What one piece of advice would you give your thirty year old self?

I don't think it's possible to have a good time, all the time.

My advice to myself would be:

Have the nerve to keep going and play your role, despite the imposter syndrome, the paralysis of fear and uncertainty, and the inevitable fuck ups. Life is surprising - some of the things you think you'll enjoy, you end up hating, and some disasters turn out to be positive overall. Experience it in all its variety - and don't get too obsessed on any one event and try not to end up embittered.

cosign. also ADHD is a thing, you have it, and you need to get it diagnosed.

also enjoy the footy. Fergie retires soon and then it'll be years of mediocrity.

Also, exercise regularly and cut out those terrible eating habits, because metabolism slowdown in your 30s is a real thing and gets worse with that new job you got at 31 that involves sitting in an office 8 hours a day.

The variety of these is very good.

I forgot to add the other thing I’d say to myself: make a list of the things you really want to do (large scale and small), and just start doing it. The years you can waste in suspended animation...

- quit the band that makes you unhappy, especially as it’s meant to be fun.

- do something about the depression you think you have under control.

- listen properly to your partner.

- be more sociable.

I used to think about what advice I'd give my younger self. I don't think I have any advice for that person anymore. I don't know what I could tell them that they would listen to and take in the way that I would intend it. I think probably I would show up and listen and say "That sounds hard" at appropriate junctures and my younger self would probably start off by yelling at me and at some point they would cry or almost-cry and I'd probably give them a hug. If I said anything at all it would be perhaps "You are a good person, you are stronger than you think you are right now, and you deserve better than this."

I don't know if that would make a difference either but it's my fantasy, right?

Do some exercise, srsly, just a bit: go swimming occasionally or even try jogging; it's just half an hour out of your lying on the couch drinking beer time.

This. My company just laid off a 10 year employee the week after her anniversary. I am nearing my 15th, and my salary dwarfs the rest of the dept as i am the most senior member. I know i am next.

Thirty year olds have unlimited access to a massive buffet of all the platitudes they can eat. The problem is knowing which ones will best apply to their own situation, in order to avoid the stress, pain and heartaches that are headed their way.
