when they first came out, i decribed Ja Rule as sounding like DMX but, y'know, good. this when DMX was up on rape charges and Ja seemed like a more grown up and listenable artist.

i may have to flip that one of these days.

i love 'Party Up' but i cant stand the bit on 'Who We Be' where he just sounds like a battered saxophone ('da-da, da-da, da-da!')

stevem (blueski), Wednesday, 13 November 2002 22:43 (twenty-one years ago) link

I love the line in "What's My Name" where, in the midst of a lot of braggadocio, he yells in that growly voice, "I'm NOT! a NICE! PERSON!" It always makes me chuckle.

haha, me too. "DON'T YOU KNOW I DON'T HAVE ANY FRIENDS?" :( Poor DMX, maybe he really is a puppydog after all!

This thread has piqued my interest, though. I think I softened up to the man after "Party Up". That song is undeniable.

i'm glad nate didn't bring the hate. i admitted to liking el-p today! maybe this thread is the balance of the force.

anyway, here we go, track by track...

jess (dubplatestyle), Wednesday, 13 November 2002 23:02 (twenty-one years ago) link

"sometimes" is the intro. but unlike kool keith on black elvis he doesn't feel the need to hammer this home for us. (can i be the only person to notice how much bubba sparxxx sounds like a less nasal kool keith when he tries to cram too many words into a bar?) instead it's open mic night at city lights! "sometimes i wonder what life's about! sometimes i wonder why i scream and shout!" damn. but don't dwell too much because "sometimes it rains too much to care!" MOLOCH! MOLOOOCH!! NIGHTMARE OF MOLOCH! oh no! gun shot sound effects!! OH NO!!

jess (dubplatestyle), Wednesday, 13 November 2002 23:06 (twenty-one years ago) link

"school street": this whole song is just X spitting the names of the people he used to know!! he sure did know a lot of people named "black (something)". i like it because he's not really saying anything other than reading through his yearbook, but he delivers it like cookie monster on uppers.

jess (dubplatestyle), Wednesday, 13 November 2002 23:09 (twenty-one years ago) link

"who we be" is the single. everyone knows this one, i guess. the work the game the jerk the fame the fishtick the lame home of the brave little orphan annie bo bannie banana fanna fo fannie. etc. i like blueski's "broken saxophone" analogy above. certainly sounds better than borbetomagus or arthyr doyle*!!

jess (dubplatestyle), Wednesday, 13 November 2002 23:10 (twenty-one years ago) link

(*i have never heard a borbetomagus or arthur doyle record. also, i'm a little upset they left the "i am dmx" kids off the record itself.)

jess (dubplatestyle), Wednesday, 13 November 2002 23:11 (twenty-one years ago) link

"trina moe" i already talked about above.

jess (dubplatestyle), Wednesday, 13 November 2002 23:11 (twenty-one years ago) link

"we right here" doesn't do anything for me. simon reynolds called it "just the right side of insane." cool, whatever.

jess (dubplatestyle), Wednesday, 13 November 2002 23:14 (twenty-one years ago) link

"bloodline anthem": now we're talking! it sounds like thin lizzy! the guitar riff (yeah, a full on metal riff, not played through a korg or sampled [well, probably sampled] or anything] is lifted directly from some 70s or 80s monster jam, but damned if i know what it is. (alex in nyc to thread!) every time i hear it and the shrieking female chorus comes in, i think "kenickie", although i don't know why becuz i've never heard kenickie either!! this would have torn up pizzatime in '72! a deep dicking to rockist values!!

jess (dubplatestyle), Wednesday, 13 November 2002 23:18 (twenty-one years ago) link

(also contains the great opening couplet: "i like my blunts heavily hashed/bitches heavily assed"!)

jess (dubplatestyle), Wednesday, 13 November 2002 23:19 (twenty-one years ago) link

(also, in "we right here", he sez it's "the only joint gonna be banged til 2003." he's right!! i haven't listened to the blueprint in months.)

