gonna be a long hot summer for the MS Word paperclip (the table is the table), Thursday, 23 July 2009 17:04 (fourteen years ago) link

"Let's Take Off" is a tremendous mix starter. And can we talk about the swagger-inducing "Hood Pass Intact"? That one most definitely makes you want to walk with a mean limp.

myndbloom, Thursday, 23 July 2009 17:15 (fourteen years ago) link

you think so? i think Dam-Funk's name is a weak point for sure, when i try to tell people about him they always give the "Dame Funk?!?!?!"....

pipecock, Thursday, 23 July 2009 17:16 (fourteen years ago) link

all these guys have bad names.

titchy (titchyschneiderMk2), Thursday, 23 July 2009 17:19 (fourteen years ago) link

having funk in your name = generally bad idea for modern artists

titchy (titchyschneiderMk2), Thursday, 23 July 2009 17:20 (fourteen years ago) link

you're right. Amp Fiddler is better.
when you're making music that sounds like it's from 1982, I think it's appropriate.

hope this helps (Granny Dainger), Thursday, 23 July 2009 17:41 (fourteen years ago) link

it looks cooler than it sounds, i'll give you that.

hope this helps (Granny Dainger), Thursday, 23 July 2009 17:41 (fourteen years ago) link

i always hoped for more masturbatory puns from amp fiddler.

titchy (titchyschneiderMk2), Thursday, 23 July 2009 17:46 (fourteen years ago) link

i'm with pipecock on this...Amp Fiddler is light years ahead of that DF is doing...and while i really like it, i have yet to be anywhere near as blown away as I have been with Amp's material. and let's not even talk about live...

mikebee (BATTAGS), Thursday, 23 July 2009 21:27 (fourteen years ago) link

that = what

mikebee (BATTAGS), Thursday, 23 July 2009 21:28 (fourteen years ago) link

i want to know more about how dam funk produces his stuff... he said in an interview somewhere that it was without the use of sequencers. how's that possible? unless he means, like, sequencing programs like logic or ableton, the synth arpeggios and drum patterns must be sequenced... no?

pshrbrn, Friday, 24 July 2009 07:11 (fourteen years ago) link

theres no way he doesnt use sequencers. the stuff i heard sounded like some old p funk sessioner playing over madlib beats. maybe he meant for the synths or something.

titchy (titchyschneiderMk2), Friday, 24 July 2009 10:01 (fourteen years ago) link

Perhaps what he means is that he programmes the drum machine to play the beats (true, that is a sequencer of sorts, but an external sequencer is what most people think of by the term 'sequencer'). He then plays in free time over the top, recording successive passes to multitrack tape (or maybe a digital recorder acting as a multitrack). That would be exactly what most people did in the early '80s.

dubmill, Friday, 24 July 2009 10:49 (fourteen years ago) link

My guess is that he uses old hardware and plays the keys by hand into whatever he uses to record.

A lot of older synths use a +5volt trigger to step their arpeggiator. This allows you to play arps by hand and still have the arpeggiator locked to the drum machine. He is definitely using a drum machine, you can't get that stiff jitter that his drums have by hand.

Washing Machine by Mr. Fingers is a classic example of this. Its a Juno 60 being played by hand and the arp is being fired by a 707 trig out.

your original display name is still visible (Display Name), Friday, 24 July 2009 10:50 (fourteen years ago) link

what i do is just play something once into Logic, then select that little bit and keep copying and pasting it as many times as i want, pretty easy and way easier than messing around with old weird apreggiators and shit, i can't never figure out old keyboard at all.

tulsa anti-juggalo league (M@tt He1ges0n), Friday, 24 July 2009 16:10 (fourteen years ago) link

apparently there's this program called ableton that does that all for you now. you don't even have to play anything, just click "make beat" and voila.

damo tsu tsuki (r1o natsume), Friday, 24 July 2009 16:45 (fourteen years ago) link

that sounds pretty cool.

i don't know much besides logic cuz that's what i've messed around with

this EP bangs yall

meme-first attitude (J0rdan S.), Tuesday, 28 July 2009 22:52 (fourteen years ago) link

there are some songs that i wish sounded more like whiney g-funk and less like complex chromeo beats, but hey i love chromeo all the same so it's no biggie

meme-first attitude (J0rdan S.), Tuesday, 28 July 2009 22:53 (fourteen years ago) link

i have not yet gotten to the 9 min song called "searchin' 4 funk's future" just yet - i'm excited about that

meme-first attitude (J0rdan S.), Tuesday, 28 July 2009 22:53 (fourteen years ago) link

dam-funk and chromeo both trying to sound like the gap band or whatever (and going about it in entirely different ways) /= dam-funk sounding like chromeo

Fly is Vol. 2 of the 'digital release' from my new project Toeachizown. The 1st 3 joints on this volume consist of my continued steps into the 'electric-space-funk' style I'm humbled 2 share with U from my mind, yet this time out, with a more 'danceable' vibe 2 it. U know, for the clubs...worldwide! The first 3 tracks “Flying V Ride” (which is a reference 2 the fabled UFO that many have reported seeing in their lifetime), “Candy Dancin’” & “Burn Straight Thru U” co-exist as a 'suite' called “The Move Suite”. Yes, 3 songs that are joined together as 1. This is why the 'drum machine pattern' is the same on these 3 particular songs. “Candy Dancin’” also features a wicked synth solo & vocoder contribution by the 1 and only Mark de Clive-Lowe.

The remaining 3 joints of this volume on this 'digital release': “10 West”, “I Wanna Know” (a vocal) & “Rollin’” represent exactly what the title of this volume is: Fly. They're joints that U can roll 2. Let your hair down 2. Vibe with a lady 2 (or vice-versa), + stay 'fly' 2. I know there's still some fly ladies & gentlemen out there. This Vol. 2 from my Toeachizown project is...4 U.

imo if you aren't playing the hell out of dam-funk your summer sucks balls and you should be deported to the north pole

it's kind of amazing to me how great his long form stuff is. the suite here and "searching 4 funk's future" have a great build and aren't really content with just settling into a groove and riding it out

seeing him live tonight

i'm just worried this will be a repeat of my experience seeing d4rshan jesr4ni of metro area, in which i expected to hear a bunch of metro area-ish tracks and instead was treated to a two hour set of boring (to me) unclassics revivalism. which also led to a really butthurt personal email from d4rshan after i posted about it on ILM.

i would much much rather hear dam funk spin his own music than spin a two hour set of gap band and prince tracks, so i'm hoping that's what happens. i assume he's not playing live or anything.

moonship journey to baja, Thursday, 6 August 2009 21:12 (fourteen years ago) link

he does great boogie mixes tho ... i mean, hes a party DJ, thats what hes known for, so he might be BETTER at unclassics revivalism ...

butthurt (deej), Thursday, 6 August 2009 22:06 (fourteen years ago) link

he cleared the floor by playing lots of g-funk and lots of instrumental early 80s tracks with super-loud bass. didn't really sound anything like his mixes. he did sing along to nearly every track though, making up really silly lyrics

moonship journey to baja, Friday, 7 August 2009 20:14 (fourteen years ago) link

at this point i'm pretty used to having my expectations busted by DJ sets from producers i like

i've only heard the benji b mix but it was good, that said I think I'd like if someone played all old gfunk. or made music like it. nobody is doing this really even tho there's a big crossover between 80s boogie and gfunk imo...cocaine crossover.

i think hes an amazing musician but some of his programming is kinda zzzz. its kinda like 90s smooth jazz with someone soloing all over jazz+hip hop beats except hes just doing it with old 80s quiet stormy drum machines.
