ILG Players Club Resurrection?

I would be very up for Chrono Trigger as I've never played it but was planning on beginning it very soon, but maybe that suffers from the same problem as Fallout, namely too long.

What systems do we all have?

This is why I liked the idea of playing indie games, because most of them have far lower system requirements. Unfortunately a lot of them do suck and get tedious in less time than it takes to install them. I dug Karoshi for a while but it got to the point where I thought "oh balls this is boring and repetitive".

(xpost) also, I agree, we need games that we can all reasonably complete in a three/four week period without being tied to the console/computer for hours every day.

i dunno, that feels a bit too over-obvious. like doing 'great expectations'. or no more like 'rebecca'.

as much as anything, we just need to pick something I think.

xp And I'm still early on in the basic HL2; finally blew up the chopper which was very satisfying.

I'm gonna play Chrono Trigger with completely no idea of wtf it is or is about, just that it's an rpg, one way or the other. It would be cool to play it in the players' club but I get that it's obvious and maybe something better can be found given the backgrounds of everyone potentially involved.

While I'm being selfish I'll also propose Suikoden DS b/c I want to play it and I have it already.

I think a ILGPC resurrection would be great!

RPGs: The problem with playing Fallout together wasn't necessarily that it was an RPG, I think, but that it was an incredibly open-ended RPG. From almost the outset of the game, 4-5 hours in, it was possible that all of us were in totally different parts of the map working on different quests. And on top of that, Fallout is the kind of game where you can just goof off/level up/explore for dozens of hours before you even bother with the main quest. Some people (I was one, sorta) were pursuing that, while others were advancing the story fairly regularly. A slightly more linear RPG might be easier for us to play through, but there's still the problem of time commitment. Some of us won't have time to play for 10+ hours a week (I know I won't - my girlfriend would murder me), but then that means playing through a 40-50 hour RPG might take 10 weeks or so. That's just right for some people (ME) but would kill the fun for others who want to advance more quickly. I dunno.

Independent Games: I like the idea of doing this 5 years from now. Some indie games are starting to get pretty good, but what thomp said ("the effort required to install them felt totally disproportionate to the amount of game actually involved. like going to the bookshop for a twelve-sentence novel") describes the feeling I get too.

Maybe some sort of action game like HL2 or Deus Ex might be good?

Can we set up a chrono trigger thread and a HL2 thread?
i think it's only worth it if we can get three or more people to play at the same time (along with a cadre of non-spoiling "played-it" kibbitzers). Count me in as one; if we can get at least two more playing at the same time, we should get going.

this is the plot of half-life 2, obviously. chrono trigger is about one an aged gunslinger who retires to become a watchmaker, and the past he just can't escape from.

i'd be up for this, as long as i can afford it i can always make time. can't play any PC games though.

ooh see i like the idea of Deus Ex, i only ever played the second one, but i don't think it's freely available no?

i dont have any next-gen systems, just ps2 xbox etc. can do most pc games, have snes and a copy of chrono trigger lmbo.

that doesnt sound bad to me! i mean, i have a pristine copy of rebecca that has remained unread since 9th grade, i could see getting into a book club or something with the idea being to delve into THA CLASSIX that u've never found time for, just like i've been doing with eg fallout x-com etc

I'll let someone else make the decision to start a Chrono Trigger thread for this but if it's started I'll start playing (and posting) tomorrow.

i could prob roll with the HL2 thing - i started and then abandoned it a while ago, and ive been meaning to get back to it.

i have no chrono trigger capable system, so i am out on that (unless theres something im not thinking of (mac?) that has some emulator or something.)

One thing that would be cool with Deus Ex (I think - I've never played it!) is that it's divided into levels, so there would be easy starting and stopping points, and since apparently you can beat each level in a number of ways, depending on what technology tree branch you're following, it would be kind of neat to compare how we went about each level.

There are emulators for Chrono Trigger.

the problem with deus ex (other than it being hella gay obv) is that the ways of beating each level are 'the way that involves shooting a bunch of people in the face' and 'the one other way'

guys i would quite like to suggest JAGGED ALLIANCE or possibly JAGGED ALLIANCE 2 - they're both on goodoldgames, non-linear tactics game with an x-com/fallout type battle system and rpg elements. i haven't played them and have wanted to for ages

otoh i think we should stick with chrono trigger for now and maybe hold a vote for next one? i do want to play psychonauts tho

Chrono Trigger I remember being 40-50 hours on first playthrough. More, of course if you start seeking out all the extra stuff and various endings. It just blows by, though - once you guys get into it you'll be tearing it up.

Half-Life 2 was... 20 hours maybe? Maybe even shorter, there were several points where I got confused and stuck, especially in the driving and boating sections. (lol let's do Team Fortress 2!)

Jagged Alliance games are great - I'd recommend skipping straight to JA2 since the first one really is pretty ugly now. Then again, I feel like they're gonna have similar problems as with Fallout, very non-linear, and it's far longer and more difficult to boot. But yeah, it is totally awesome, highly recommended if you like X-Com/tactics games.

Two nominations:

Star Control 2 (aka The Ur-quan Masters) free and open-source, playable on pretty much any PC today, a classic mixture of arcade shooter/adventure game/RPG space opera. Very open-ended, though - and I don't even remember how long one playthrough will take. Fantastic game, one of those games that refuses to stick to one genre and succeeds wonderfully, and a great sense of humor throughout.

Killer7. I know this has a ton of marks against it - a) GameCube, PS2 or Wii only b) frustrating control system and gameplay and c) completely obtuse plot conveyed deceptively with an immature tone - but it's a truly unique experience, very thought provoking and ripe for discussion. Also it's very conveniently structured into chapters.

I also own but haven't played Psychonauts. Seems to be a pattern here, and maybe there's a reason for that? I know I started it once, and found the opening cutscenes long and unfunny and unskippable, and then the first level a bit meh, and then it got put on the shelf and hasn't been picked up again, yet.

Ha... I bought Psychonauts on PC a year before I even had one that could run it! I'm guessing you guys also ran into the game for really cheap, since it was hitting a lot of bargain bins and such due to the poor sales despite critical acclaim curse.
