I was thinking about this over the weekend and was wondering whether, if you mapped all the chart-friendly female singers, Dido would appear in the middle, the bland spot. I don't know what to label the axes but here's the idea:

Alfie (Alfie), Monday, 9 February 2004 11:32 (twenty years ago) link

Interesting... where does Ms Dynamite fit on that?

Enrique (Enrique), Monday, 9 February 2004 11:37 (twenty years ago) link

Are you including the jazz-lite laydeez on this graph, then? Where does Amy Nelly Furtado Winehouse sit on this bitch?

Liz :x (Liz :x), Monday, 9 February 2004 11:41 (twenty years ago) link

Katie Melua should be on the opposite side, between Dido and Eva. I'd add Delta Goodrem just above Amy Studt and to the right. I guess POP is the top left corner, AOR the top right, jazz the low right and YOR the low left?

stevem (blueski), Monday, 9 February 2004 11:44 (twenty years ago) link

Winehouse would probably be below Norah Jones but nearer Frou Frou?

stevem (blueski), Monday, 9 February 2004 11:46 (twenty years ago) link

Julio, Chris is OTM, but for what it's worth I'd be very tempted to start a music thread on ILE because a) most of the people I like and respect are on here and b) I'm sure anything and everything that could possibly be said about an artist has already been said on ILM and I'd rather avoid either crushing condescension or a series of snippy "look at this thread" answers.

Markelby (Mark C), Monday, 9 February 2004 11:47 (twenty years ago) link

A male version of this would be interesting. Please plot:

Will Young
Craig David
Daniel Bedingfield
Lemar
David Gray
Gary Jules

stevem (blueski), Monday, 9 February 2004 11:47 (twenty years ago) link

Phil Collins is dead centre, obviously, with David Gray a little to the left. Craig David is way off the map.

Matt DC (Matt DC), Monday, 9 February 2004 11:58 (twenty years ago) link

She has that girl next door image.

Obviously not next door to me because she's not a hairy black man with a broken car.

MikeyG (MikeyG), Monday, 9 February 2004 12:03 (twenty years ago) link

Girl next door if you live in Archway, or something.

Enrique (Enrique), Monday, 9 February 2004 12:04 (twenty years ago) link

What are the axes of that graph, where would PJ Harvey, Diamanda Galas or Shirley Bassey fit on it?

Billy Dods (Billy Dods), Monday, 9 February 2004 12:24 (twenty years ago) link

Dido is odd in that she has gone from being extremely annoying to the sort of person you can ignore. When she first came out & J0 Whiley would not shut up about how great No Angel was & I just thought, wtf? IS that it? Nowadays, I can really ignore her music without getting bothered. I don't even hate it. I even sing to it sometimes in the car, but I'd never buy any of her stuff.

Pinkpanther (Pinkpanther), Monday, 9 February 2004 12:25 (twenty years ago) link

That raises another spectre, pinky. Jo Whiley - has she stopped fancying herself as Voice of the Alternative, then? People like her and Mark Goodier who can just turn on and off enthusiasm for a genre etc. at will - they have no place in any kind of specialist music.

But yeah - this thread seems to indicate a total absense of rage. Strange.

Markelby (Mark C), Monday, 9 February 2004 12:36 (twenty years ago) link

''If you look at the thread it's not strictly a music thread''

there has been no comprehensive musicological analysis of Dido's songs the last time I checked a dido thread on ILM.

''b) I'm sure anything and everything that could possibly be said about an artist has already been said on ILM''

news to me.

Julio Desouza (jdesouza), Monday, 9 February 2004 12:40 (twenty years ago) link

I always really rated her tbh, but now when she constantly plugs bands like the darkness, I have to wonder. I think all of the day time bands are more conformist, certianly on radio1. Sara C0x plays some hip hop & dance, but nothing that's not on the playlist or in the charts. J0 Whiley loves bands, that everyone seems to love. Mark & Lard will always be great imo & I love the way they take the piss out of new songs & are honest if they like a new song. You believe them because you know how great & varied their music tastes are. Chris M0yles, well he has the worst music taste. I remember hearing him completely slate Missy Elliot, i mean wtf, does this guy know anything about music at all?

Pinkpanther (Pinkpanther), Monday, 9 February 2004 12:42 (twenty years ago) link

x-post - response to Mark.

Pinkpanther (Pinkpanther), Monday, 9 February 2004 12:42 (twenty years ago) link

Julio if it bothers you so much I'm sure Mark won't mind if you go and start exactly the same thread on ILM.

Matt DC (Matt DC), Monday, 9 February 2004 12:43 (twenty years ago) link

Julio, be my guest! I'm sure you and your fellow music lovers will find many and varied fascinating comments and debates arise.

Markelby (Mark C), Monday, 9 February 2004 12:46 (twenty years ago) link

Jo Whiley - has she stopped fancying herself as Voice of the Alternative, then? People like her and Mark Goodier who can just turn on and off enthusiasm for a genre etc. at will - they have no place in any kind of specialist music.

Is there any suggestion that Jo Whiley has stopped liking indie music just because she likes Dido too? Is this a sixth form common room from 1987?

N. (nickdastoor), Monday, 9 February 2004 12:47 (twenty years ago) link

yr 'total absence of rage' is not 'snippy' at all right?

Julio Desouza (jdesouza), Monday, 9 February 2004 12:50 (twenty years ago) link

Jo Whiley has a daughter called India. That's how credible she is.

MikeyG (MikeyG), Monday, 9 February 2004 12:52 (twenty years ago) link

India than thou!

N. (nickdastoor), Monday, 9 February 2004 12:53 (twenty years ago) link

Should have called her Kylie.