jess (dubplatestyle), Wednesday, 13 November 2002 23:19 (twenty-one years ago) link

"shorty was the bomb": oops! x got tire tracks on his back from some trick who poked holes in the condom with a safety pin or some other kinda trick-y shit in order to get herself knocked up with x's baby cuz she thinks he's gonna take care of her broke ass. wrong! (also, this must be a flashback saga, becuz in "bloodline" he sez "nigga like me/married to the same bitch." aww.) the best parts of this song are the little between-line asides in the chorus. ("yeah, shorty was alright." "she sucked a mean dick, i'll tell you what.") he sounds like he should be auditioning for a gig in the catskills!

jess (dubplatestyle), Wednesday, 13 November 2002 23:23 (twenty-one years ago) link

"damien III": DMX is recast by the ghost of charlie daniels (nb: possibly not dead, check on this; also, possibly did not write this song) in a new version of "the devil went down to georgia." my in laws went to see "the education of randy newman" in seattle this weekend. can you imagine how much better that big pile of snoozing crap would be with DMX in the title role?! (i have no idea how this is related, but whereas am i going to get to discuss this?) anyway, DMX meets the devil on a street corner. the devil, in this case, being DMX with a squeaky voice. (almost as good as missy's coversation with herself on the new album, with her voice dropped down an octive or two so she sounds like biggie!) DevilMX and DMX discuss his fate and then DMX runs away like a big pussy! (actually, i think he asks for jesus to come save him, which is kind of a gray area.)

"when i'm nothing" is one of those great disco grooves reverse pioneered by irv gotti that ruled 2000-2001. there's something so simultaneously endearing, ridiculous, and perfect about pituitary retards like X and ja rule spitting over swirly strings, chimes, and chic-bass where say, sylvester should be instead. of course there's the prerequisite female diva voice to take the slight edge off. how come no one has picked up on the weird transubstatiation that's taken place in the hyper-masculine world of hiphop when thugs can rap over Faggot Disco Shit with no one batting an eye? chuck d must be spinning in his financial grave!

jess (dubplatestyle), Wednesday, 13 November 2002 23:33 (twenty-one years ago) link

"she sucked a mean dick, i'll tell you what."

I'm imagining this said in a Hank Hill voice and I swear I am going to die lauging with tears down my face.

Nate Patrin (Nate Patrin), Wednesday, 13 November 2002 23:35 (twenty-one years ago) link

"i miss you" is the prerequisite post-"dear mama" familial lament. in this case it's grandma. you know the drill. X cries a bit, tells grandma how the rest of the family is doing (pretty good, by the sound of it), and faith evans creepily stands in for the role of the old lady by singing the "baby it's gonna be okay" chorus. faith, stop being pigeonholed as the siren of dead homiez before its too late!! its no wonder DMX is so fucked up when he talks about grandma whooping his ass and then hugging him. what kind of reinforcement is that?!

jess (dubplatestyle), Wednesday, 13 November 2002 23:38 (twenty-one years ago) link

mentasm stabs! it's 1999 all over again! call joey beltram's attorney!! he sure is pissed off in "number 11". (it's the 11th song, see? obviously someone didn't get his nap and his juice box in the studio that day.) he actually growls! like a puppy! hmmm. he talks about his back catalog again. god, he's worse than jay-z. at least this sounds like "holla holla" rather DJ Premier sampling that doors poetry CD my college girlfriend played until i wanted to scoop out my eyes with a spoon.

track 12 is a skit. a car pulls up outside a bodega. the isley brothers or something is playing. is this a tarantino movie? guns being cocked! oh no!! something bad is going down...

jess (dubplatestyle), Wednesday, 13 November 2002 23:42 (twenty-one years ago) link

