hell yeah! the two ilxors who haven't removed their bookmarks from this thread won their leagues!― ✖, Sunday, October 3, 2021 7:47 PM (yesterday) bookmarkflaglink
oh i have not removed my bookmark, my other glorping league has just been such a boring bummer it hasn't been worth mentioning. but i'll give my season recap!
we have pitching staffs in this league instead of individual pitchers, which works well enough -- the team's collective pitching result scores them 0-27 points a day (technically like 30+ is possible but that's like a 15k perfect game). players score for all of the regular stuff, no minuses for strikeouts. also worth mentioning -- we have a "minors" system, where you can get not-yet-mlb-players during a second draft around the irl mlb draft, slot them in one of your six minor slots, and once you call them up, you "start a timer" on them. see, our keepers cost whatever round they're "ranked" at per fantasypros, but there are a bunch of ways to get discounts, the main one being your minors callups, who are at a 5/3/3 round discount in their first second and third years. we have 4 keepers (5 next year), so it's definitely worth getting minors guys in the pipeline. we had a guy with trea, acuna, and a couple of others all in rounds like 4-6 for years.
went into the season looking at a bit of a rebuilding year -- have a strong core of keepers -- devers, eloy, mountcastle on 3, 5, 5 rd discounts, olson at sticker price minus one, and a bunch of minors players ready to get called up -- lux, wander, rodgers. started the season EXTREMELY strong due to a bunch of my picks firing on all cylinders -- my first round pick of the padres pitching looked fantastic, jd martinez was raking, mondesi was raking when he played, chris taylor inexplicably solid -- so my gameplan was kind of out the window. i was in first place by the ASB despite having a middling overall score (5th or 6th out of 10, but my matchups had just been exceedingly lucky). my plan to sell at the deadline now made no sense, but buying in didn't feel right either, so i just kinda coasted. of course, when the sticky scandal ended in the sticky ban, the padres turned into dogshit and i started losing. failed my way into the playoffs, got beat in the first round, and our finals were... well, actually i need to go backwards again for a second.
so one of our managers quit midseason. he was in the league 5 years, but wasn't really enjoying it the past year or so, and this year after going like 10-2 in the first six weeks and 2-10 in the next six, quit. we had an "interim" guy step to the plate just to make sure the team was starting healthy players etc, although he wasn'tsure if he wanted to be a permanent manager going forward. the reason i bring this up is because the finals were that guy, and the commish who has won 3 of the past 10 years (he's no cheater like ✖'s commish, although he is definitely an absolute trade beast who knows when people are weak enough to make a bad trade). def not the finals i wanted to see! (obv i wanted to see me, or if not me, there are two other teams who had dominant seasons and have never won a pennant -- they both fell in the semis). the new guy won!
what gets funnier is that the old manager was like "oh cool, so we'll split the winnings?" and the commish was like "wtf you quit" and the new manager was like "uhh yeah ok i guess" and the commish was like "don't be soft!! you don't owe him anything!!" and it was a very minor scandal i guess. new manager ended up giving old manager back his buy-in at a charity event, and gave his entire winnings to the charity. no word on whether or not the old manager also donated his entry fee, i hope he did.
that's the whole story! i don't have advantageous draft picks next season yet, but i do have an overwhelming number of discount keepers that i might flip some of -- rodgers -5, wander -5, lux -5, devers -3, eloy -3, mountcastle -3, hiura -3, jp crawford -3... and adell, madrigal, marcelo mayer, elijah green and andruw jones jr (!) in the minors ready to call up when i have the room. almost certainly this coming season i will have to pull the trigger and really go for it, and the pipeline means my window is probably a few years.
