Last year my sister and I were strolling through central Paris, opposite Les Invalides, when we spotted a man and his wee boy fishing. "Losers," I sneered. "There's nothing in there."

A few seconds later the line pulled taut and his rod bent double. We watched the dad struggle for the next five minutes as he reeled in his catch. Unbelievably, it was a monster fish. They took turns trying to hold it right (spilling out of their arms either side) while the other struggled with their camera. It was such a beautiful moment that it couldn't be right that there shouldn't be a father-and-son snap, so I ran down the ramp to take their photo for them. I regret so much not taking one of my own, otherwise I'd have posted it here.

The very best thing about it was the father's face. He reacted like a cartoon character, grimacing as he drew it in, his jaw dropping when he saw the fish, slapping his forehead as he weighed it, etc. I half-expected steam to come out of his ears and his eyes to spring out on stalks.

here is a picture of me holding a fish that i caught. it's kind of small compared to most of the fish on this thread. i caught a much larger bluefish the next day but i didn't have a camera. they have big teeth.

My son got an inordinate amount of joy from catching fish over the summer even little ones like that. Ahhh. Unless of course, you're a fish.

On a related note, I just read this:

"The male giant squid has to use a puny 15-gram brain to coordinate 150 kilograms of weight, 10 metres of length and a 1.5-metre-long penis... He physically plunges this penis into the female's arms, which are rather unfortunately right next to her beak. Because he is coordinating so much with so little, I think occasionally bits get chewed off when they inadvertently get too close to the beak."

O_O

hi there. gormless look on face due to catching personal best carp (25lb) after a 3/4 hour fight (very snaggy water) and being a wee bit pished.
