haven't noticed the telegraphing of "she is bad" the last few eps

For a lot of people it happened last season when they went zombie hunting beyond the wall. In Nerd-dom it seemingly congealed when their Night King theories didn't pan out.

xpost tbf last season she seemed pretty bad too

Muswell Hillbilly Elegy (President Keyes), Monday, 13 May 2019 20:10 (four years ago) link

as i mentioned upthread I'm a dumbass and am watching the earlier seasons for the first time while watching these final episodes and her thirst of power and, at least rhetorical, willingness to use very destructive methods to gain it are apparent. but the last few episodes they've really ratcheted up the whole "she's thirsty for power, she is envious of the love of the northerners for jon snow, she's going to be the baddie now"

findom haddie (jim in vancouver), Monday, 13 May 2019 20:14 (four years ago) link

episode was exciting in a way, but i agree about so many of the stupid inconsistencies. whatever ways it was foreshadowed it ultimately came across like dany decided in a split-second to torch the entire city based on a sort of emotional wobble of some kind.

like others said it was funny how this week crossbows are shit and dragons are once again awesome and indestructible. like to an extent in other episodes it seemed like the dragon can breathe fire and then has to have a little rest after a sort of your deodorant in the morning length of spray. whereas this episode it was more like a powerhose or fertilising crops.

i didn't get how jaime went from being basically dead to 'oh it's just a scratch', was he meant to be pretending?

another bit that was stupid and funny was when there was the shot of masses of citizens, all clothed in various shades of brown and beige and then jaime, arya and the hound were camouflaging themselves in in DARK BLACK HOODS.

xpost her biggest other trait was surely determination that the little people don't get subjugated.

FernandoHierro, Monday, 13 May 2019 20:17 (four years ago) link

IDK that deadspin rewrite idea that gbx posted would've been a better series of events imo. Lots of recent episodes would have been much stronger with similarly not-so-major rewrites. So I don't think all the grievances are entirely just nerds raging that their preferred fanfic story board didn't pan out. The truth is in between.

All the GoT "content" is exhausting overall for sure.

Emotional wobble are you sure?
She was fckn pissed off for a lot of reasons.

lefal junglist platton (wtev), Monday, 13 May 2019 20:29 (four years ago) link

yeah but the scene before it happened implied a split-second decision.

another funny bit was when varys said 'they say when a targaryen is born the gods flip a coin' and jon was like 'i've got no time for riddles!'

FernandoHierro, Monday, 13 May 2019 20:31 (four years ago) link

Yeah this was a deeply stupid episode but I did like some stuff in it, which I’ll come to.

Show Dany is a bit weird because she’s older than book Dany, who is 13 & makes a lot of decisions of the kind you’d expect of an undereducated 13 year old. Which sort of clashes with her being older in the show when they don’t really change stuff.

I thought it was fairly obvious that they were going to do the whole Mad Queen thing but I didn’t like the way they did it. I mean, there’s tons of people out there saying “oh I knew she was ~crazy since she didn’t care her brother died” or whatever. Honestly.

It needed more time. It needed better writing and probably better acting too. It doesn’t really make any sense the way it played out in this episode and there’s a lot of people rationalising it cos they just didn’t like Dany ¯\_(ツ)_/¯

Jon Snow is boring and useless, show AND books. He’s not going to end up on the throne either. Honestly, I think the appeal he has for tons of people is his bloodline and he’s a man. That’s it, there’s so many more interesting characters.

I loved Varys going out. I love Varys show and books and Conleth Hill was such a great cast for him. I loved when he just slid his rings off as he heard the footsteps approaching, that was a great detail.

I’m always surprised and pleased they let Davos live this long, he’s the best <3

The tracking shots they did with Arya were stunning and I loved the claustrophobic feel of her attempts to escape the city. Absolute lol at that white horse though.

The music, loved.

Also loved the twins going out - even though it was extremely stupid! Cersei sent Bronn after Jaime (was it literally last episode?!). Mainly liked it because it calls back to Cersei saying they’d leave the world together. Stupid, stupid but I could see this ending for them (although I prefer the valonquar theory).