"i'ma bang": christ this opening bass noise is sick! it sounds like swans! literally, not in some half-assed metaphorical "the sex-power-money grind of the thug lifestyle" way. "but it's gotta bang. IT HAS. TO. BANG." BLAM. and it does. for about the first thirty seconds. then he launches into another gift-of-gab-meets-the-guy from-burzum "i'm a righteous man" rant! someone needs to give him a dictionary with "cognitive dissonance" highlighted. (nb: this is the track that they're using for that banal-looking seagal movie where he breaks into alcatraz.) nice detuned guitar noizes before the choruses.

jess (dubplatestyle), Wednesday, 13 November 2002 23:47 (twenty-one years ago) link

"pull out": the car pulls away! what the hell happened?! you just know some shop keeper is lying over the honeydews with his brains splattered over the goya products, but damn, it would have been nice to have a litle closure! i blame MTV for my inability to process subtlty.

jess (dubplatestyle), Wednesday, 13 November 2002 23:49 (twenty-one years ago) link

"prayer IV": wanna guess what this is? DMX HURTS INSIDE! feel his pain. dmx is not used to love. he needs to go on an EST retreat or a male bonding camp. "give the nutrition to me, and i'll digest it." is this a carcass record?? this is all getting a bit esoteric for me. finger creeping to the skip button...must..resist...

"a minute for your son": of course they stick the best track at the end! who knew swizz didn't fall off? nice spongey electro-bings ala william orbit, ew wait no no. um, "pure shores"? sure. quavery extoica synth-voice riff which reminds me of nothing so much as "papua new guinea" or maybe 93/94 era ltj bukem if produced by 2 bad mice. erm, i'm getting a little music crit now, so i better wrap this up. it's good okay. download it, at least.

jess (dubplatestyle), Wednesday, 13 November 2002 23:55 (twenty-one years ago) link

man, this was exhausting. um, i'd like to give a shout out to the spizzzzzazzzzz crew for total inspiration, ilm for all the hugs and thugs, and of course jesus, mama, grandma, uncle ronnie, black rob, little kenny, cheeks, 2blak, chuckie nice-oh no!! bonus track!! OH NO!! really, oh no. who let these dogs out?! lyor what were you thinking okaying this?! arrrgh. anyway, i'm out! PEACE.

I never realized that "Party Up (Up In Here)" was by DMX. I only started hearing it on the radio relatively recently and due to the pleasantly excessive amount of crunk also being played I assumed it was by Bonecrusher (who I've never heard, I just thought this track sounded like how I assumed Bonecrusher would). I never thought I'd really like something by DMX but this song is fucking awesome. I just had to give it a shout-out.

for something that's about five years old it sounds pretty current.

Anthony Miccio (Anthony Miccio), Tuesday, 15 June 2004 21:13 (nineteen years ago) link

On the strength of his singles DMX is probably the greatest rap artist of the past five years. I have no desire to listen to any of his albums though, because I get the feeling they're full of songs that sound like that thing he did with Marilyn Manson. Still...

"You're wack, you're twisted, you girl's a ho
You're broke, the kid ain't yours, and e'body know
Your old man say you stupid, you be like "So?"
"I love ma baby momma, I never let her go"
I'm tired of weak-ass niggaz whinin' over puss that don't belong to them
Fuck is wrong with them?"

THAT is how you right a verse.

First Snoop and now...

Rapper DMX was arrested at London's Heathrow airport yesterday (May 13) for allegedly verbally abusing the cabin crew on a flight to England. According to police, DMX, born Earl Simmons, refused to button his seatbelt as the plane started its final descent. After the plane had landed, the 35-year-old rapper continued a verbal tired aimed at the flight's crew. The captain alerted police, who arrested DMX when the flight landed around 12:00 pm. "Heathrow Police were called at 12.05pm on Saturday to reports of a passenger causing a disturbance on an inbound aircraft," a Scotland Yard official said in a statement. "The plane landed at approximately 12.15pm and a 35-year-old man was arrested on suspicion of being verbally abusive to cabin crew." Police said they released the rapper with a caution.
