the shame element is a crucial part of the thread, but I think "I find this person unattractive for this list of aesthetic reasons" is probably more objectionable than "I find this person attractive for this list of aesthetic reasons".

I think enforcing a strict prohibition on saying women are attractive is unhealthy to be honest, even if it’s necessary. I understand why there is thus taboo—we are trying to avoid objectification, and reproducing the oppressive beauty expectations women live under, the sense that they are always under a gaze—and I think this is a noble motive. And maybe the only way to accomplish this is to put some conversation topics off limits. But doing so has its own consequences, driving these feelings underground, creating less candor between people of different genders and sexualities, more suspicion.

Map as always captured the weirdness of these contortions better than i could xps. Like there is a disingenuousness to all of this
― treeship., Friday, 6 August 2021 02:09 (two years ago) link
Expressing attraction is fine, and I even agree that the idea of finding someone morally repellent attractive is interesting, but dissecting and rating the appearance of a complete stranger across a dozen posts protected by anonymity, crosses a line for me.

I don't know who that woman is but I can't certainly see why people would find her attractive. I notice her surname is Dutch and she looks very Dutch.

oh that's a total smash then, lol! the commitment is strong :D
i'd say she actually was a bit less shameful a couple months ago. what's happening this week was pretty foreseeable - people have been warning each other about what a total fuckup she is for the last year, leading up to this - but i do think the shame meter ticks up juuuuust a bit when she does the actual thing everyone was warning each other about. it is at code red level, very top
