Speaking of Breaking Bad, I guess Bryan Cranston just posted something about Aaron Paul that said "soon..." or something, and the radio DJs were going nuts.

Random observation when re-watching: for as prominent as Littlefinger was in the all the intrigue of the earlier seasons, it's odd how no one ever remarked on his death. One would think at least Varys would have a comment.

blatherskite, Wednesday, 26 June 2019 23:40 (four years ago) link

Varys kinda forgot etc

I kinda feel like Bran would not have given six fux what anyone called him as he wasnt really all there anymore anyway.

Don't know why anyone would be so keen on always having one concentrated theme/big idea to hang an entire story on. Doesn't work for every kind of story and I'd like to think most writers don't think in this way when writing.

Robert Adam Gilmour, Friday, 28 June 2019 20:50 (four years ago) link

overarching themes don't have to be consciously constructed by the writer, the reader draws them out.

Personally I'm not interested in engaging in a work that doesn't have anything to say - where I can't detect any ideas to keep me engaged or interested - where there's just this empty formal exercise going on.

Οὖτις, Friday, 28 June 2019 21:32 (four years ago) link

Fans could put any number of overarching themes on Game Of Thrones.

I very much doubt anyone could find a convincing overarching theme for everything they love. They generally end up so vague and general as to be useless.

And it depends what you mean by "something to say" because I generally prefer things that don't have a very deliberate thing to say.

this thread has failed on that count imo

I probably wouldn't find most of the takes convincing or at all useful.

I often find that when people try to describe these type of big ideas behind their favorite thing, they come across a bit dishonest, like they're flattering themselves and describing something very different to the thing they actually enjoyed. Although the big theme doesn't necessarily have to be the thing they enjoyed about it.

Robert Adam Gilmour, Friday, 28 June 2019 22:04 (four years ago) link

don't even know where to start with that...

Οὖτις, Friday, 28 June 2019 22:29 (four years ago) link

Let’s just cut to the chase. The big theme tgat everybody loved but refuses to talk about was gratuitous nudity

i will never make a typo ever again (Karl Malone), Friday, 28 June 2019 22:33 (four years ago) link

for me it was the incest

sometimes all in the same scene! truly it was a magical era of television.

Οὖτις, Friday, 28 June 2019 22:37 (four years ago) link

don't think there was any nudity in series 8? someone should make a graph.

mfktz (Camaraderie at Arms Length), Friday, 28 June 2019 22:44 (four years ago) link

Bronn in the brothel with 3 women - scene was pretty much the writers going lol remember how much we used to do stuff like this

nashwan, Friday, 28 June 2019 22:46 (four years ago) link

oh yeah, forgot that scene as it was so out of place. last nude named character was quite a while back, surely?

mfktz (Camaraderie at Arms Length), Friday, 28 June 2019 22:48 (four years ago) link

this season *almost* Arya and later Brienne
