well, the political content of IAC(Y) exceeds the frolicking by about 10:1, so don't be crushed.

Having just gotten through Barbara Kopple's magnum opus Havoc, I'm eagerly anticipating that documentary trifle Harlan County, USA.

I should start e-mailing them about getting the rights to Double Indemnity and Open City. Neither of the skeevy bootlegs I bought of those two worked worth a damn.

The Passion of Joan of Arc. I watched it twice in a row. I can't get the images out of my head. Warning: silent film, almost all close-ups, like moving portraiture with a narrative. The set is rly cool.

tmg: i am cuba is fucking astonishing; some of the best filmmaking I've ever seen, exacerbated by the difficulty that there is NO PLOT; it's just straight propaganda.

Le Cercle Rouge
F For Fake
Confidential Report/Mr. Arkadin megabox
All their Ozu DVD's are awesome.

Hope L'Armee Des Ombres happens this year.

jay vee have you seen Army of Shadows at film forum yet? It's a must.

Dan Selzer (Dan Selzer), Friday, 5 May 2006 20:04 (eighteen years ago) link

Forksclove - Yup, I agree, I've seen I Am Cuba a handful of times, it's amazing each time. See Siberian Mammoth if you haven't. There are a lot of interesting anecdotes, esp concerning how the film was completely buried and shelved at the time. Also Russian filmmakers in Cuba catching glimpse of decadent American influence (sex, wealth) on its way out is pretty amusing.

TRG (TRG), Friday, 5 May 2006 20:14 (eighteen years ago) link

re I Am Cuba...the Cranes are Flying is pretty amazing too, there's more narrative with the propaganda and equally beautiful.

Dan Selzer (Dan Selzer), Friday, 5 May 2006 20:42 (eighteen years ago) link

Did "Beyond the Valley of the Dolls" ever happen? I still haven't seen it yet. Also, did that remake die in production? I sure fucking hope so. What acting-type women are even up to Russ Meyer's standards these days? Ebert doesn't think there are any.

I'm really curious about the Criterion "Carnival of Souls," a fave, but it's hard to justify spending $35+ on it when I bought my current copy for $3.

Abbott (Abbott), Friday, 5 May 2006 20:54 (eighteen years ago) link

I have a dvd player/tv combo in my house that has this weird copy protection light-to-dark flicker on the screen that renders the movie unwatchable, even if it's the original and Criterion discs ALWAYS set it off.

My DVD player did this when I hooked it to my VCR, with the VCR connected to the TV because my TV at the time had no modern inputs. Is there a VCR in the loop in your setup? Or is there some sort of setup menu that maybe you've set wrong (or not set at all)?

nickn (nickn), Friday, 5 May 2006 20:58 (eighteen years ago) link

Also, I found the Metropolitan DVD at Fry's for $25, if people are put off by the normal $39.95 normal price. The Passenger was $20 there, but it's not a Criterion release.

nickn (nickn), Friday, 5 May 2006 21:00 (eighteen years ago) link

Beyond the Valley of the Dolls got cancelled because of some dealings with the Meyer estate, I think. It's now going to come out as a Fox product (read: cheaper) later on.

milo z (mlp), Friday, 5 May 2006 21:02 (eighteen years ago) link

The Cranes Are Flying seconded...

I wouldn't say it has much propaganda in it though (as a matter of fact it was received quite coldly in soviet mass media at the time - which was pro-government of course).

Yeah, I did. Bad experience. I can't stand the hacking/wheezing/chattering crowds at FF. But I've had DVD boots of it for a couple years now. It's possibly my favorite Melville.

I would love to see this with commentary (or -ies, given the situation) by all the involved parties. It's a more important counterculture moment than most people give it credit for:

I'm now going through the supplements on Harlan County USA, after watching the feature. Oh man. This is the real deal. In the new interview featurette, Kopple describes how her camera crew was attacked by belligerent picket line busters and how she had to fight someone off by swinging her microphone at him. Egads! There are so many short, impromptu, incredibly moving speeches in it, many from the wives of miners. I mean, I can't remember the last time I heard a decent speech, and this film has a ton of them. Wow...just, wow.

i'd like to see them branch out into more "experimental" things a la the brakhage set. does un chant d'amour have a dvd release yet?

They have a Myspace page:

http://www.criterionco.com/nl206/news_2-06.html

(links to Amazon 45% off sale too -- Arkadin, Young Mr Lincoln, M, Short Cuts plus...)

Like Richard Linklater, I recommend Powell & Pressburger's I Know Where I'm Going!

It looks like Un chant d'amour has only been released in the UK by BFI. (joseph, it's playing at MoMA on a bill with the Beckett-Keaton Film on Friday night & Sat.)

Dr Morbius (Dr Morbius), Wednesday, 10 May 2006 18:52 (eighteen years ago) link

ten months pass...
June's release schedule is (lame-looking Claude Berri father-son shit aside) the most attractive line-up they've come up with since, well, May (if you're not an all-region-DVD-player-pwner). Well, maybe not, since their Chris Marker double feature doesn't look to be adding much new to the European set I've had for years.

But still, two Makavejev artsploitations and If... ain't bad.

I'm worried rewatching it now will knock If... down a few pegs, but damned if it wasn't about my favorite film ever when I first saw it as a 13- or 14-year-old.

Edward III, Friday, 16 March 2007 18:19 (seventeen years ago) link

Oh wait. That's Michel Simon in that Berri thing. I might have to still give it a chance.

Eric H., Friday, 16 March 2007 18:21 (seventeen years ago) link

It's weird looking back on this thread now and seeing some of the Criterions that were supposedly forthcoming that didn't pan out. I hope they're still working on those Bunuel titles.

I never did a POX Criterion titles. With today's announcement, I guess I should: Sans soleil, La Jetée, 3 Women, All That Heaven Allows, Gertrud, Ugetsu, Cleo from 5 to 7, The Art of Seeing with One's Own Eyes, L'avvenura and Grey Gardens. Oh, and Balthazar. Oh, and The Naked Kiss and Ivan the Terrible. Damn, the collection's getting big.