MikeyG (MikeyG), Monday, 9 February 2004 12:53 (twenty years ago) link

Actually if her middle names really were 'than thou' that would be totally awesome.

N. (nickdastoor), Monday, 9 February 2004 12:54 (twenty years ago) link

Julio, ppl are right to be scared, it's a fucking freak-fest out there on ILM.

Enrique OTM

and I'd rather avoid either crushing condescension or a series of snippy "look at this thread" answers.

Mark so OTM it isn't even funny. ILM is just...weird.

Jesus, multiple crossposts, you guys are typing waaay too fast today

Matt (Matt), Monday, 9 February 2004 12:54 (twenty years ago) link

I do like J0 Whiley, but due to the nature of her radio prog she cannot play the type of music that she once might have played on her prog with steve lamacq.

Pinkpanther (Pinkpanther), Monday, 9 February 2004 12:54 (twenty years ago) link

NO SELL OUT

N. (nickdastoor), Monday, 9 February 2004 12:56 (twenty years ago) link

Steve Lamacq is a good example of what happens if you listen to too much indie music. Lack of vitamin C mainly.

MikeyG (MikeyG), Monday, 9 February 2004 12:56 (twenty years ago) link

no he gets vit c from the cider!!

Pinkpanther (Pinkpanther), Monday, 9 February 2004 12:59 (twenty years ago) link

I think he def. needs to drink more cider then. Last time I saw him he looked like Gollum.

Ricardo (RickyT), Monday, 9 February 2004 13:17 (twenty years ago) link

he has the nose/chin snog action approaching fast too.

chris (chris), Monday, 9 February 2004 13:18 (twenty years ago) link

Ewwww indie face implosion!

(Like the Jon Spencer Blues Explosion only greasier)

Liz :x (Liz :x), Monday, 9 February 2004 13:21 (twenty years ago) link

and whinier

Matt (Matt), Monday, 9 February 2004 13:22 (twenty years ago) link

She drives me bonkers with her utter blandness. I've had oatmeal and wheat germ with more kick. Boiled water has more flavor. She has absolutely NO personality, it's like she's making her name do all the work for her.
The only interesting thing about her is she had Angel in her last video, and I'm sure that wasn't her idea. What are her songs even about? Are they about anything? I can hum the tune for white flag but I'm fucked if I know what she's singing about.

Catty (Catty), Monday, 9 February 2004 13:39 (twenty years ago) link

Well, basically she's finished with some d00d but now she wants back, but he seems to have a chick, or maybe is just like 'step off,' and she isn't backing down, I think.

Enrique (Enrique), Monday, 9 February 2004 13:41 (twenty years ago) link

Mary's Gone to India is about her mate Mary going to India. She nicks Mary's boyfriend. Well, she alludes to anyway.

She also misses the opportunity of rhyming Mary with hairy. Oversight, I guess.

MikeyG (MikeyG), Monday, 9 February 2004 13:59 (twenty years ago) link

How about scary?

Pete (Pete), Monday, 9 February 2004 14:02 (twenty years ago) link

Pessary?

Alfie (Alfie), Monday, 9 February 2004 14:03 (twenty years ago) link

The boyfriend is called Jim. From what I can see, purely for the purpose of this rhyme:

"Jim's in the garden, he looks like Bin Laden, but without the beard."

Mary's In India Lyrics

Danny is lonely cos Mary's in India now
She said she'd call but that was three weeks ago
She left all her things well, her books and her letters from him
And as the sun rises on Mary, it sets on him

Just dance, just drink and just see the things I probably never get a chance to see

Danny's not eating, he's drinking and sleeping in
I saw him last night at a party, he's definitely thin
He says he's happy, he looked pretty good but I think
That as the sun rises on Mary, it sets on him
Just dance, just drink and just see the things I probably never get the chance to say

Danny came over last night and I cooked for him
We talked about you Mary and how much we loved you still
He told me he's packed up your books and your letters and things
And as the sun sets on Mary, it's rising on him
And we danced and we drank and I've seen some things
you probably never got the chance to see
Don't worry, Mary cos I'm taking care of Danny
And he's taking care of me

Pete (Pete), Monday, 9 February 2004 14:09 (twenty years ago) link

Maybe it works better 'in context'. Like my g/f and I died laughing reading some Kate Bush lyrics yesterday, but we still dig the songs.

Enrique (Enrique), Monday, 9 February 2004 14:11 (twenty years ago) link

Truely heartbreaking. Danny is so lonely.

MikeyG (MikeyG), Monday, 9 February 2004 14:14 (twenty years ago) link

(I've been trying to add a Z axis, so we can add another variable but it just becomes unfathomable.)

Alfie (Alfie), Monday, 9 February 2004 14:14 (twenty years ago) link

brilliant!

Enrique (Enrique), Monday, 9 February 2004 14:15 (twenty years ago) link

Ah but whither Beverly Knight? Or for that matter, Betty Boo?

Matt (Matt), Monday, 9 February 2004 14:18 (twenty years ago) link

Where is r&b/urban on this. Surely that should be one of the axes.

Pete (Pete), Monday, 9 February 2004 14:19 (twenty years ago) link

Actually, Alicia Keys is so necesary here.

Enrique (Enrique), Monday, 9 February 2004 14:19 (twenty years ago) link

Best clam down though, or all we'll end up with is some nifty cross-hatching with the words...ii ..ino..u.e vaguely visible

Matt (Matt), Monday, 9 February 2004 14:26 (twenty years ago) link

Ok, suggestions for the axes please.
Average age of target audience (as Steve put it: AOR to YOR)
