yes, the james pants lp is solid ... different but not too quirky, old school sounding yet fresh, plays with different genres yet flows really well ... a great record. his rhythm trax stuff is good too. it's basically him coming up with a follow-up to the original jive rhythm trax series.
The new electro-funk direction Stones Throw is taking is sounding good to my ears ... James Pants, Dam Funk, the Arabian Prince comp ... and hopefully more to come in that vein.

Still waiting for this to happen, I dunno what the holdup is - biggest amount of press I've seen so far was in the Graun and was by, er, Stevie

I kind of like Yesterdays New Quintet. It's the kind of thing I never, ever put on but when it comes up on shuffle I always prick up my ears.

the song "get your money right" by strong arm steady was a recent st podcast and is a really wonderful song. there was a dam-funk gospel funk podcast back in july, that was hot too.

I ordered it last week. The DR Hooker, Top Drawer and Baby Grandmothers songs are ace, I bet the rest is even better.

listening to the damfunk album now...very weird, it's got a lot of bleedthrough with 80s cassette fetishist types like James Ferraro imo but the sounds are clear not muddied - kinda love it, it seems really dense/rich in some way

what is "minimal wave"?

i guess i meant more minimal synth. it's like minimal, obscure new wave. lots belgian acts. i guess Minimal Wave is a label putting out new and reissues of this kinda stuff.
this was released on minimal wave. so dope

the new james pants is great. sounds like a mixture of ariel pink and john maus. also, he is channeling some strange religious vibe, i can tell he has been listening to a lot of the christian psych stuff ( dr hooker, azitis) and somehow mixing that with his usual electro/soul/post punk tendencies. its fucked up in a good way...i think the people who expect more of the last record the quirky hip/hop/party/electro stuff will def hate it... he's gone somewhere else with this one.
