Richmonds isn't pink goo, it was originally made as an Irish style sausage, totally agree about Walls though

Can't be doing with a thin sausage.

Little Billy Love (Tom D.), Sunday, 7 January 2024 21:59 (four months ago) link

their meat-free ones are good too

emishi sun hack (Noodle Vague), Sunday, 7 January 2024 21:59 (four months ago) link

yeah much better than the Linda McCartney ones

vodkaitamin effrtvescent (calzino), Sunday, 7 January 2024 22:00 (four months ago) link

Sausages and mashed potatoes with some proper onion gravy with caramelised onions, red wine and beef fat, that is some pretty good tuck.

vodkaitamin effrtvescent (calzino), Sunday, 7 January 2024 22:10 (four months ago) link

Swap mash for a proper jacket potato and it's probably one of my favourite teas

kinder, Sunday, 7 January 2024 22:12 (four months ago) link

the meat-free Richmonds are great for having with gravy, mash and carrots. Quorn sausages work better as part of a breakfast. The Linda McCartney burgers are excellent but the Linda McCartney sausages are mediocre and also don't seem consistent in the way they cook despite the instructions being simple and unchanged. Thank you for coming to my TED Talk on meat substitutes in the UK

An American sausage patty is a beautiful thing but in the UK is only available in Sausage McMuffins. Otherwise we have chipolatas (which are known as LINKS in the US).

Napoli sausage from the good butcher across the street is what I choose when I’m treating myself, otherwise I pounce on Waitrose/Sainsburys posh ranges reduced to clear.

steely flan (suzy), Sunday, 7 January 2024 22:14 (four months ago) link

does Southern style gravy (US South) work with UK food? I always hear they have it with biscuits and start thinking that's not reet!

vodkaitamin effrtvescent (calzino), Sunday, 7 January 2024 22:17 (four months ago) link

I was watching a youtube chef cutting the skin of some spicy Napoli sausage for a Bolognese recipe and my mouth was watering while it's contents were sizzling in the pan.

vodkaitamin effrtvescent (calzino), Sunday, 7 January 2024 22:20 (four months ago) link

American sausage patty is basically lorne sausage, surely?

This is Dance Anthems, have some respect (Camaraderie at Arms Length), Sunday, 7 January 2024 22:24 (four months ago) link

Like a breakfast patty? I think the seasonings (particularly sage) are what I think of in the US.

Josh in Chicago, Sunday, 7 January 2024 22:30 (four months ago) link

white peppery gravy works on a lot of stuff, like pork or that tremendous american invention that i can’t believe scotland hasn’t adopted, the chicken-fried steak. the biscuits in question are large fluffy savoury baked goods

Humanitarian Pause (Tracer Hand), Sunday, 7 January 2024 22:30 (four months ago) link

Josh i’m sorry that your sister married a twat (rhymes with “hat”)

Humanitarian Pause (Tracer Hand), Sunday, 7 January 2024 22:31 (four months ago) link

I keep wondering if he's better than I make him out to be, and he may be. He seems to be a good parent to my lil' nephews. But my limited time spent with him has seen more than its share of twattery. He may think the same of me. Probably. But everyone on this side of the ocean, from my mom on down, has had some issue with him, so I'm leaning toward it being a he-problem and not a me-problem.

Josh in Chicago, Sunday, 7 January 2024 22:36 (four months ago) link

one thing I've learned is the only way to make *proper* onion gravy is to caramelise the onions, which takes an hour. There aren't any short-cuts. I tried one once that involved baking powder and a pressure cooker - the result was so vile I feel physically sick just thinking about it.

vodkaitamin effrtvescent (calzino), Sunday, 7 January 2024 22:37 (four months ago) link

Lorne sausage contains all or part beef iirc? Also it is square.

Not the same as a sausage patty, which is a pork disc. The main spicing I notice on them is lots of ground pepper.

steely flan (suzy), Sunday, 7 January 2024 22:39 (four months ago) link

Calz, I made onion marmalade/seeni sambol and I must’ve stood over the pot for three hours. The results were glorious (imagine a great big hit of chilli and Sri Lankan spicing in what looks like Tracklements onion chutney).

steely flan (suzy), Sunday, 7 January 2024 22:42 (four months ago) link

that sounds amazing. Patience to unlock the flavour in onions pays off bigtime it seems!

(which are known as LINKS in the US).

Links are what (linked) sausages are called in Scotland.

Piles of raw meat have been left mysteriously abandoned around a town for months, leaving residents feeling "baffled and annoyed".

People in Stockport, Greater Manchester, have reported heaps of red meat and chicken dumped in the Reddish area, often on an almost weekly basis.

xyzzzz__, Monday, 8 January 2024 16:57 (four months ago) link

This used to happen regularly in a small park I would walk my dog, in Bow. Like every fortnight there would be another sack of beef, or a couple chickens or something. Could never figure out why.

a hoy hoy, Monday, 8 January 2024 17:30 (four months ago) link

christ, I'd be struggling to hold my dog back from eating some raw meat in the park. I'm not joking he'd literally eat the lot without some intervention, once he starts eating he goes into a dark food aggression mode and it's hard to stop him without risking a bite. Lol, I get xl bullied by a Lab.

New update. My kid showed her young cousins "Phineas and Ferb," and while they loved it, my bro in law dismissed it as an annoying American show and turned it off. Ha ha, what a dick, who doesn't like "Phineas and Ferb"?

the cousins are only allowed to watch Chorlton and the Wheelies

(aren't they meant to be more recycleable? i think all ours ended up in the same bin as always. who recycles 2" square bits of paper?)

I think the wrappers are biodegradable rather than recyclable

This is Dance Anthems, have some respect (Camaraderie at Arms Length), Thursday, 11 January 2024 15:22 (four months ago) link

https://www.qualitystreet.co.uk/sustainability

interesting bits:

"we are returning to our roots, introducing paper wrappers similar to those which appeared in the first selection in 1936!"

"Recycling works best when small pieces of packaging, like our Quality Street® wrappers, are bundled together:
i) Scrunch foil wraps into a fist sized ball with other foil.
ii) Scrunch new paper wrappers into a fist sized ball with other paper or put into a paper envelope."

turns out the previous cellulose wrappers (the outsides i guess) were compostable, the new paper ones are recycleable and the foil was always recycleable.

When I was growing up, no-one else would touch the blue ones, which was great because I'd eat them. Then the dregs of the tin would be the toffee sticks and pennies, which was great because I'd eat them. Although in days of yore when we were flush enough to have two tins over the holidays, there'd be an awkward day or two stand off because my father would refuse to open the second tin before the first one was empty.

I do wonder whether the quality of the chocolate has significantly decreased or if it's just that I've now spoiled my palate with non-shit chocolate and there's no going back.
