"So, Peter, when did you lose your virginity?"

*awkward silence*

tbh all of these sex poll threads are retarded but luckily there are multiple boards on ilx where you can be retarded in one capacity or another. i was going to say i can't believe people are actually discussing whether tmi topics belong on the tmi board, but fuck i'll believe anything these days when it comes to some posters being dense.

call all destroyer, Friday, 24 July 2009 12:41 (fourteen years ago) link

Sorry if I missed something, but at what point did simply asking the AGE at which people lost their virginity become "TMI"?

It wasn't a request for details or anything graphic, it was simply asking the age. A reasonable stastic.

ILX is starting to resemble this kind of Mary Whitehouse hell of a 4th grade catholic school classroom where simply mentioning sex in any way results in your being told to go and stand in the corner.

Yes, I do find that really weird.

Now would be the best time for a disgusting graphic jpeg if anybody fancies taking a temp ban for the team.

Personally, I don't much care for sports, but I still don't think all sports thread should be banished to a special "I Love Sports" board.

mods please create I Love Sports board and move this thread there

The Missionary Position and An empty cigar tube filled with wasps makes a good vibrator. are two of the funniest threads in ILE history. I don't want to post to an ILE without gross-out sex threads.

Desmond Decca Aitkenhead (Matt DC), Friday, 24 July 2009 14:25 (fourteen years ago) link

those threads would have been just as funny and just as memorable if they'd been on TMI vs ILE, though

It does seem really weird that the new crop of moderators seems to think that "I love everything" = "I love everything EXCEPT topics of a sexual nature".

I very much doubt it - most sub-boards, including ILTMI, have a fraction of the number of readers and participants of ILE.

Yeah, even if many people use Site New Answers, I'm not sure how many include ILTMI among the subboards that appear on the new answers page.

Guys guys I made it totally explicit, right after I did it, on the thread! Post in question:

Moved to ilTIM bcz of harbl & PP's comments and bcz 'sexually themed threads devolving into psychosexual meltdowns & character assaults' has been a thing lately (unfortunately); if this is a dumb overreaction I can move the classy talk of this exciting thredd back to ILE.

I said why, I offered to move it if it bugged people, what more do you want? Is this a purloined letter – you can't find the answer bcz it's in the most obvious place?

It made sense to me that it IF people thought it was an undue executive decision, that they'd reply to that post and be like 'uh Abbott geez put it back where it was you sillypants.' Or that's what I was thinking. Did not know until other mods pointed it out that this thread (this very one here) existed.

Sorry if I rankled anyone.

bad-boy cartographer (Abbott), Friday, 24 July 2009 19:07 (fourteen years ago) link

i wasn't really bothered by the thread being on ILE other than being sort of annoyed at people starting 10,000 non-interesting polls about sex, but i don't have to read them, i know. on the other hand i think you made the right decision. shows up in my SNA anyway.

blobfish russian (harbl), Friday, 24 July 2009 19:21 (fourteen years ago) link

tbh i just wanted to see what would happen if another sex thread got moved to TMI. psychosexual meltdowns and character assaults are great fun

blobfish russian (harbl), Friday, 24 July 2009 19:24 (fourteen years ago) link

Abbott, I read your explanation and it's perfectly fine, but since several other sex-related threads were moved from ILE to ILTMI within the last few days, it seemed like there's a new mod policy going on, and that's what we're discussing here. No way am I accusing you or any other specific mod, just asking if there indeed is a new policy, and whether such a policy would make in sense. But based on Dan's comment upthread there doesn't seem to be any policy and sex threads can still be posted to ILE, or am I wrong?

Tuomas, Friday, 24 July 2009 19:33 (fourteen years ago) link

oh you're wrong

tuomas it's not like we're prudes and don't want to read threads about how many times people have tasted their own masturbation, it's just that we don't want to read them on ILE, or anywhere else. thanks.