Tyrion is just all over the place, but Peter Dinklage is just so good I can’t be annoyed about it. I’ve always really liked scenes with the Lannister siblings & the one between Tyrion and Jaime was good (although again, stupid).

I’ve hated show Euron so much, thank God he’s finally dead.

I loved the Hound saying “fucking die!” That whole fight scene was...whelming.

But yeah, I feel like nobody will be happy with the ending, and not in a grimdark way either.

gyac, Monday, 13 May 2019 20:32 (four years ago) link

It seemed to me that Jon's "I've got no time for riddles" was more along the lines of "so are you telling me you've turned against the queen?" than "I do not understand what those words mean".

trishyb, Monday, 13 May 2019 20:34 (four years ago) link

yeah maybe - i chose to interpret it as jon being dumb.

it was cool seeing the mountain's weird head.

yes, this was great. i especially liked his expression of patrician disgust when Tyrion takes his hand at the end.

goole, Monday, 13 May 2019 20:37 (four years ago) link

the scene with varys/conleth hill talking about the magician who made him a eunuch is prob one of, if not my favourite pieces of acting in the whole show.

sorry, someone shot a crossbow at my grammar

FernandoHierro, Monday, 13 May 2019 20:39 (four years ago) link

Btw, Tyrion was a terrible Hand and most of the advice he gave Daenerys was awful.

xps to FH - YES, he was suitably grotesque!

FernandoHierro, Monday, 13 May 2019 20:42 (four years ago) link

none of this shit really bothers me at all. I think the only thing that would bug me now would be if they killed off Arya which it's pretty obvious they're not going to do now.

akm, Monday, 13 May 2019 20:43 (four years ago) link

nice bit of jon snow being a dumbass in this ep was when varys says the "when a targaryen is born the gods flip a coin.." and jon says "we don't go much for riddles where I'm from"

i read that more as him trying to pretend he didn't just hear Varys say a bunch of treasonous things and also having to get out of confirming something Varys shouldn't know in the first place.

qyburn getting tossed away like a ragdoll was p funny. ironic that just when a big crossbow could have saved him, he did not have one. rip.

lol xpost

Could’ve been more headbursty, you expect certain standards from the Mountain. Qyburn has been really good too, incredibly creepy and awful.

gyac, Monday, 13 May 2019 20:46 (four years ago) link

oh I guess I enjoyed Euron just strolling out the sea at that precise moment also

Number None, Monday, 13 May 2019 20:47 (four years ago) link

Also extremely funny as everyone said that Euron hit Rhaegal in motion but about a million huge crossbows couldn’t bring down Drogon. Def some stormtrooper aiming going on there.

gyac, Monday, 13 May 2019 20:47 (four years ago) link

Jon should have been smart and said "actually, god flips many coins whenever anyone is born, Varys. it's called genetics. bazinga!"

that jon/varys bit reminded me a bit of homer and dr hibbard. 'we're going to cut you open and tinker with your ticker."

FernandoHierro, Monday, 13 May 2019 20:51 (four years ago) link

Also why would Euron give a damn about killing Jaime when he killed a dragon

gyac, Monday, 13 May 2019 20:53 (four years ago) link

so outside of fan service what was the point with brienne and jaimie hooking up unless she's pregnant, oh wait nevermind

So he could call himself King "King-Slayer" Slayer.

Jamie's probably been the most ill-served character by the show's writers (and that's saying something)

Number None, Monday, 13 May 2019 20:56 (four years ago) link

I don’t think this, because I never really bought his “redemption arc”, book or show. He strives for goodness, but he can do good things while still being a bastard.

I 100% laughed at him saying “Cersei always said I was the stupidest Lannister”, though.

gyac, Monday, 13 May 2019 20:58 (four years ago) link

I cannot imagine his arc concluding (lol) like this in the books though

he's definitely killing Cersei for one thing

Number None, Monday, 13 May 2019 21:02 (four years ago) link

100%, but he’s probably crying as he does it