Mr. Que, Friday, 24 July 2009 19:35 (fourteen years ago) link

i mean who cares where you post your threads about sex and liquids, just post them on i love tmi, that's why you have that ENTIRE board, right?

Mr. Que, Friday, 24 July 2009 19:36 (fourteen years ago) link

could it be it's not the sexual content per se but that the threads/questions are just kind of......TMI. like stuff that's not particularly substantive. xp.

blobfish russian (harbl), Friday, 24 July 2009 19:37 (fourteen years ago) link

xp but then ppl won't get to exercise a weird sense of entitlement where they want their stupid threads to be seen by the maximum possible number of posters!

call all destroyer, Friday, 24 July 2009 19:37 (fourteen years ago) link

the only people who won't see it are people who purposely take TMI out of site new answers, who probably wouldn't vote in the poll to begin with, even if it was on ILE. consider that.

blobfish russian (harbl), Friday, 24 July 2009 19:39 (fourteen years ago) link

This is much ado about nothing.

There is no specific policy regarding sex threads and where they "belong". Everyone's threshold for TMI is different so there will always be argument about whether a thread should have been started there or or not if it is the least bit personal/controversial. I think Abbott's reasoning is rational; it doesn't mark a new moderation policy or a new trend in moderator action.

If people are okay with it, I'd like to lock this thread now; it seems to be moving rapidly towards circular repetition of the same points counterpointed with sniping and I would like to not have that.

Lisa Simpson = a fictional bitch (HI DERE), Friday, 24 July 2009 19:41 (fourteen years ago) link

(okay so maybe I'm too late on the sniping front)

Lisa Simpson = a fictional bitch (HI DERE), Friday, 24 July 2009 19:41 (fourteen years ago) link

Or, since the moved threads were polls, maybe they were just interested in getting a more general result and more general opinions? People who read ILTMI are a smaller and probably kinda skewed group, so to it would make perfect sense to post a poll to ILE if you want a less skewed result.

(xxx-post)

Yeah, go ahead and lock the thread, doesn't look like there's anything new to add.

Tuomas, Friday, 24 July 2009 19:44 (fourteen years ago) link

I'm a little uneasy with the fact that a lot of arguments against this (or other) sex-related threads being on ILE seem to be a long the lines of "we don't want any more boring sex-related polls". Surely this is beside the point, and I don't see the logic behind supporting to move a thread from ILE to ILTMI because it's boring. Also "boring" to whom (I obviously don't think it's boring since I started it).

touch my bum / this is life (daavid), Friday, 24 July 2009 19:45 (fourteen years ago) link

I think the main issue here is the fact the the thread starter didn't ask for the thread to be moved. I think there's mitigating circumstances in the fact that the poll was moved after the results came in, so it wasn't as if the audience was limited during the voting period.

In general, we avoid moving threads unless the creator asks for them to be moved. There are times when mods will use their discretion to move a thread to a board where it makes more "sense"; this isn't a frequent occurrence and shouldn't be expected every time a thread pops up in an unexpected location, but it may happen from time to time. The timing around this, right after a series of contentious poster/moderator interactions over threads of a similar nature, is what is causing consternation here. We don't intend to nanny every thread onto an appropriate sub-board.

I'm not going to lock the thread since people are still talking but from a mod standpoint I think we're set with this issue.

Lisa Simpson = a fictional bitch (HI DERE), Friday, 24 July 2009 19:52 (fourteen years ago) link

too much information

Mr. Que, Friday, 24 July 2009 19:52 (fourteen years ago) link

Yeah, but there's been probably something like 400 different threads on ILE new answers since Sunday, so the 4 threads (the "tasted yourself" thread was never on ILE) are maybe 1% of all threads.

(x-post to Destroyer)

Tuomas, Friday, 24 July 2009 19:54 (fourteen years ago) link

the idea that the 'thread starter' needs to ask for them to be moved is a bit moot in this situation, imo. it's more an issue of someone not realizing it should have gone on a different board and kind mods stepping in to show them the way.
